Well, since I'm a fan of Open Source, or GPL (General Public License) I use mostly free license applications. To this end, the best anti-virus I've run across and use exclusively on all 3 PCs at home, and suggest to friends is Avast. Avast is very comprehensive in what it protects, including memory, email, IM clients, P2P clients, and full-on nested and archived file scanning.
If you are looking for a premier Malware/Adware (malicious software) cleaner, check out superantispyware. They have an excellent free version that gets to the root of these nasty usurpers in no time flat.

I think norton is using more resources than AVG. It gonna slow down the whole system if activated all functions.

I agree. I was a bit worried because AVG was free but I think its worked so well on my computer and I'm actually very impressed y the programme. I did have a sample of Norton Anti-Virus which came with my laptop but it only worked for 90 days. I actually think that AVG works better than Norton Anti-Virus and I'd recommended it to anyone.

hi friend, iuse avast anti virus software in my computer. earlier i was used kaspersky. when it expired i changed it to avast.
herare some of features.
* Standard Shield — Real-time protection
* Anti-rootkit — Built-in protection
* Anti-spyware — Built-in protection
* IM shield — Instant Messenger protection
* P2P shield — P2P protection
* Internet Mail — E-mail protection
* Outlook/Exchange — Microsoft Outlook/Exchange protection
* Web Shield — HTTP protection (localtransparent proxy)
* Script blocker — script checker (Pro version only)
* Network Shield — basic protection against well-known network worms. Acts as a lightweight Intrusion Detection System
* Audible alarms — vocal warnings such as "Caution, a virus has been detected!"
* Boot-time scan — through the program interface, a user can schedule a boot-time scan to remove viruses that load during Windows startup and are therefore difficult to remove. A very important feature especially for viruses written to shut-down the virus protection as soon as Windows starts.
* Self-Protection — Prevents malware from terminating Avast! processes and damaging Avast! files.
* Skinnable — Program is skinnable GUI.

I've found that the free Avira Personal Edition Classic antivirus is really good. It's very comprehensive and thorough, updates every three days automatically, and has a great feature that warns you when they detect a new virus trying to enter your system, no matter what you're doing on the computer. In conjunction with Spybot Search and Destroy, a free anti-spyware program, I've kept my computer virus-free for nearly 3 years!

I have a laptop which is protected by bit defender. Its an old laptop which I have upgraded to run on Windows XP. So far the bit defender works very well but I have noted some programs have run slow but that may be due to other hardware configuration that i have.
I also use Norton 360 which protects my desktop also running Windows XP Pro. SO far this works well and allows convenient cleaning and defraq activity.

hi ovation. i am also using Grisoft's Free AVG Anti-Virus for years now. I never experience any problems with it. Although it's 8.0 version gave me a little. It restricts some of my programs from running. One of the applications I am talking about is Radmin, Remote Administration program. I don't know what happened and I don't want to sacrifice all other the computers in our system, so I let the other computers use the older version. Grisoft announced that version 7.5 will be replaced with 8.0 and they will no longer update the old version, by the end of the year. That is something to be planned...

I hatre AVG. AVG is the worst Computer security system to get. My recomendations, Norton, Mcaffe or CA Internet security. AVG kags your computer to your max and barely will keep your computer protected. Why do you think it's free? Lol.

I have used AVG off and on. Now they have a "suite" which also protects against adware and spyware. I have also tried Kaspersky's all in one which is good too. Not every program will catch everything so it is wise to use additional virus/spyware from time to time.
