Am I speaking to the REAL you?

I don't like to share too much personal information when I'm talking on the net. I don't tell fibs, but sometimes I avoid going into too much detail. How about you? Is the person I'm reading about here on myLot or elsewhere that you post the REAL you? Or do you have a personality that's a little bit different for when you're online? If I read through all your posts, would I get to know you, or do you hold back?

You will be so surprised with the amount of authenticity I have presented myself in mylot when you happen to meet me in person. It is always easier for me to be myself. That is the main reason.I am very bad in remembering lies.So I never lie to impress anyone.

Lying is totally different from limiting what is out for all to see. I do not think you all have to know all about me. Just enough to be interesting.

Telling outright lies is liable to tie people in knots in the long run, but I do try and limit the amount of personal information I publish.

I am as real as an imaginary person can be. You know a fair bit about me (if you have read your PMs) than most. The things that are missing are my "real" name and address and my Blog address. There is quite a lot about me out there and one or two people here know most things. I don't tell lies - although some of my "story" discussions are entirely fictitious. I have stopped caring whether people "know" me or not. I am me and I know that I am real.

I do? I know that you live in Portugal (I think), have a multi lingual partner, two children (male?) and keep chickens. That's it. If you've told me more I have never received it.

I'm sorry my reply above sounded a bit brusque. Put it down to old age. LOL.

And you know more about me than average too! I don't mind sharing information with individuals, but am more wary about posting it for all and sundry to see.

I think you are seeing the real me. Maybe a little bit nicer than the me you might meet on the street. I talk about my family, and my pets. I do not always give full names, but the people are real.

A bit nicer than reality? Me too I suppose. Having to write my responses allows me those extra few seconds to censor myself sometimes! There are those who seem to find the anonymity (sp?!) of the net the perfect cover for being downright obnoxious. I've never understood that.

I'm one of these people who try and be open and honest about themselves, but without giving away sensitive information. My personality changes with my moods, something about being a woman and it is my right! lol. But, generally, I am the same all the time, just more hyper or more sleepy. Who I am online is the same as I am off line, and I think my contributions here would show that. I do respond to the tone of what I am reading though, so if it is something from a member I don't know or who is a little more on the sensitive side, I adapt my response to accommodate their feelings. I don't like offending people so have had to learn to 'personality profile' and respond accordingly.

Sometimes it's hard to gauge tone on the internet, so I think that you do have to be quite careful when you are responding to people that you don't know well.

You would probably get to know my basic facts if you read my posts. I never, ever give my real name on the net or which street my house is one, stuff like that. But my personality is not hidden, it's the real me you see here on myLot!

Right, we all have to be a little more careful about our personal information. I usually use a nickname, but what I feel and express through the net are very much me. I don't pretend to be someone or something that I'm not - it's very difficult to keep up with pretense.

I agree. If you start lying you're bound to make a mistake at some stage and end up with egg on your face!

HI GreenMoo, I would say, all my posts and responses would reflect me 100%, I am not holding anything back or trying to be good just for the sake of earning..When I am not entertaining rude comments in my post that it's me in real and when I am giving my advises here that is also the real me to my relatives and family members! Cheers!

If they are that, I am sure there is nothing for them to be scared not to tell since we don't know each other here! But, I can feel also that most of the people whom I talked too are real and giving their opinions and views base on who really they are!

Most people are saying that they are true to life here on myLot. I wonder though if anyone would really tall the truth to this question if they weren't though?

I would only speak to the level I want to share. so basically, there would be restriction to what I would reveal to anyone on the net. I might share my personal experience for someone's sake when the person needs to share or needs encouragement, but I won't tell the name, anyone's name within my talk. however, I'm honest in expressing my opinion and when I'm telling about things, but that's the most I would do, and I would keep what I should keep as private things.

I tell only what I want to tell.. I don't mind talking about my family or some of my life experiences, but I do tell only what I want to tell.. It is the real me but without any of the extra baggage or excess problems.. I do show my real personaltily on Mylot.. I am a happy go lucky person.. I believe that happiness is the key to a longer happier life and beside, it can't hurt anything to be happy.. I hold back only what is none of anyone's business.. The rest is the real me..

My life is an open book. I do omit a few details, but everything in my posts is the real me. I used to make up fairy tales to tell online to get attention, this was back when I was a teen... It got to a point where I forgot what story I told to whom, and occasionally I was caught in a lie... so I learned quickly not to lie anymore.

I wouldn't lie either, but I do try to talk generally rather than in specifics sometimes. It's hard to think of an example though when I try! I had a lodger once who used to make up the most outrageous stories she used to tell online. I felt embarrassed on her behalf!

Hey you I like this post and thanks for sharing it . For me what you see is what you get . I am an open book for the most part . When I write I wear my heart on my sleeve . I am sure there are many people out there who are a little different when they write , and some many hold back personal things . I know when I write it sometimes just will happen adding is small persoal things . There are some topics where I will hold back . I do think in each thing we write there is a little of us in there .

If you added up all the little things we post, you'd probably be able to come up with quite a long list. And little things make a big thing don't they?

Hmmm interesting. There are many fakes out there I know. I'm not one of them. The things that people read about me, the way I respond are all the true me. There are really only two things I will not be honest about online. One is my real name, and one is the exact location of where I live. Only true friends I've known for years know this information. This hold back stems from having a real life stalker three years ago. Very scary situation indeed. Ended up having the police involved and me moving three states away as well.

That's really scary, and it is no wonder that you are both a little wary of letting too much personal information become available now.

Me too. I don't tell my real (last) name or address online either. I had a stalker in real life too. I can't stand the thought of someone knowing where I am and what I'm doing. Just stay home and talk to me from your computer please! Lol! If anyone else ever stalks me, they will be watching a nice sweet girl turn into something like the Incredible Hulk! Lol!

i totally understand , these days you have to be skeptical of what you say especially with all these predators that pretend to be someone else. i only tell what is necessary. i dont give out my address or phone numbers to any one i dont know. you have to be very careful these days

I wouldn't give out personal details like that on a public forum like this, but I'd share them privately with an individual i expect.

My personality is different depending who I'm talking to and what I talk about. I hold just a small part of myself...and I'm a pretty steady but changeable person lol. I've also decided to be more or less of an open book. I think it largely comes from my "Devil may care" attitude I carry around with me. I -used- to be a pretty good liar, but I kinda regard lying today, with distaste. However, getting to know the real me's rather hard. You'd know alot of my thoughts and how I feel on alot of topics, but me...I'm more than all those things. The internet is only one place I express myself, and as I said..I do hold a small part of myself back. The odds would be decent however, of your chances of getting to know me increasing...it's just not a sure thing.

I want to be real here, in every response I responded here its my own opinion and I really want to share my thoughts and opinions about the topic...if i hate or dislike something i'll definitely hate and respond about the topic that I hate this stuff, etc. etc.

You would get the real me. I'm too old to play at being somebody else. I do sometimes lie a little about my age, but not enough to put me into another age bracket altogether.

I agree with you...I don't like to share too much personal information (such as my name) either but I took a bold move a few days ago and changed my profile picture to a real one. I know I look soooooooo mean in this picutre, it is actually cropped from a picture taken at Thanksgiving when I was helping a young niece build something so I was concentrating and not smiling...Ha....I think people can see my personality when they read my posts...I try to keep it light and fun...serious when needed. My screen name looks like I am a preacher or something...(NOT)...what it really means fits your discussion topic perfectly...in a nutshell it means..realizing there are alot of scams and false impressions online....I will tell you the truth as best I can and that you can trust me as a sincere person.

I've heard it remarked and It appears true that just what "the real you" is, it will never be known. That is because we are all the sum total of our experiences. Attitudes and ways of handling people in life tend as you gain more experience. Or, from another perspective, the "real you" is a constantly changing personal generated for different social situations. But, I suppose beneath all the trappings of being part of a society, there is a basic you that leands you on your purpose in life, wherever that trail may lead.

I am as honest on here as I can possibly be, however i do not share my private and personal information as well as details about myself that I feel as strangers (because that is what we all are here)it is not information that anyone is privy to. If we developed a different relationship then in time you would learn all there is to know about me.
