Yesterday I was watching Oprah. She had Jessica Seinfeld on as her guest. Jessica had been have trouble getting her kids to eat vegetables and got tired of the dinner time whining . She came up with a good way to get vegetables into her kids diets that seems very logical to me. She steams the vegetable to tender crisp then purees them. She than hide them in the foods that are a similar color such as mashed potatoes and cauliflower. She then serves a small bit of the vegetable on the side. She has put vegetables in just about every thing from the mac & cheese with cauliflower puree to chocolate brownies with spinach and carrots. The chicken nuggets with broccoli or spinach or sweet potato or beet puree. I have a 19 year old that will only eat spinach and green beans maybe carrots once in a while so I'm going to see what i can do with these ideas. Jessica Seinfeld has a cook book out called Deceptively Delicious. You can see her recipes at http://www2.oprah.com/foodhome/food/jseinfeld/recipes/jseinfeld_recipes_main.jhtml?promocode=HP23

Hiding vegetables in other foods is an old tactic that many moms have learned to do. I personally make a spaghetti sauce that has a lot of vegetables in it. The kids never knew that there were other types of spaghetti sauce until they got older. Then I was found out. LOL

I tried to hide veggies in the spaghetti sauce but my grandson spotted them right away. He doesn't refuse to eat it but he does complain about it. I had never thought about hiding veggies in foods the way that Jesica Seinfeld does.

In fact my son is very picky to food. He likes meats but never enjoys vegetables and fruits. He didn't eat these in the past. I bought him a funny story book about the healthy diet. He likes reading it because it has photos and it suits his age. So we always mention healthy diet in front of him all the time. We tell him that healthy diet means eating everything, including vegetables and fruits. Later he added one more, including biscuits. I say he is right. So after some efforts, finally he is willing to eat a few vegetables and fruits when it's impossible for him to touch them in the past. I hope after time goes by, he will enjoy eating them all by himself. I love China

We have to do what we can to get them to eat their veggies and if a story book helps to get him to choose them himself so much the better.

I think most children are reasonable. I hope the story books will help them to understand it much more

I saw the show too. I thought I had seen part of it before, so I was excited to be able to watch the whole segment. Long ago, I met a woman who did something similar every time she made her own spaghetti sauce. She put pureed carrots and spinach and beets in her sauce. Everyone loved her pasta sauce! Her kids wanted spaghetti twice a week, and after she started making her own whole wheat pasta, she was happy to comply. I do think I'll get that book. My hubby won't try lots of veggies that would be good for him. Maybe I can hide them :-)

my daughter loves veggies its the fruits i have a hard time getting her to eat. i tried to get her use to eatting veggies when she was younger and gave her fruit as well but she took to the veggies more. instead of wanting apple sauce or strawberry banana, she goes for the sweet potatoes. although the weird thing is, she will eat her fruits at her grandmothers house, but not her veggies. i think it might be the whole spoiling thing but at least i know she is getting all that she needs.

Well it's good that she does eat her veggies. Maybe it's the way that her grandma fixes her veggies. My folks used to cook the life out of them so the green ones were a very ugly color.

you could always just go old school and make the kids eat veggies before they leave the table or eat dessert. Thats what my mom did when I was a kid. Of course, she still doesn't know that I used to feed the brussel sprouts to the family dog under the table! But now as an adult, I don't have a home cooked meal without some sort of veggie in it so I guess being forced as a child to eat them worked.

Jessica's idea is to get away from the fighting to get the kids to eat the veggies by introducing the flavors in a new way.

That's an excellent idea incorporating the veggies into other foods. Some of those ideas I would have never thought to have put together...like the cauliflower puree into chocolate brownies. Cauliflower, pureed and added to mashed potatoes sounds like it might be a good combo, I think I'd like to try that. Thanks for the link, there's a lot of good ideas there!

I liked what she did with the chicken nuggets as well. And flax seed id goof for arthritis as well. They can replace the fish oils for omega 3s.

I have watched that show a couple of times too. That is a brilliant idea! I have a 4 yr old who won't eat any veggies lately. I am going to buy that book, I hope the recipes are good!

If anyone wants that his child gets green vegetables, their parents must accompany them at dining table in eating green vegetables. Green vegetables not only provide good health but also cleans our mind from intoxicants.

Not all kinds will eat what their parents even when they are all setting at the table and eating the green vegetables. I have a granddaughter that would only eat certain green lettuces because every other vegetable would kill her.
