my mom and my sis do that also. it is a good way to clean the chicken meat.. however we are limiting now the intake of chicken since most of the members of the family has developed an allergy to this food.

I wash it with tap water though I do like your idea from you mother. Depending on what market sometimes i dont wash it all just cook it. The market where i buy meat they cut it fresh and to be honest its not what goes in the mouth that makes you unclean its what comes out. I used to be the type to worry about these things and I was always sick now I will eat anything almost from anywhere and am healthier than ever. Does the salt and turmenic change the taist? :)

I wash the chicken well once or twice with water and then let it be in water with a tbsp of salt/vinegar added to it. Let it be for 10 minutes then again watch well with running water and cook. Try out the delicious chicken recipes at http://www.ifood.tv/network/chicken/recipes

With a frozen turkey, I wash my hands, then the plastic covered bird, then unwrap it with scissors. I wash it again in warm water. I then separate the giblets from the bird, cook them in the crock pot, then roast the bird slowly but completely. That should kill everything needing killing.

I wash chicken, pork and some beef under running tap water. I do not use salt because we have to limit salt for health reasons.

Oh a little lemon juice too is good to add to the water to wash meat in.
