I had a phone call from my granddaughter a few minutes ago and she was at a friend house. She wanted to know if eggs would be good to eat if the expire date was in April. I told her I would not use them, and go and buy some fresh ones How long do you keep eggs after the expire date?

I've had eggs in my fridge for months before using them being we don't eat eggs that much. The cold water test is a sure-fire way to tell if they are bad or not. Floaters means they have a big air space and shouldn't be used mainly because most of the nutrients in them are already gone. Egg shells are porous which means they can also pick up other odors in the fridge and transfer them into the eggs inside.

I never heard about the cold water test, but I will now use it to check my eggs. Thanks for your response.

Well, the date on the eggs is not an expiration date, more of a suggested use by date. As long as the eggs have a firm yolk, they have been in the fridge and smell okay - then they are good to use. Non-refrigerated eggs can sit out for months before the go bad.
FYI: Eggs companies take in unsold eggs and wash them, then rebox them in a newly dated box.

Put the eggs in a bowl of cold water. If the eggs float, they are bad.

Thanks for the tip. Wonder if the eggs that expired in April will all float.

I would use eggs only few days past expiration. Cold water test is very good. I am very careful with eggs, because it is so easy to get food sickness....

I think the date on egss is a best before rather than a use by so you can keep them after the date has run out. To check if your eggs are still ok you should put them in a jug of cold water. If they sink to the bottom they are still fine, if they start to float part way or all the way they should be thrown away.

Well, I never had that happen to me before. We eat eggs a lot around here and I seem to want to bake a lot lately. That does use up our eggs faster but if I have to use the eggs after the expiration date, I usually go with the smell. If they smell bad, then it's too late to eat them but if they seem okay still, I'd use them.

hi! I even didn't know that the eggs have an expired date. well, I know that they don't last forever, but all the times I have bought eggs from the store I never have looked on the expired date and I am not sure, if there is an expires date at all on the eggs that I buy :) But in the most cases I keep them for a week or two before I eat them all!
