how many trolls do you think are on here?

I am thinking, or at least hoping that there are more nice people than mean people here. But I can definitely relate to this discussion. Since I have experienced this recently. I agree, unless a person is being really abusive or going against the rules, there is no reason to minue them or ! them. I've never used either of those. I actually give plusses to pretty much everyone I reply to, and a good amount of time I give plusses to responses I read. I go by how good they express their opinions and even if I don't agree, if someone makes me think I am definitely going to give them a plus. Otherwise, I don't do anything and I go on my way. Anyway, I am pretty much over my rating loss, for the most part, sure.. it bugs me because I am pretty sure it's a troll, just because I have been here almost 2 weeks, and my rating was rising really fast, and the whole time I have been pretty open about my opinions. So I am trying not to take it too personally. I do expect different opinions here, but it would be nice if those people replied with why they disagreed, instead of taking the easy way out and minusing! I really do think that 99% of people here are good. So I will just stick by my friends and the haters really don't matter.

If I believed all the hype about the power of the "trolls" around here, I'd be quaking in my boots. But if a person carefully reads the MyLot terms of service they can easily see that such "troll" behavior is in fact easy recognized by the MyLot system and defeated. The TOS clearly states that rating a quality discussion or quality response as negative will only backfire on the person doing it. This protection was implemented by MyLot after the "troll" issue came to bear awhile back. And while it might seem that many people are being trolled, take into account that some people don't even know they are doing wrong. Some people simply harbor ill opinions about others and consider it to be a normal thing. They don't realize that they are being offensive. Maybe it's the way they were raised or brought up. So rating such a person negative would be within TOS, but the person receiving the negative rating would simply assume they had been attacked by the star trolls. As for me, I don't use either the - or ! symbols. Most times, discussions that are offensive are deleted by others or caught by board moderators. Differences in opinions don't scare me. So, I don't fear to post my honest but tactful opinion. Outright rudeness and mean behavior, flaming, bad mouthing, generic discussions started to "call out" another member are all acts that can get members banned. Think before you speak. That's my motto. I'm happy to hear that you are not afraid to speak your mind or view other differing opinions. Other members could learn much from your example! Thank you for your insightful discussion. Be well. i don't know how many trolls we have actually here at mylot... i guess i am lucky enough as well as i never been attacked by the trolls yet so far... hopefully never will... i just try to be a good person here and make friends with everybody... and i don't think what the trolls are doing is right... they are already hurting so many good users here until they leave the site and don't want to come back here again ever... take care and have a nice day...

There luckily are more good people than bad people on mylot but more trolls are adding and that's something that worries me. About 2 years ago I didn't even use the term troll because there was little trolling around here. Today I responded to a troll discussion and got a pretty mean response which I've decided not to read because it would just piss me off. I did feel it was a good thing to respond because I am reporting this guy and don't like to be sneaky about it. It's only fair if they know who did it and why and mylot will be able to see that I did so too.

Trolls in any sense of the word, on any website, tend to be mostly in the minority, at least if it's at least reasonably moderated. They just tend to be rather loud, and therefore sound like there's more of them than there are. I wouldn't worry too much on here; If someone's going round giving nothing but bad ratings to stuff, I believe the system compensates by lowering the worth of their opinion in the figures.

Since I post and reply to mostly controversial topics, I have encountered trolls quite frequently. I don't care too much about my rating. It does bother me that they disrupt the discussion. I have no problem with people who disagree, but to post idiocy is disruptive and it takes away from the dialogue. That sort of thing harms the entire site.

I think i have been already attacked by them few months back i lost my reputation a big time. it was down from 97/100 to 64/100.its raelly bad. i think there can't be one. for which reason those sick people rate us negative I do not know as its beyond my imagination. i believe soem are there.

I love your topic! You are absolutely right. We don't have to please everybody. Just because we have different opinions doesn't mean it would degrade our own individuality. There's no such thing as right and wrong opinion . I think it all lies on how we perceive things. Ratings are not tat important as long as you know how to express what's on your mind. They say to argue with a fool means there are two. so if somebody is starting to irritate you just because they don't like what you say then just ignore him or her, but thank them because even though they you're very different at least they ave the guts to spend their time with you.

I just had a couple on a topic I started on gay marriage. Mylot got rid of them and that was the end of it. They seem to be drawn more toward the controversial subjects but I have seen them on some very innocent ones as well. I got accused of being one on some topic simply because my opinion didn't agree with hers. Apparently her star had been going down and she just assumed it was me. My different opinion was in no way rude or anything. Still it's not a nice thing to be accused of. I doubt anyone thinks your a troll. These guys stand out.

moonlitmagikchild I dont think there are really very many'but somehow the few sure do do some mean damage to anyone whose star ten or nine offends them in some way. in two days I was trolled down to a six, then I got up to seven now am 8 and at 8000 some posts am staying there. I did not deserve to be minused but was done so, and others were too at the same time.

It could be half of the myLot's population. I know, that I have ran into a quite a bit since being here.. So, I know that we have them.

There are trolls at every site like this. They get their kicks trying to make others look bad and themselves look good. They are to be pitied. But they don't worry me one bit. If I get rated downward, what difference does it make?

one of the good things I've observed here on mylot is that most people posting here are courteous, and civil. they're nice, friendly, open-minded and knowledgeable. I haven't met trolls here as I have on other forums sites. ...I try hard to reply to as many discussion forums as possible. So, my friends would also reply on mine too... It's not really the ratings, that makes me feel bad if ever I don't recieve any replies... It's the dissapointed that i didn't get to talk about that topic, I thought was really good. And I good debate is never bad in any forum discussion, its what makes the topic good- when opposing opinions are recognized. And by the way, it's all in a friendly manner and exchanging of ideas. ^^,

Hello moonlitmagikchild, I think there are few trolls here in mylot. I have not seen anyone yet but I do see heated argument on some discussions and they are a breeding ground for trolls. If I disagree with someone opinions I don't give him/her a negative ratings because of the opinions. These is a discussions sites, so everybody is entitled to his/her opinions whatever that is. I don't usually give negative ratings. I usually a give a plus ratings. If someone is rude an abusive rating is better to give that a negative ratings.

Well this is an odd topic. I haven't had any problems with having what you call trolls that just rate my discussions or what not. Keep track of your discussions hoping they get responded back to. Don't mind the ratings, just hope you don't get trolls that flame war or insult. There's tons of resources to look at to find out what discussions attract people, also easier for people to find according to their interests leaving tags. So no I don't fear your term of trolls and it doesn't bug me at all.

I don't think I've encountered trolls on myLot YET - but another site I go to has certain members who never suggest topics or comment on topics but show their faces purely to insult and vilify people they've taken a dislike to. I haven't been on myLot long enough to notice people like that, but there must be those who give negative ratings if someone disagrees with them. I respect people having different opinions, and wouldn't rate them negatively for that, as it would be boring if we all just agreed with eachother - but I would give a negative rating if someone was insulting, personal or abusive. I don't fear trolls - there's nothing to fear from cowards who are hiding behind anonymity - but it's a shame they might prevent people saying what they really feel or being honest in their opinions.

Yup, you're right. We all have our own opinions, so I think it's rather close-minded to rate someone's response as negative, just bcos they don't agree with me. Some mylotters seem apologetic - I think these are nice people, who do not want to offend. It could be they are discussing a sensitive issue, and they won't want anyone to get worked up over their opinions.
