Toilet paper - Over or Under?

One of our fellow mylotters posted a discussion about toothpaste and which part of the tube you squeeze it from (a pet peeve thing). It got me thinking of other pet peeves I have regarding the bathroom and it came to me, it was which way the toilet paper is in, over or under.
I prefer over. Some may not even think about this, but for me it annoys me when I am in my bathroom and the toilet paper is under because then it hangs down and long and when people pull the toilet paper they just leave it hanging. When it is over it is generally torn that it rests neatly on top of the roll.
Do you have a preference for the direction of your toilet paper?

Either way is okay for most situations and is just a matter of taste. As for it being left hanging down, just roll it back if it bothers you. There are a few situations where keeping it under is better. They are these:
When you have small children or cats in the house. It is too easy for them to get hold of the roll and just start rolling as a game...and the paper ends up all over the floor....so for them...it is better to keep the paper on the under side.
When you have elderly, or handicapped people it may be better to have it over the top because since it hangs away from the wall, it is easier for stiff or sore fingers to get hold of it. That was something I learned working in a nursing home for years.
Other than these or other similar situations, it is just a matter of taste. I personally don't care which way it is rolled. All I care about is that it is available when needed!

While it is true that it may hang down, I prefer under. Having spent 25 years as a custodian and dealing with kids at home I can say that under is better, if only because people tend to use less paper that way. I have never figured out why that is, but it is :)

I really never have had a preference, I just put it on the roll how ever I take it out of the package.

I prefer that my toilet paper roll from under the roll - from the bottom. It seems to me that it makes it easier to tear off the portion you want when the weight of the roll is holding down the area to be torn.

Definitely under, because it does often hang lower and that way I can find the end in the dark when I get up at night! LOL. As for toothpaste, middle, but I do squeeze from the bottom to keep it up there too.
Another pet peeve - guys who leave the seat up! I can't tell you how many times I've gotten up during the night and almost fell in. UGH

well before this i've never realised this. now that i think about it i'm definitely a over person. good thing is i'm the only one replacing the toilet paper. so my toilet paper is always over. even if it's under, i'd just take it out and replace it in the over way. it's a sub-concious thing i.e. i don't even realise i'm doing that. i'd just feel very awkward and redo it over again.

Hi risris-I prefer my toilet paper over mainly cause it is more accessible and you seem to be able to get just what you need-when it is under it peeves me the fact it is just dangleing there!!

I don't even have a roll hanger now thanks to my children, so I just leave it sitting on the shelf next to the toilet. But when I was younger I always hung it under because I thought someone could hide something behind it if it were hanging down a bit.

I have to say over. I grew up with it like this, so maybe that is why. If it is under it touches the wall and sometimes goes alway the way down to the floor...then who wants to use it on your....?My kids are small they put it on like that sometimes and I have to make myself not flip it around in front of them. Plus it is easier to find the beginning of the paper in the middle of the night.

I think I mostly keep the toilet paper over! I like the way it looks better but honestly I dont really pay attention to it when I am putting a roll of paper on- It makes sense though using less paper under... My question always is do you flush with the toilet seat down? BC everyone should just think of all the little water particles that fly out when its flushing!!!

Over so the paper rolls out right. You know what I'm not sure why it has to be that way but its like not right unless its over isn't that crazy.

I prefer it to go over. I also hate it when people let it hang down and drag on the ground. It doesn't seem to do that if it's going over the top. But I also agree with someone else who said that the toilet paper goes so much faster if it goes over the top. It spins off so much faster which is why it's used quicker. Right now, ours is going under and it's driving me crazy, but for once in my life, I'm refusing to change it just because it's not the way I normally prefer it.

hi risris24,
I like mine over the the toilet paper when I put it on the toilet paper holder thing. I've always done it like that, and I guess that I'm just use to it now of doing it that way.
