I joined Etsy several months ago and listed a few of my baby blankets and afghans, but didn't really hold out much hope of a sale since there is a lot of competition out there. There are some very crafty people selling some incredibly beautiful things there and I am truly impressed.
Well I got an email on Saturday saying that I made my first sale! A woman had purchased one of my baby blankets and paid for it immediately, and I've just put it in the mail to her today. I've included a picture below. I sure hope she likes it!
What sort of crafts do you make? Do you have a shop on etsy?

The baby blanket is beautiful. You did a really good job on it. It looks like quality work! I am not familiar with Etsy. Then again I do not do any crafts or anything like that. I don't know if that is what Etsy is centered around or not. I will check it out. Take care and happy lotting!! :)

I just searched out at Etsy and found lots of Tinkerbell stuff, we are such big fans.
I did do a search for local football team stuff and there is some but not what I am thinking. I think this might be a good place to list some things.
Also, I wonder if a lot of people who are not into crafts know about the site?

Etsy is an online shop for people that create handmade items. There are so many talented people out there making some incredibly creative items, I sure can't compete. I was very happy to make this one sale!
I believe it's just etsy.com, but I put my link above and know you can get there from that.

How exciting! I sold one set of the little angels I make on etsy, and I was so excited.
I've had some luck selling knitting on craigslist, actually - people post that they need items knitted for their stores, and I've knitted a few.

Wow, how did you find the listings on craigslist? What category would that be under?
I've often thought about taking some of my afghans to some or the high end furniture stores to see if they would be interested in purchasing them for staging purposes, or to put a tag on them with my information to sell them.
I've been too chicken to go any further than the thought, though.

Congratulations!! After two years on etsy I have two sales but I am not very active on there. I do ceeramics, polymer clay, and I just started making bears. I have Rufus listed on ebay and hope he sells.

Yes, I saw your Rufus and he is absolutely adorable. I'm sure you'll do well with him (and maybe some brothers/sisters?).
I know some friends that worked with polymer clay and it is an amazing medium. I've got a few things that she made and sold and they are gorgeous.

Sorry to poke my nose in here, but I just read what you said about polymer clay. That what I'm using for my bas relief! I'm inspired now!

Marie--
Etsy has never been my thing, but I have a friend who does very well there with her crochet and other random crafts. Her store is: scarywhitegirl Or maybe that's just her user name. She has tons of cute and unique stuff, but more importantly the etsy folks in her city--Seattle--actually get together in RL and do craft fairs and stuff exchanges. You might want to look for something like that in your area.

Thanks. I think there are a couple of groups here in Ohio, but none anywhere near me.
I don't have many things up, but as long as I'm not losing money, I'm ok. I need to get a few more of my things listed, though, and finish a few more that I have going.

Etsy is an online shop just for people that make handcrafted items. If you're looking for something handmade of good quality, Etsy is the place to go!
I believe it's just etsy.com, but if you look at one of the discussions above, I think I put my link there, and you can find the home page through that I'm sure.

I did quite a bit of cross stitch several years ago, but I gave it up. I don't do much of anything now except a bit of crochet.
Working on projects for the VA patients now.

I'm not into crafts even thou my dad always told me I should have some kind of hobby or job working with my hands being I was always building stuff for my guinea pigs when I was a kid and other stuff. That's great you finally sold a blanket. Maybe now you will sell more.

Goodness, there are so many things out there that I'm sure there is something that could interest you. I don't have the patience or talent for a lot of the beautiful things I see, but a basic crochet is very relaxing to me, and I thoroughly enjoy seeing what appears from my hands.

Thanks Alexsis. I don't think there is a large market for what I do, but I enjoy it anyway, so no big deal.

We were thinking about Etsy! What do you think?

Thanks, I just had her take pictures of all the ones she has made. The stinker wrote down a name for each one which will be perfect for when we list them.
Thanks for the advice.

Can't hurt. It's only .20 to list each item for errrrr, 3 or 4 months, I think, and then a small percentage if/when the item sells.
If your bill is under $1 they wait until it accumulates. I listed 4 things so it was only .80 so I didn't have to pay anything at all until that item sold.

What a beautiful baby blanket. Great job.
When I home schooled my son, he and his dad and I used to do lots of crafts and take them to craft fairs and festivals. (We needed the income, since I was not working outside the home.)
We didn't specialize in any one thing, but selected the fairs and festivals we wanted to attend, then started making things. Our favorite was a Watermelon Festival in central Florida. It was certainly my son's favorite, because his crafts (he was around 9 at the time) always sold out first, and he used the money to ride and eat. :-) I still have an awesome planter he painted - with the inside looking just like a watermelon.
I used to sell a frugal newsletter at the craft fairs - and usually sold 100-150 copies. I also made "grandma remembers" books - like the ones now sold in card stores. And painted jars with messages in them.
I also had a gift basket business back then.

Wow, you stayed pretty busy. Good for you, and for including your son as well. All of that is definitely part of an education.
I'll bet that watermelon planter of his was adorable. Do you have a picture by any chance? I'd love to see it.

Congratulations on your sale! I do many kinds of crafts. Mostly lately I've been making beaded jewelry and I also make patterns for some of my designs. I learned to crochet when I was 4 and have done a lot of crochet work through the years. Just now I'm starting to get into crocheting bags etc. out of plastic grocery bags.
I also make natural soap, salves and other skin care products.
I have an Etsy shop but haven't sold any of my jewelry. The patterns sell better.

As I mentioned above, my husband has been playing with rocks (LOL) and I hope that between us we can make a few things and get those listed as well. He really enjoys it.
I've found several patterns for crocheting with bags and would love to do it, but I can't seem to get mine to work well without breaking. I know you need a large hook so I bought a big plastic one, and maybe that's the problem - it sorta sticks to it. What type of needle do you use?

I use an aluminum hook, various sizes depending on how wide I cut the strips. I have some of the huge plastic hooks that I used to use to make the rag strip baskets, but I haven't tried using them on the plastic bags. Both of the ones I have are too big to give me the effect I want.

Congratulations! I hope you have many more sales.
I've saw Etsy on some blog when dropping Entrecards, but never knew what it was all about. Is it just for crafters? Is there a website you join and put your stuff up for sale on? What is it all about?

Yes, its just etsy.com and its just for handcraft items, or supplies to make handcrafted items.
It costs .20 to list an item I think for 3 or 4 months, and then you pay a small percentage when it is sold.
I listed a couple of my baby blankets and afghans, and this is the only one that sold before they expired.

If you make anything at all, you should make a shop. It's a great site and the fees aren't bad at all. I believe it's only .20 to list an item, and they can be there for several months I believe it is.

That's awesome that you made your first Sale on ETSY. I've heard of it but I don't have a shop there. Though one day when things slow down a bit I might check into it a bit further. I like crocheting and making jewelry with beads. But haven't had much time to do either for a bit.

Go ahead and check it out. It only costs .20 to list an item, and they don't bill you until you have at least $1.00 in fees due.
I listed 4 things so my bill came to .80 and they've been listed for a couple of months now and I haven't had to pay anything. I'm sure I will now since I made a sale, but it's still a very minimal amount.

Congratulations on your first sale on Etsy. When I sold my first item it was pretty exciting. I have also been with Etsy several months now and have only sold a couple of items. If I was more active with it I know I could sell more. I really need to list more and get to making more jewelry. It is competitive but there are many beautiful things on the Etsy site. Good luck to you with your Etsy shop.

You did a really good job on the baby blanket that you just sold on Etsy. I do not really do any crafty stuff. I am more into baking than crafts. My grandmother used to make baby blankets, afghans, quilts, doilies, and all that stuff. She loved it. I never learned how.

Thanks!
I don't do any of the fancy things like doilies and such, I just can't master a pattern that goes round and round; it's too easy to lose my place.
I prefer to do baby blankets, afghans, scarves and that sort of thing. You can put it down and pick it back up at any time and not have to worry about where you left off. I've never had one come out lopsided yet!
I also do place mats, hot pads/trivets, and dishcloths too.

It looks like she's going to love the baby blanket...it's beautiful! Isn't it a great feeling when you find out that someone, somewhere has purchased something you made with your own hands? I've been on Etsy for nearly a year and I still get that warm-fuzzy feeling when someone spends their hard earned money on something I personally created.
I make handmade jewelry...talk about a tough market to sell in , but it's a lot of fun and the people at Etsy are just great and very supportive. I joined the street team for New Jersey and we all put each other in the treasuries when we get one (one of my items were in a front page treasury on Etsy on Saturday!)
What's the name of your shop, I'd like to stop by, take a look and send a heart or two your way!
Congrats on your first sale and may there be many more to follow!

I've toyed with the idea of making jewelry too, but that market is saturated too. I still enjoy playing with it, though, and probably will pick it up again since my husband is now doing a few different things.
My shop is at http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5675182
I've only got three things up right now.
Thanks!
