Bad service!

July 2, 2008 2:03pm CST
I love trying out new restaurants, cafes and other eating-places. However, recently when I tried out a new restaurant I was greatly disappointed with the service. The food was fabulous but the service left a very bitter taste and I vowed never to go back again (unless it is the last remaining restaurant on earth!) When we arrived the restaurant was very busy so I didn't mind not being acknowledged. Shortly after we had finished eating, a staff came over to clear the table and we were greatly disappointed with her attitude. No acknowledgement, no eye contact, no words and no smiles (not even to my toddler!) By this time the busy period was over so I did expect her at least to make an effort to be polite to the customers. I see it as the restaurant's loss - they certainly will never have my custom again. Have you had any similar experience? And does bad service affect your choice of restaurants?

well, i experience bad service in many restaurants as well in the past... i think it is just so common nowadays people being rude... not only in the restaurants... but everywhere... i agree with you that it is a loss for the business if they hire an employee like that as i wouldn't want to spend my money as well in those places with rude employees... i definitely wouldn't go back to those places as well like you... take care and have a nice day...

Well I've experienced a lot of things like that. The bad thing is when they make you pay for bad service and I really hate that.

Hi magojordan Thanks for the response. I'm not too keen paying for bad service either - sometimes I think the restaurant should pay me to put up with their rudeness!

That happened to me and my friends just last week... we had a get together because one of my friends had just receive a large amount of back pay... so he decided to give us all a treat... we went to this restaurant that is suppose to serve great food at a very affordable price... but sad to say... that the cheap price was because the service was not so great... the waitresses were quite rude... and did not even bother to follow up on our food... we constantly had to badger them just to look if our food was ready... well that is the price we have to pay for cheap but delicious food...

Service certainly does affect my returning to a restaurant, but many times it has to do with that particular waiter or waitress and not the restaurant. I have gone to the same restaurant and gotten excellent service and then terrible service---depends on who is serving me. I have asked for management when the service was so bad that I thought it warranted the manager knowing. This has resulting in being told it would be taken care of to getting free dessert to having my meal paid for. All I wanted was the matter taken care of. BUT someone should be made aware when the service is not good since the managers may not know that you were treated so poorly. Even if it takes a phone call when you return home. Many of the managers will be glad to know it and they realize that you won't be back and want to correct the problem for other customers.

Bad service never really affects my choice of restaurants but I do make it a point to talk to the manager if I get rude service from a waitress or waiter. I also do the same if I get exceptional service from one. Managers like to know how to make their customers happy, so if there is a staff member who makes them unhappy they need to know about it.

Well maybe you should have reported it to the management that there is this lady with a bad attitude. I think being a newly established restaurant might have hired people rather quickly and they have not yet screened their employees for any attitude problems. Well for me I think we need to make the necessary changes that we need to do.

We didn't have very good service at Pizza Hut last time we went, even though it wasn't as busy as the time we went previous when we had really good service. The starters were slow to come and when she took them away i asked for a refil on my drink and she didn't bring one even when she brought the main meal. I think she forgot totally becuase i still didn't have it even after i'd finished the meal even though my glass had been empty the whole time. She then didn't take away my friends plate even when she asked us what puddings we wanted. We didn't bother leaving a tip becuase we thought the service wasn't good enough for one.

There is nothing worst than bad service. It doesn't matter how great the food is in most cases - if the service is horrible, that is enough for me to say "goodbye" forever. I've had similiar experience all over - and one of my first jobs was as a waitress at a sushi bar. It didn't matter if we were packed out I still delivered 120% great customer service - your customers depend on it! That is what their job is - it's what they are paid for. I'm a stickler for giving tips because I was there before - tips are what they live off of, however, if the service is horrible I have no problem not leaving one. It should be a message to the server.

If the food was great i will still go to the restaurant but i will make sure that i don't get that waitress or waiter again. I will also let the management know that there is a problem with their attitude.

Yes, I have had a similar experience myself. A few weeks ago, I was out to dinner with some friends of mine in a busy restaurant in the Bahamas, where I'm from. The host was nice but the waitress seemed to be always distracted and was very hard to catch once we were seated. Once the food came, which took very long at least 30 - 45mins, the waitress was gone again. We never got any eye contact and the attitude was one of uninterest. After the food was served, and everyone ate, by the way, the food was very good, it was another long wait for the bill. I had to manually get her attention even though she was serving other patrons in our general vicinty. Of course, the great debate was whether or not to leave a tip. You see in the Bahamas as in other countries, gratiuity is included in the bill. After much debate among me and my friends, we still decided to leave a tip hoping that the experience was the exception and not the rule for our "waitress".

You are really fussy, that woman probably works there part time doesn't really care about the job you or your kid, she just wants to get the job done and get paid, i don't see why your so bothered about a smile, your food was good i don't see your problem
