Whatever are those software installed in your computer, are they always the latest? Whenever there are new versions released, do you change yours into those new ones immediately? Well, I am the an IT student. And being left behind is something not good for me I believe. That is why all applications installed here in my comp are all latest versions. Having the latest is what makes me different from my classmates. It also gives me the advantage ^_^

Hi.
Indeed it is a good thing to be in front in any field and specially in our field of IT(I am also a student in the same stream). I used to update my system to the latest ones as soon as they hit the shelves but over the years I have come to know that not all the latest versions are worth having. Some of the latest versions take too many of the system sources and don't perform as good as the previous ones. If I feel something like that then I usually shift back to an earlier version.

There are software that needs to be updated at once and there are not. As much as possible I read first the change log for any possible effects with my current system. If I need to evaluate a new version then I will install the new one to a different location so that I could still use the old one. Only after testing it for compatibility issues and it pass will I remove or overwrite the old one.

that's exactly what i do :) .
I hate it when a software update that's not in beta anymore, still has some bugs in it for my own system, so i'm always carefull.
I found that most linux-... (can't come up with the right name) are very easy in upgrading installed software. Often much easyer and systemfriendly in comparison with windows.
With mac i don't know, mac is too expensive for what you get, in my opinion.

i use http://www.filehippo.com they have a scanner that scans your computer and automatically tell you which software updates are available for your system.
plus if you don't like the way a new download is working, they list ALL versions of that software so you can download an older version if you wish.

Like a few others have mentioned on here, I am selective when it comes to choosing which software should be continuously updated. I always ensure that I have the latest versions of my anti-virus and firewall software as these to me are the most important pieces of software.
I felt like I have been forced to upgrade my Microsoft Office because people are constantly using the docx file format, which can't be used for the older Microsoft Offices. Upgrading software should provide additional functional features; as far as I can see, I would still be perfectly happy with Microsoft Office 1997!

i don't agree on the microsoft office 1997 :p . But i'm a tablet user, so don't pay attention to me.
(for tablet users, the latest office gives you the best experience of the advantages you get with a tablet) ... i so hope open-office gets them too in the near future. I hate to pay for using the bugy programs of microsoft.

Lol that's fair enough. I'm a desktop and a laptop user :P I find the latest version of office to be a bit of a pain in the backside especially the interface.

Hey gicarlo, my friend is just like you. He will get all the latest software and hardware for his computer. His Windows is SP3, his codec covers all type of media and it is always the new one, he has friendster, myspace, facebook. He's just a person who takes the trouble to have all there is to make his computer super-powerful. As for me, I just download the basic stuffs that I think is necessary.

I don't really go out of my way to get the latest software and spend too much money on having too many of the new things. I do usually just get the updates installed if they are free updates as they should be. I think sometimes there is way too many things out there that we already need to pay money for and in this day and age seems like somethings don't get any cheaper. It is nice to have the latest of technology though. I think sometimes we all wish for that.

hello, as for me, some software that I have in my computer are latest and updated. They are automatically updated or at least given me an option to update it. The same with the people who comment here, I am selective to the software I wanted to be updated. However, the usual software that I often used and necessary to me, I wanted to be updated always. Just like you said it will give us big advantages if it was updated.

Some of software in my computer is the latest while others not. When there are new versions released,i will search the internet to see what's the users' opinion. If they say yes and i'll download.if not,i will wait and still use the old one.Although some software is not the latest, its functions are still meet my needs. So i won't change it unless the new one is really awesome.:D

Well not all maybe.
You will always be given an option to upate a software.
But in the end it turns out that they have a newer version released and your software becomes outdated easily.
I think that sometimes it's futile to always get the latest softwares for your pc.

i try to keep them up to date.
When i like some softwares which are sharewares, i save some money and buy them. And usually these softwares do not give away new versions. You have to buy new one. So i do not buy next version as long as it brings so many new features. I wait a while and buy new version.

I do not upgrade my software frequently. I usually get used to the programs/applications and I do not bother going through the hassle of upgrading every time a new release comes out. I only upgrade if it is completely necessary, or benefits me a lot.
