Hi all. I find that i am slouching all the time and do not have a very good posture at all. When i am sat at my PC i find that my shoulders and neck really start to ache and feel uncomfortable because i am slouching all the time. How can i improve my posture? is there an exercise that helps to improve posture? I am worried that if i keep slouching like this all the time.. i may be bent over when i get older.

Yes using a computer isnt too good for the posture!!and im a terrible `slumper`...and im sure that I will end up with a hump on my back...but never to worry!!..The one thing that I find increasingly irritates me is if im sewing for long periods..and then my shoulders feel so tight and they ache..and then im into the ibuprofen packet...But im using a laptop..but that just encourages you to slump in the chair even more so...When im standing I often try to correct my posture and try to stand up tall..but on the whole it doesnt work for long!!

I remeber seeing a programme on television that was saying that we were the nearest thing to the apes!!and that we were actually meant to be quadrapeds...so you may very well be right!!

Yes, slouching is very bad for our posture. We did not noticed it too often because we are very busy doing our work. There is an exercise which will be very helpful especially if we are always infront of our computer. Actually it is called office exercises. One way I know is this: Stretch your back while sitting, make sure your feet are flat on the floor. Put both of your palms on the side of the chair just besides your thighs, make sure your back is straight and breath in and hold your breath for 10 to 20 seconds then release your breath slowly. Do it 3 counts each set and 3 times a day.

You can put rolled towel or small pillow on your lower back or if your back rest is high, you can lso put rolled towel or a small pillow at the back of your neck. As you can can see in this illustration : www.spinetime.com/media/spine1.jpg , when you look at the spine on side view, it is not totally straight. It curves forward in the area of the neck, it curves backward in the area of the upper back and then curves back again in the lower back. By placing pillows in the neck area and lower back, the spine can rest comfortably and correctly while conforming to the bulges of the pillow. It is comfortable in the sense that the muscles in this area will not have to exert so much effort to maintain a correct posture. All it has to do is to rest on the pillow while maintaining correct posture.
