A Sight I Thought I'd Never See...

A little over a week ago, my hubby and I went out for a little while. It was a Friday night and we just didn't want to be stuck in the house so, we went out with no particular desitination. So, we were leaving the new open air mall that was pretty recently opened up in my area. We were checking on progress of the mall and, as we were leaving it, there was a tornado about a mile and a half or 2 miles in front of us. In fact, by our guesstimates, it was likely pretty close to our house. The hubby saw it form and I saw it mostly formed, getting bigger, speeding up, twisiting and moving to the left then just as suddenly as it was there, it fell apart and was gone. But, make no mistake about it. It was a tornado, it was huge, it moved unbelievably quick and if it was bigger and lasted longer, it would have caused severe damage.
It is a sight I will never forget.
Has anyone else ever seen a tornado with their own eyes and that close?

I have, I grew up in tornado alley (Oklahoma) and when I was a kid we saw one come right for our house, it skipped over a field and tore the shed roof off, we waited for the roof to slam into our house but it landed in the field behind us. It was pretty scary because even though we were in our house we still didn't feel safe.

That's what happened in the description in my response below this one. Also at the end of this page is a discussion I started about my chasing a tornado late May this year.

Wow! That must have been terrifying. And, having seen the end result of a tornado and what it can do to a house from footage on the news after tornadoes hit, I can understand why you wouldn't feel safe even though you were in your house. You were lucky that roof missed your house! I'm glad you survived it!

Good thing it fell apart and didn't destruct a thing. I haven't experienced a tornado in my life. I've only really seen it in movies.

LOL! I agree! I think that the conditions weren't just right enough for it to sustain itself. So, I am really glad for that because, even as big as it got while it was around, was really terrifying. And, I am glad for you that you haven't experienced a tornado. I hope you continue to only see them on TV. Although, it was a sight to behold. Fascinating and terrifying.

I have seen one already in action, it was a F1, according to todays standards. I will never forget it either. I was in my living room with my parents and siblings. I was sitting on the couch with my mom and sister, my dad was with my brother's. My sister was crying badly because she was scared. I didn't think nothing of it, because we have bad storms in the past. Well, it showed it's ugly face, with a flash of lightening. By the grace of God it was heading away from our house, so it probably started there. It was near the road heading towards a field of cattle, luckily wasn't in that spot at the time. It didn't sound like a train, it did hail, and got very still outside before it happened. It was very scarey looking, again something I will never forget.
Another sight I would never see again, was during another storm. My dad was at work, and my oldest brother was mad about something. My mom kept telling him to hush, that he was making God angry. Well, my brother bad mouthed God, right then and there, a volt of lightening hit outside, and it was so bright, or it arched. I don't know what it did, it looked like it came into the living room and stopped at my brother's feet. My brother got scared and he never bad mouthed God again.

I do have respect for mother nature. I watch those storm chasers on tv and sometimes they make me so mad. They get so excited over wanting to see a tornado, then feel so bad for the damage it leaves behind. Those things hardly ever touch down without leaving damage. My aunt lost her home along with her inlaws home, her son was badly injured, along with her mil passing away from a heart attack as she was being swept away during it.
Lightening doesn't bug me as much as long as it doesn't come near the ground. I have seen a lot of them touch down near a tower, close by in our neighborhood. I don't like the lightening that flashes, like someone took a picture.
The saying that the sky turns green right before a tornado, isn't always true. I have seen a green sky, and we didn't even get a rain drop.

That must have been terrifying! I am glad it didn't hurt you and your family at all! And, I would most definitely not bad mouth God. Your brother is lucky he didn't get worse! LOL!
But, I am guessing that that gave you a pretty healthy respect for Mother Nature's power. She can be quiet fiesty!
The night my hubby and I saw the tornado, the lightening was horrendous too. It was truly terrifying. There was one strike that I think must have been 8 to 10 different lightening bolts across the sky in front of us while we were at a stop sign. We actually hesitated to see if we could see anywhere even one of those bolts might have hit. It scared the you know what out of us both!

hi cortjo love your avatar.yes I was raised in tornado alley, S.D. and I and my mom , I was just about eleven then, watched three tornadoes moving in a row, mom, dad and a baby one, about one quarter mile away but movine parallel to us. they hit several farms and demolished houses and barns then just split apart and were gone . they do move very fast and we would have been in our storm cellar but they were not coming in our direction thank goodness. this was many years ago but I never ever forgot the sight.

Hello Hatley! Thank you!
And, wow! That must have been so terrifying for you! One was scary enough and, it didn't get violent or stick around long enough to do any damage. I can't imagine the sight of 3 and seeing it do damage! But, I can imagine how unforgettable it was. And, it probably gave you a larger sense of respect for Mother Nature at such a young age!

No, I guess because I don't live in a tornado area but I've seen hurricanes in the news clippings also because hurricanes never seem to hit Trinidad.
It must be an impressive sight and if you've seen the damage they do a frightening one as well.
I can only imagine how you guys feel about these things.

Count yourself lucky that you don't live in a tornado area. LOL! Even though it didn't get big enough to do any damage and was gone almost as quick as it was there, it was still huge and very frightening. But, admittedly, it was sort of cool! LOL! However, if it had caused damage, it would have gone from cool to devastating so, that is some shaky ground. LOL!

Hello tamarafireheart!
I hear ya! It was pretty frightening but, at the same time, fascinating. And, while I am ok with thunder and lightening, we get a lot of high winds during our storms in my area and, it is the wind that terrifies me because it alone, without a tornado, can cause a lot of destruction too.
But, I am glad that you haven't seen a tornado given how frightened of it all you are! I hope you never do see one!

Hi cortjo73,
Thank you so much for that, no I don't like high winds either we do have them now and again which has killed so many people and uprooting trees. Our weather is changeing because of climate change, we also had earth tremors.
Thanks
Tamarafireheart.

It really was exciting! It was terrifying because until it just dissipated, we didn't know how big it was going to get and, until my hubby told me it was probably about a mile and a half or 2 miles from us, I thought it was much closer. And Thank You! I am glad nothing happened to my hubby and I, or anyone else!
You take care too and have a great day!

We had one go up and down from the clouds very near my home a few years ago. I lost a few large branches from my red Maple and the neighbor had a 50 foot pine tree pulled up from the sopil about 2 feet slightly damaging his roof. All told for a 4 mile stretch from my house and South there were over 1,000 trees ripped from the ground due to this tornado and straight line winds later. I've seen a few from very close in my lifetime actually. I have a discussion or two about a recent one that hit a few miles from my home May 25th I think as well.

Yikes! I couldn't live where you live. We get threats several times every year in my area and, that is bad enough. And, we did have a wind so bad, which we aren't even sure it may not have been a mini twister, that knocked a tree down in my backyard and hit my house. It was a huge oak tree and, we were fortunate because the way the tree hit the house at first actually broke a branch and knocked the tree away a little. It still did some damage to my house but, if that branch hadn't broken and knocked it away from my house a little, it might have crashed into my bedroom decapitating my hubby and I as we slept in our bed. It happened 7 years ago on Mother's Day. No one knows if it was a mini twister or just a really bad wind gust but, we were not the only ones in my subdivision that day with tree damage to our house from that wind.
I'll be looking for that discussion about the tornado in your area and the one you chased. And, I am glad that you have stayed safe!

OMG--- I would have been so afraid! No I have never seen anything like that- I’m from NY though. We deal with ice storms and blizzards. An occasional tornado.
I’m really glad that it did not touch down at your house- and went fast. I imagine it was pretty neat to watch but scary too!

I was pretty scared! LOL! I didn't really know where exactly it was and if it was going to come our way.
My hubby is from NY too so, he has never gotten used to the fear of Tornadoes here in all of the more than a decade that we have been here. And, being from Ohio, I am also very familiar with blizzards and ice storms but, we would also get a few threats a year from tornadoes in Ohio so, I have sort of always known a little of that fear. Not as much as happens in Georgia but, still, enough that I wasn't practically new to that fear.
And, thank you! I'm glad that it didn't touch down at my house too! And, it was really cool but, very scary! LOL!

Never that close. I've seen them far away at least once as a kid. I have had a couple of odd encounters around them though.
I was at a friend's house on the other side of our neighborhood when we heard the tornado warnings. The wind had started picking up and it was getting dark. I hopped on my bike and headed home. Halfway there the wind picked up so hard that I literally took my feet off my pedals and let the wind push me! When I made it home my friends called me to make sure I made it ok. They said they saw a twister land not too far in front of me (I'm guessing a few miles).
The other encounter was when I was at a 2-month summer camp. The girls were visiting the boys on their side of camp (a few miles away), when the tornado warnings started. Toward the late afternoon we saw a huge black (and I mean BLACK) line of clouds literally rolling across the sky. It looked like black waves heading in to crash on a beach. They had us in buildings for a while and then decided to put us in the lowest spot on the campus - a little sloped area by the lake called "The Cup". They made us lay down on towels for what seemed forever. But the cool thing was I looked at the lake and it was this beautiful mixture of blues and greens and sitting near the shore were three white swans. It was a very neat picture! Too bad I didn't have a camera at the time.

I'm glad you weren't hurt by it. But, wasn't it a sight to behold? And, I bet you will never forget how rapidly it formed and moved. It really gives you respect for their power when you see one and how quickly they form and then how rapidly they move.

wow, i am fascinated by tornadoes at a safe distance of course. i have videos of them. the closest i've come to seeing one was a dust devil that formed in front of my eyes and spun a little, then dissolved. i would love to see a tornado in person. without no one getting hurt or property damage.

I have to admit...it was cool! LOL! Scary as heck and, if it got any closer, I might have had to change my shorts but, it was cool nonetheless! LOL! And, of course, I think the thing that kept it at cool instead of traumatizing was the fact that it didn't do any damage. So, I completely know where you are coming from. They are fascinating. They are a crazy, terrifying, but fascinating act of nature and, they can make a person very curious.

I have never seen a tornado and I tell you, I would never ever want to see one. I have seen the movie and it is scary. Forces of nature are scary and a flood is scary too. I once ventured to cross a bridge which was overflown with flood waters. There was a big payloader near by and I decided to chance crossing the bridge which could no longer be seen. Inching across the bridge, the water was almost at the floorboards of my van and I could feel the van being carried somewhat gently but our wheels still touched the bottom and we made it safely across. If the water were a little higher we would have been swept away.

Wow! That is pretty terrifying. And, you are lucky that the waters weren't high enough to carry you away. I have seen that happen on the news. People think they can cross because they don't think that the water is deep enough but, it turns out to be deeper than they think and, they are carried away. You were really lucky! I'm glad you were safe.

I did see one pretty close years ago in Michigan. My (then) hubby and I were traveling down the road and saw it up ahead of us in the distance. It appeared to be coming at us on the same road, and as he tried to figure out where to drive to try to get out of its path, it lifted back up in the sky, then darted off in another direction. We just sat at the side of the road, stunned.

Ugh! I bet that was a terrifying site. The one we saw was moving off to our left, its right, right so, it wasn't coming directly at us but, like yours did, it could have switched paths as they are unpredictable. I was just relieved when it dissipated. LOL! I am glad you weren't hurt and that it did change paths.

I have never seen one that close.I'm sure that must have been terrifing.I have seen them on the water, which they are referred to (and I'm sure everyone know this) as waterspouts which can move to land. Yes tornadoes are very scary. I grew up in Missouri and we would have them there, not a lot but I remember as a kid hearing the warnings over the t.v. and we all went to the basement til it was over. I have always been a little interested in them. When there has been a tornado watch alert then it changes to a warning and you are outside and see the sky turn from a grey to green in color. It is fascinating but scary.

I have seen a waterspout too. Those are pretty cool too! And, that green sky is really terrifying. Then comes the hail! Right about then I always get that "heart in the pit of your stomach" feeling. LOL!
But, yes...it is most definitely fascinating but scary. LOL!
