How does the Mylot rating system work,

United States
July 2, 2008 9:42am CST
While responding to discussions this morning, I just noticed that my 10 in my star had went to a 9.. Why does this happen?? I always respond to all of the emails in my mailbox, I respond to everyone on my friends list and I have started a few discussions.. I am up to 1248 in my posts as of now and can't understand how this has happened.. I try to be as descriptive as possible, I spell check and try to be as informed and friendly as possible.. Why would the rating go down, what is the cause of it going down like that?? It was frustrating when I saw the 9, as I was used to seeing the 10 everytime.. Does anyone know any reasons for why this could be happening.. I appreciate any help.. Thanks for any help..

My guess is some people may have rated you negatively. Who knows why, perhaps they didn't agree with what you posted. Sorry that it happened. Hope you can get it back.

That is part of what I don't underestand, we don't always have to agree, that is the beauty of Mylot.. It is a forum to make each of us heard in our own way.. I do try not to make any over the top statements and i do try to be lighthearted in my comments.. I really can't understand what I could have said that would offend anyone enough to minus me.. Oh well, I will probalby never know.. Anyways thanks so much for the response, have a great day and a great 4th... Donna

It's just the way it goes. I guess it just means that not everyone likes you. Oh well... we really shouldn't let our ratings bother us that much. Of course it's easy for me to say, lol. We'll see if I'll be singing a different tune when mine drops, as I know eventually it will.

I am not sure if it really bothers me or not, it was just a shock to see the 9 after seeing the 10 for so long.. I can learn to live with it, I just posted out of curiosity to see if anyone knew the exact reason for this happening.. Thanks again, Donna

The rating star is dependant on other people rating your discussions and ratings + or -. People aren't supposed to rate you - because they don't agree with your views, but not everyone seems to realise this. Or it's possible that someone was just hitting the - button to make mischief or even by accident with a slip of the mouse. I don't suppose you'll ever know, but I do hope your blue star is back with you soon. I'll pop through this duiscussion in a sec and give you lots of nice +s to help you on your way

I have so many friends on Mylot.. Most of them are giving me a hand up back to the gorgeous blue star.. I do appreciate it and I thank you for it.. I am not sure what could be the reason, I am not too worried about it but I was very curious.. Thanks so much and have a great evening..

I am not really sure why it happens but mine goes up and down too. I think that the rating is supposed to go on how people rate your discussions, could be that someone may have rated you negative accidentally. I notice too that if I lose posts through to deletions then my rating goes down too.

I am not sure how to tell if something was deleted.. Is it your discussions or your responses that get deleted.. I enjoy chatting on Mylot and really hope I haven't offended anyone, but you never know.. I do apologize if I have but I honestly do not know.. Your response reminded me of an old joke, your ratings go up and down, or fluctuate, so when they do does that mean you are flucted again.. Sorry about that, that was a bad joke, you can just delete if you want to but I did think that it was funny.. thanks for the response and have a great evening.. Donna

Star is our standing here... a rate that we get from fellow mylotters. If ever we get POSITIVE RATING it will increase but if we have negative ones IT WILL DECREASE. You may have more response posted but you might have received more negative as well. I really don't know if it is really the case in your situation. Just my speculation

I do know that I have always tried to make good descriptive responses, and have always tried to take the subject serious but still add a bit of lightness to it also.. I am not sure what I could have done to have someone give me a minus.. I have received many "Best Responses" since being on Mylot.. I do hope that I have not offended anyone but I do still have the right to my opinions and thoughts on a subject, just like everyone else.. I always give a plus, I have never given a minus, unless I was asked to do it for a specific reason.. Thanks so very much for your response, I do appreciate it, have a great day... Donna

Tamara, thanks so much for the response.. I think from all of the responses that I have received from this discussion, it is because someone gives you a - on your discussins instead of a +.. You can rate people with a - or a + when you read their responses and someone must have gave me a few -'s.. Have a great evening..

By the way, I did give you a + and you will be back on top before you know it, Good luck to you..

Hey donna! Maybe I am too late to reply here because as I can see you got your 10 star back now. I just got my 10 star the other day. It's usually nine and it went down to 8 twice but now I am glad that I am 10. I think one of the reasons why we have 10 star is the number of activity that we have too. I am not really active for my first month and recently tried to be active and then one day, I found out that mine is 10.

aisaellis22, I always rate the responses and I always rate them with a plus.. Sometimes there are certain persons on here who rate with a negative for no other reason than to be mean, they can drop your star number.. You are doing very well on here and I hope that you continue to do so, it can be hard work sometimes but you can also go at your own pace, which is what I normally do.. Good luck to you..

there are what are called trolls on mylot, they go around and negatively rate people for no reason at all. There is nothing really that we can do about it, even when we complain to admin they don't do anything.

I do believe that it is a troll who has been effecting my rating, but I am not worried.. I know what I do on here and I know how hard I try, so I will let them keep on with their games and I will keep on with my work.. Have a wonderful day and thanks

there were some people going around hitting negative for no reason, you might have had one of those go by you.

That is probably what it is, but I can't understand why.. It doesn't make any sense.. I just wonder how many times you have to get a minus to make a star go down to another number..

It works with + and - that are found on your responses, and discussions, AND photos. So if you end up with a lower star, you have 3 avenues you can get messed up from. Basically, people hit + or - for your discussions (well some do, others do not). The + will raise your overall star rating, which is a digital number. Its represented in whole fraction numerical and as the obvious star graphic. In reality, your rating is a decimal figure and each + and - influence it. From my experience + ratings have less influence than - ratings. Meaning, it takes more + to move up compared to fewer - to move down. Someone could be hitting negative for any opinion they disagreed with (this is against the rules by the way). Or someone could be hitting - just to do so. Don't fret that much over the star. While I take time to debunk the star scam, in the end, its just some graphic. Interestingly enough, other forums have bars related to a persons post count, or titles based on how many posts you've made, or nothing of the sort. The star rating was meant to serve as an indicator of the quality of posting and discussions of the member. Really, the stars do not reflect this at all. If you want an example, simply look at my best responses and other contributions. Also take in mind I've been sent to a 4 rating three times and a 5 once.... The only thing that's changed in my contribution is my time here. And Donna I know you're nice on here. I've not seen anything even remotely glaring from you. If you want to know why I got sent back to the low star ratings it was due to my having an opinion and expressing it, sometimes extensively, other times casually. That's another way a star rating can drop.

I see that you have a very nice white star with a 7 in it, but have 7231 posts.. That has all come about because of someone disagreeing with your thoughts on here, but that is not right.. I haven't read all of your posts but I have read quite a few and responded to a few of them and have found nothing out of the way with your responses.. You have worked hard to get to this high number and no one should be able to - you just for the heck of it.. This system may need to be changed for the better.. I started this discussion because after responding to a discussion, I noticed a 9 on my star and couldn't figure out why.. Someone responded and said that they noticed my rating was 95/100 and by the time I did get the chance to check it again, it was 93/100 and that was in less tha one days time, so I guess I may have made someone mad.. But even as hard as we work and try, someone with a grudge can follow all of our responses and just - us eveertime with no reason, that is the part that is not a fair way to grade on here.. I wish you luck and keep on doing what you are doing, I agree, the star rating system is very flawed.. I also rate everyone with a + and even if they deserve a -, I just don't rate them.. Thanks for responding, sorry for the rambling on and have a great day..

You have had posters rate you negative if your star has come down. Sometimes it is difficult to say why people rate you negataive alot of times I think it is to just be mean and has nothing to do with the discusisons. Good luck getting your star rasied back up again.

Its by a very balanced system that's updated daily. I think that's where people miss out. How have you been using the site recently. How much you have gained that is there from the past ? I'm not sure, of course, how its really done, but in the past two weeks I've put in over 200 responses and a few discussions and today, after quite a while I moved from 6 to 7 this morning. I'm not unhappy about the system. I'm begining to get a better and better idea about the workings of it. So its just to continue and see how far I'd eventually get.

I do understand that but can't figure out for what reason was I rated a negative.. I do know that I am not above getting a negative but I would like to at least know why, then if it is something that I can change, I will be glad to.. I appreciate the thoughts.. Have a great evening, Donna

That stinks, Donna! It doesn't seem likely anyone would give you a negative rating, so maybe one of the polls you answered has been removed. I have read a few comments where people have mentioned myLot sometimes removes polls which do not fulfil the requirements of the site, and maybe if a poll is removed it takes away points from the people who answered it. I'm not really sure - but I hope you get your 10 back soon ... I'll give you a + to help you along!

I appreciate the +, every little bit helps.. I believe from most of the responses to this post, it is becasue someone goes into my discussions and gives me a negative.. I am not going to worry about it, because it doesn't effect my discussions or responses.. I haven't had any discussions removed, or I don't think so, I will have to check.. Thanks so much for the response, I do appreciate it..

It will vary by the rating that other people choose by your response. They can either choose the plus for positive or the minus for negative. It averages out to your rating. So just try to make sure you are posting quality positive material. Good going because I have been stuck at a 9. I have not gotten to hit 10 yet.

I have always had a 10 and never really thought about it until one day I read a discussion asking for everyone to rate them a minus.. I didn't understand that until it was explained to me and I am still not sure that I understand it now.. Good luck on your 10, you deserve it.. thanks much and have a great day, Donna
