Are you a student of psychology? Or just interested in it.

I was just wondering how many people here study or studied psychology in college and how many people just have an interest in it in general.
Personally, I was back and forth about my major when I was in psychology. I had a strong interest in psychology, specifically abnormal psychology and psychological disorders/mental illnesses. But psych in whole interests me. I eventually got to the point where I had to find my best way to finish my degree, so I went with Interdisciplinary Studies; this was where I worked with an advisor to create a major based on my interests, and work with the courses I had already taken. And I had obviously taken a lot of psychology, and I took a bit of studio art classes. So that's what I ended up doing, I combined psychology and studio art. I now wish I had just done straight out Psych major, and someday I may go back and bring up my gpa a little so I can look into grad school.
But for now I still read a lot about psychology, think about it, and I still even have my textbooks. I have all these ideas for discussions based on things I learned in psych. But I don't know if others will be interested. Most though are relate to human nature though, so I do think I will probably eventually post some of them.

That's great! I definitely don't think you have to go to college to learn about psychology, or anything else for that matter! I have a college degree and I still don't feel like I'm qualified to do anything, but at least it gave me the opportunity to learn so much about a subject I love. I was always very interested in mental health issues, because I've dealt with some myself, and addictions run in my family, and I have had a lot of friends who had issues. So basically my whole life has been observing psychology. So formally learning about it was pretty easy for me, and definitely very interesting.
LOL but that is so great to make the best of your situation and not let something like not being able to go to college get in the way of learning. Because I feel like I could have learned about psychology just as good had I not gone to college.

yeah but it would be nice to have something to show for my obsessive reading about it lol.. and some times i feel like the people that come to me for advice thing im off some times but they still keep coming back so i guess they trust me enough in the end to return lol.. i had posted some where before (cant remember if you had responded to it or not) but that a lot of people that get into psychology are usually trying to figure out themselves which i think i was trying to figure out people in general.. i knew i was depressed a lot but it took years before i figured out it wasnt normal lol.. which is sad since i was reading about it lol

LOL yea, true.. that's how I am with medical stuff, which I have more recently started getting into, I'm considering going to techical school eventually to be a surgical tech, and I have been reading a lot about it, but I'd feel like it really meant something if I was actually in school doing it! LOL
I actually did see that discussion of yours. I saw it after I replied to your response because it was at the bottom where they list related discussions. I actually just finished responding to it.

I only studied a few classes of it at the university. I was more inclined to philosophy, but psychology was alright too. If you do post discussions about psychology I might be able to share thoughts on them, but they may take time for a response. I do hope you get other people to respond to your discussions too.

That's cool, I'm sure you will have input if I post questions, because most of them aren't directly psych related, but they certainly are about human issues and human nature. And Philosophy is definitely a part of that.

Hi Greys, I am very much interested in psychology but it was not developed until I started teaching. Now I wished I studied psychology instead of just BA in English. It's a very amazing subject and field in general. I have had students who were dyslexics, ADHD and the likes but too bad I can't help them very much because I knew nothing about those cases before until I met them. I read and read articles and then consequently I realized I want to be a child psychologist.
Please do post more about psychology.

Actually psychology is very interesting topic in my college days. I'm interested with is but no chance to continue to study about it. I am very focused to my major subject thats why I have no time to study more in psychology. Maybe for sometime if I have a chance to read and learn psychology I will.

Hello greys!
Psych was my major in college and I took a year of it in grad school... eventually i gave up in studying psychology academically and the work that i have right now is far far far away from psych. i took up psych in college because i wanted to have a better understanding of myself and other people's minds too. almost everything about a person's being can be explained by psychology in one way or another based on its numerous theories. i am also fascinated with abnormal psych...that seems to be my favorite branch of psychology because it delves into the unusual workings of the human mind, the nature and characteristics of disorders, and i did fairly well with abnormal psych related subjects. :D developmental psych is essential too because it is one of the basics one must learn in order to know how to understand and explain one's life history but i have had a hard time wracking all those theories in my brain...there's more to psychology than freud's absurd but pioneering studies. :D
when i was in my senior year in collede, we were asked by our prof to formulate a new approach or develop an existing theory and i was quite interested in art therapy (which some people thought and still think is not too scientific at all ergo, not really related to psych) because i love art too. i didn't get much about that but it still sparks interest whenever i "run into" it. when i was in grad school, i didn't do much...well my grades were ok but i've realized my interests in pursuing a career in psychology have waned. i still love psych for what it is and for the purpose of learning how to deal with the human psyche not just mine but that of other people's minds too BUT i don't have the confidence of practicing psych as a profession...guess i still have to deal with my issues about that!
i wish you the best in pursuing your dreams with psych.:D the world needs more psychologists...the world just doesn't want to admit it. good luck to you! :D

No, I think psychology has never appealed to me-nearly all the professors of psychology i knew in the University nver maried and they live alone and act very wierd-I also know of a good fried of mine who majored in psychology who seemed to make his friends uncomfortable becaus he seems to ead your mind even before you acted-it made us asociate psychology with some kind of witchcraft! I ended up majoring in administration.

LOL Oh wow, I never thought of it that way. I personally can't read minds, and I don't try. But I do sometimes get very strong instincts about people, sometimes they are correct, sometimes they are not. And really that is the thing about psychology, sometimes it can make you think everyone is crazy just because they have a certain personality characteristic, but when you really are educated about it, you can usually acknowledge that just because a person says or does something that it doesn't automatically mean they have a psychological disorder.
It definitely has nothing to do with witchcraft or anything like that. It's just understand people, and why they do the things they do.
Personally, even before I studied psychology I got strong instincts about certain people, when it came to certain issues that I had, and sometimes I was right, and sometimes my mind played tricks on me, but for the most part when I had an instinct about someone it was usually at least partially true.
But I definitely understand that everyone has their own views on psychology, and I respect that.

I am not a student of psychology, but my girlfriend is. Anyway i believe that it can be said that i am also interested on some of it's aspects as i believe that we come across psychological relations every day starting from our jobs, schools, shopping, up to studying people and establishing relationships.

That was the course I planned to take up but wasn't able to do so... I tried to do good instead on my Psychology subjects because I truly enjoy learning how people think and understand one's behavior... I could still engage in psychology if I want to, if i will pursue my career as a Psychiatrict Nurse. :)

Well to be honest while my interest in psychology is huge (and I"ve been interested in it for years and years), I ended up getting degree in sociology. I want to write my thesis on the impact of media and internet on women, because it's a fascinating subject.
When I"m done with that I"ll probably do post-graduate studies in psychology. Maybe something connected to my current field of studies. But I'll definitely go into pathologies as well Heh

I love psychology. I used to dream about becoming a psychogist, but I never actually studied psychology at university. I applied a couple of time but I never got accepted. In my country it is not easy to get accepted, they were looking for 200 students but more than 2000 people applied every time, and eventually I quit trying and chose another subject instead.
I am still very interested in this area and I have thought about becoming a psychotherapist instead (in the future) It is not that hard to get accepted but it is a private education so it's really expensive and I would have to save up some money first.
I read a lot of psychology books, because I find it very interesting. Abnormal psychology is probably my favourite, but I also like to read about many other things :-)

I'm currently minoring in psychology, but I think I would like to make it a double major. I'm not sure because I don't want to be in school forever lol. I never took psych courses in high school and was thrilled after taking the first course in college. For some reason, I think most of the information comes naturally to me. Maybe that is because I like to read so much. I'm not sure. Either way, I love psychology and wish you the best of luck on your continuing education!

I have my Bs in General Psychology and I am currently in the Masters program specializing in Forensic Psy. I love psychology and I have found that psy and sociology go hand in hand. Forensic psys and criminologists are one in the same really just different titles in the workforce. There are so many options with degrees in such feilds as psy, sociology, criminology, and even anthropology. It's amazing how they all fit together!

Knowing things has always fascinated me and knowing myself was foremost of all in my agenda. I read books on lots of things including psychology. However, the biggest breakthroughs that I have done in this regard came from my own introspection and meditation. Words, especially other people's words don't really ring so true unless validated and verified by your own experience and experimentation. Cheers!!

I'm minoring in it. My major is Education, but love what I learn from psychology. I think it's all about therapy and understanding life. It's really interesting. I've been making really good grades in all my psychology classes also. I would suggest it to anyone who had an interest in it. Good luck!
