My toilet is making funny noises!

For the past week our toilet has been acting funny. Everytime the toilet is flushed, a high pitched piercing sound comes out of the water tank in the back. It's made this sound before, but today the sound continued for three minutes. Then it stopped. I don't have the money to have a plumber check it out. So, I'm looking for do-it-yourself answers to this issue. Other than the high pitched screaming noise, it's working fine and we've had no other problems. No back ups, either. It's just the noise and I'm worried that it could be a sign that something big is about to go wrong. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Why is it making that sound? And what would be the solution? Would love some suggestions.

Interesting to hear about your piercing noise coming out of the toilet. We have had similar sounds before but not as long.. just a momentary burst of noise;) but it happened just for a few days.. we never heard it again.. mmm maybe it was a self alignment problem with air gaps and blockage in the system. One solution is probably to pour a pail or two of water into the toilet and see if the noise goes away. Failing that.. just post a sign at the toilet door to warn future visitors of the pending screaming noise;) something like the following should be interesting. WARNING: THIS TOILET SCREAMS IF YOU DON'T FLUSH AFTER USE !

Sorry if i caught you off guard with that signeage. but you can see how interesting it would be to put on various signs to amuse the visitor while you wait to accumulate mYLOT funds for the plumber to finally fix the offending noise ;) Another sign might read: WARNING: FIRE DRILL POSSIBLE TODAY - DO NOT BUTTON DO NOT ZIP NO TIME - LEAVE THE TOILET IMMEDIATELY WHEN YOU HEAR THE SIREN !

Mine's become so loud and lasts so long, I go to one of the other bathrooms instead of even trying the one in teh master suite. Several people have told me there's a simple soution; all I need to do is bleed the pipes. Does anyone know what that means? How's it done?

I am having the same problem. While I cannot figure out the cause of the noise -- mine makes a loud screeching noise -- I do know that the main problem is that the flapper is not sealing after a flush, and so the water from the tank continues to drizzle into the toilet. After a while the water level in the tank is too low and it needs to fill up back to the acceptable level. My theory RE the noise when the tank is refilling is the same as a previous poster, that -- for whatever reason -- there is too much air coming in the pipe with the water. I am really tired of this noise, and it is starting to worry me. I might call in a plumber, if I cannot get a definitive answer. Anyone else have any other ideas or suggestions? Is the air problem a big concern? My toilet was installed new about four years ago, as part of a refit required because of a major plumbing problem. I just could not handle another major plumbing issue right now!

I think its just the pressure, maybe you just need to tone down a bit the knob of water intake to your flash. Its either this or you have to adjust the float lever to close at a much lower level, but the first one is much simpler to do.

I don't know anything about toilets or fixing them, but that does sound right. Thanks. I will check both items.

It's singing you a lullaby. heehee. I have no idea why your toilet is screaming at you. Maybe it does not like your cleanser? heehee

I guess it depends on how you look at it. The worst thing that can possibly happen is a really huge backup. That would send me mad. Not to mention the mess. Or maybe its just a stupid toilet. If it wants to screech, ginge or waddle, let it. Don't let it grow on your mind. Then you might think there's a monster in there waiting to leap out and create havoc. When you've got the cash call the plumber. It might be a loose washer. One that costs a few cents. Who knows ?

Wow never heard that one in my toilet. That sounds weird but maybe its better you find a good plumber who could best answer your queries. But if you are pretty adventurous then you might want to go to a DIY shop and ask if there is any solution to your problem.

mine does that every time the tank fills back up. i'm pretty sure it's air in the line somewhere. it's annoying, but it's not an immediately fix-need.

Yes! I think your toilet is screaming at you to unplug the holes around the top of the bowel. My toilet wouldn't flush everything the first flush. It obviously wanted another flush. Well, this got tiresome so I took a small sharp tool and unplugged the small holes around the top. That solved the problem quickly, and permanently.

I'm not sure what's the sound you mentioned. You can trty ti fix it first, if it's not fixed, you can call for a plumber. You can also ask your friend is there any good plumber to be called.

Ouch! I have no clue what to tell you on that one but I imagine that sound would be giving me a headache! Never heard anything like that from a toilet before though, thankfully! To be honest I am not sure there is a DIY answer to that one but I sincerely hope there is and someone here can give it to you. Maybe there's a plumber on here who doesn't mind giving a little free advice.

I've never heard of this problem before. I would be worried too, since the last time my toilet acted weird, it threw up it's lunch all over my poor apartment, and out into the hallway. I hope your toilet isn't sicker than it's acting.

wow...never heard of such a thing. I wish I could help. Myself, I wouldn't worry about it if it seems to be working good otherwise. Marsha

Sounds like the water supply flowing from the pipe has a huge amount of air causing this sounds. It will then back to normal in a few hours after the air portion of the pipe will be covered by the water itself.
