Hey Guys, I am having some thought about changing my home phone company..I would like some input from you...PLEASE! At the moment i have AT&T,and i also use them for my long distance..The problem is they are just so darn High...It seems they charge all kinds of charges and it is terrible to pay such a high phone bill each month.I have tried nearly all of their plans, and they are all high...I would use my cell phone and have the home phone taken out,but it seems cell phones do not work in my area,i have one but i have to leave home to use it...I have been hearing so much about "Vontage" have you heard of them? are they any good...? I have heard some bad things about them but if you have had any experience with them i would greatly appreciate your advice..They run off your high speed internet, and they say it is just 24.99 per month verses my At&t bill of 70.00 per month...Thanks so much.

I have AT&T too and they are high. I was recently talking about calling them and seeing what options I can drop to lower my bill. We have a different internet/cable provider. I have thought about switching my phone service to the internet/cable company too. I have heard that if your cable or internet goes out for any reason then you also loose your phone. Hopefully you will get some good answers here, we all need to save money when we can. With the high fuel prices everything is going up and up. My mom bought some corn on the cob today, it was $5 a dozen, thats an unheard of price, I hope its some good corn. Its always nice seeing you.

$5/dozen, that is really high. The highest we have seen here is 3 for $1 which isn't too bad. I have seen it as low as 4/$1 though.

Wow Polly that sounds good...That way i could get out of this contract i am in with cingular..It cost me 90.00 a month for these 2 cell phones, and they do not even work at my house,so i can only use them when i am out, which is good for an emerceny..If i had that prepay T-mobil i could really save and still have my cell in case i am on the road and need help. Thanks so much..I have got lots of great information here..You tell me about this great plan....and then this other lady told me about magicJack for my home phone....AWESOME

I have heard of vonage, but if you internet goes out, so does your phone.
I would stick with AT&T or - if they provide it - phone through your cable company. We use our cable company - Charter - and for $20/month we have unlimited long distance, VM, caller id, call waiting, and a bunch of other features. For the phone, internet and digital cable we pay $108/month including taxes.

You don't have the tv/phone/cellular/internet deal they have?
My mom has AT&T. She has her phone and internet through them, Cingular for her cell phone service and direct tv for her TV provider.

We have Shaw here, and that includes internet connection, digital phone, and digital TV. I was wondering whether you have a similar in your area. I know about Comcast, and Verizon who both offer phone service as well as internet connections. You might try them. And I do think AT & T offers all three services. That might help. I have heard of Vonage, but have not tried them.

Hi slickcut, I have not heard about that and want to drop by to learn from any members here, We have also AT&T this time and it's really expensive, I even ask my husband to just cancel our home phone to save since we do have CP and it works great! But, still our CellPhone plan with AT&T is quite expensive!

It not looking pretty on my side of the fence. My phone bill covers my calling which does include anywhere in Canada and my internet and I pay 110.00 each month. We just had a 4% raise hike. Everything goes up except the wages.

i'm using optus for my home phone and mobile phone provider here and their charges are quite reasonable i will say... my hubby had been with this provider for so long and he does not want to change as they are providing good services to us... i never heard of Vontage before... so i can't really tell you anything about it... all i can say is, if your provider charges you too much for your phone, you just have to find cheaper options... good luck and i hope other members here can help you to find a solution... take care and have a nice day...

Ellen, I get confused at all the things on the market too. I did look into Vonage online and didn't like what I saw after I read the information. You should check it out by doing a search but the website might just be Vonage.com
I got rid of my land line several years ago and switched to Alltel. It has been pretty good for me. My bill is about $90.00 a month for 2 phones, unlimited texting, unlimited pictures, free minutes starting at 7:00, the ability to talk to all Alltel customers for free, and 10 free "friends". (I have the cable company as one of my "friends" since I call them during the day and they always keep me on hold! LOL! - Not to mention the fact that I don't have very many friends)
You have gotten some good answers here. I recommend you sift through all of them and spend some time researching the ones that seem to be viable for you. I am wishing you a more reasonable phone bill!

Well i wanted to get a cheaper home phone because my home phone is so high..I have a big problem, you see my husbands mind is not right and i have to watch him like a child...I had planned on getting "magicjack" it is a thing you hook to your phone line and it gives you home phone service..It cost 39.00 for the little hook up and only $19.00 a year and you get free phone service through your phone using your high speed, internet, its sorta like Vonage, but supposs to be better .. well my husband heard me talking about it,so what does he do?....He goes into his room gets on the computer and orders 3 of these things, and i got one through the mail...but he ordered 2 more by some odd name and address and they sent it too before i could stop the order....I doubt that i get it since it is in someone elses name..Hopefully a person will not keep it and send it back to the company...The thing is my husband has a debit card and he put in the number,so i have like a $139.00 charge on the debit card...My husband is sick and he is disabled and i have to watch him real good..He has trouble seeing and his mind is bad, early allztimers im afraid...I really have my hands full with him...Anyway i do hope it all works out..I have never faced this problem before and i have problems handling him......

We have had vonage for about 1 1/2 years now and I can't say anything bad about the service other then my husband using all of the extras. I am at home and he has the calls forwarded to his cell phone. So, I sit and wait for a call that he gets.....Men!
Seriously, it runs off the broadband and that has gone down for less then 6 hours in that time frame and we always have out cell phones so it is not a major concern.
For the 25 a month they charge, they are definitely on my list of a best bang for your buck!

I think the word you're looking for is Vonage and it does phone service through the internet. My brother uses it for long distance to his wife and child in the U.S. and I don't know if it works just like the other phone companies. Phone companies have had it really good for a long time and it's about time they give up their stranglehold on the people. Cheers!!

I'm looking at the same thing. My problem is I only have 2 options due to being in an apartment complex. THey only allowed the two to cable the place. Oh well.
But Ihave heard of VOnage too.. you plug your phone into you PC. Your phone is "on" and usable as long as you PC is on. Turn you PC off and you have no phone access. $24.99 a month is nice, but I can get that through my local carrier Verizon. I don't leave my PC on 24/7. I always turn it off a night. Granted I do have a cell phone that I could have acess to at night, but still, if htere is an emergecny and you call 911, they can track your call if you pass out or something like that, they can cross ref your phone number with your house address and still come help you. If your call is through your PC, they can't find you.
I to, have the problem that my cell doesn't work in my apt. I have to step out on the patio to get reception or connection - I am first flor of a three story apartment complex. Guess the satalights can't find me way down there! So no landline and only cell, is not realy an option for me.
So to cut things down, my bundle service is phone, cable and internet. $113 a month for all three - $35 each - dollar a day each. Not to bad, but I am seriously thinking of cancelling my cable. IF I could just get local channels I'd be happy enough. I'd miss Food Network and HGTV and History Channel and things like that, but ain't life tough. And if I absoltuely need it back, I can do that.
Keep us updated on what you do so we all can learn!

We considered that but we have cordless phones for a reason, so that we can wander around and do things while we talk.
Vonage does not need the PC running, once your modem is up and running and your Vonage box is going you can power down the PC. Once my network is up, I often turn the computer off.

We got rid of our landline and just use our cell phones. We did look into Vontage but in the end decided that we really didn't need anything besides the three cell phones that are already in the house. We live in the country and the only cell phone that works out here is Alltel so that is what we have.Good luck on figuring something out!

vonage is ok but like you already know you must have high speed internet before you can have it working. comcast is good. they offer the triple play where you can get phone, internet and cable all for $99. but if that is still too much then vonage is safe, i personally dont have it but my mom does and she has been with them fr about 6 months now and has never said anything bad about them.
