If You Had A Choice - Would You Still Go Out To Work?

I for one have really enjoyed the last few days at home and out in the garden digging up slabs and putting turf down and could probably spend time decorating and doing other things but I know even if I didn't have to go to work I still would work in some way, perhaps voluntary work of some sort. What about you could you grow accustomed to not working and being pampered or doing what you want when you want to do it? I know I would get bored if I didn't work in some way.

You could be describing me Ellie. I haven't been employed since last November, not at work since May before that. Once I made the decision to leave work a huge weight lifted of my shoulders. That said, I do need to do something (other than myLot). That's why I'm volunteering down at the Cathedral. I suspect that people will think that I am lazy. Although when I did ask the question on myLot people were very kind. I do know that whatever may happen, I don't want to return to full-time work. I like the freedom that being at home brings. I had worked solidly for 33 years, I don't feel that I've been a skiver all my life. Just now!

Hi I also don't work fulltime and feel that I have got the balance right between home and work but if I didn't work at all I would do something like you in the voluntary section. I was one of the people in your discussion at the time that said that you had worked hard all your life and if you want to relax back now thats fine you deserve to. You used a key word here FREEDOM, that is something everyone yearns for and you now have, well done you. I'm still obligated to go in when someone elses says so rather than when I want to. Ellie :D

I hope that you are not typing in the bath Ellie! Don't want those circuits blown. I have had lots of breaks. Have been to Waitrose and to enquire about chicken sheds and runs. Blooming expensive! I'm game for a pint with Scoop anytime. But he's up north I think. Maybe we should all have an away weekend in the Cotswolds or something.

I don't work my friend, but I never get bored. If I feel myself starting to get a bit down or fed up, I'll get out for a walk, or a bus ride somewhere. A change of scenery always helps, and as you know, I love to be at one with nature. It was great when I lived in Brighton, as I was half an hour's walk from the beach. Quite often, I'd start the day off by going down at about 8.30 a.m. when there was nobody around, and I'd walk along the beach, take a cup of tea and a bit in a pavement cafe at the top of the beach, and then stroll around the pier, or sit on the pier and take the sun for a while.
Now I'm in the countryside, I like it equally as much. I can go up onto the South Downs and let the wind blow through my hair, or I can walk out to the millponds and be at one with nature. If I want to take a bus, it stops right outside my place, and I can go off to pastures new. I never get bored!
Brightest Blessings, my dear friend. xxx

Yes, I do believe you have, although I don't know how you manage it. Still, I used to do it at one time... time to enjoy what's out there now the kids have grown. You're doing a great job my friend. You have a nice home and a close-knit little family, whom you've supported well.

Hi Darkwing, I understand completely about you going and being at one with nature and jumping on the bus and taking yourself off somewhere and I know that you are such a busy person you don't have the time to get bored. I don't like the fact that I have to work, I would rather be able to choose as and when I do but we can't have it all and right now I suppose I have got the balance right between home and work and being mum eh! Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi Gabs, I suppose because you can't work now you want to more, I bet once you were back there you would probably want more free time. I am pleased to hear that you did enjoy your job though being happy in your work is really important I think. Thanks for sharing. I hope you are feeling much better now. Have you attempted to drive again? I would wait until 6 weeks is up really even though I know it can be tempting when the car is sat outside eh! Ellie :D

Hi Che, Yes being your own boss has an amount of freedom with it where you can do what you want when you want and not working at all you get bored and then working for someone else is frustrating as no free time. I think it is all about getting the balance right really eh! Thank you so much for sharing and I am pleased that you have found myLot to keep you occupied LOL. You have a lovely day too. Ellie :D

Hi ellie,
How are finding this layou? I have just got used to it. My disablity is nothing compare to what others have go through, I was working three diffrent jobs in one day five days a week sometimes I had to go in Saterdays, then back kept playing up so the doctor sign me off. To cut a long story short. I've got cronic back pains blind in my right eye and deaf in my right ear and my doc had put off work permimently, apart from that I'm alright.
Love Hugles

oh yes... even though i have a rich husband, i think i will still want to go to work... i can't stand staying at home everyday doing nothing... that will really kill me... i already get used in being active and always doing something... so i can't imagine myself not doing anything... i will be really bored and stressed out... take care and have a nice day...

I would because I love what I'm doing at the moment, I just wouldn"t have to put so much time in if money wasn"t a problem.
I'd spend more time on my hoobies and other things.

I will go out to work. But preferable a flexible job. Is there any such flexible job which i can go to work anytime as long as i finished my work to introduce to me?
Work may bring us some social life, we need some social life no wonder how bored is the person we are. It's important for us to have a contact with the world outside.
I work becuase of money, even my husband can afford me, I will still work cause I do not want to leave behind from this world.

I was happy to be able to stay at home to bring up the children - but I also enjoyed working in a newspaper office when they were high school age. I'd forgotten how good it was to have some adult conversation and feel like part of the community again! Having said that, I'm happy to be back to being a housewife now - and I'm getting lazier by the minute!

I think for me just something partime would be great as it would get me out meeting people and being Ellie rather than mum all the time but as I get older I love being at home as much as possible and even though I enjoy my job don't like being obligated to go in but financial needs have to be met right now. Hey there ellie333, I agree that without work it can be quite depressing. That is why most people go to work. Speaking of work, I wish there is some way to work at home and still be earning as much as working outside. At home, in my opinion, we get to be comfortable and have more control than working outside. If I have that option, then maybe I don;t have to go out and work. :D

I would like to not have to work - but thats never going to happen - and have the choice. I would do a job of sorts but would be able to do something for enjoyment rather than to pay the bills. I would like to be comfortable enough to be able to stay at home and raise children until they go to school.

good question and one that has been raised in our office lately.
I could do without work, if I had money enough to enjoy life still. Dont mean filthy rich, but just enough to do the things I like to do. I dont mind being unproductive...
On the other hand I would miss the social circle, mental challange and yes, routine that comes along with a job.
Maybe it would be nice to work 2 days a week and have it both!

Hi I guess I must have the best of both worlds already then as I do work just two days a week but it is very hard graft and would like something a bit less physically tiring but agree I love the social aspect of working. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Ellie :D

Well! if i quit my job and start working part time or having fun that wouldn't earn me that much.. Im from a middle class family.. which requires money to keep going... Maybe if i was rich i would not have to go out for work... But then you got to work someway or the other just to not get bored... sorry for my english

Hi yes a balance between the two would be good if affordable. I like the idea of working from home and being my own boss so it would give more felexible hours but right now I go out to work. Its all about getting the balance right really. I would be bored if I didn't work at all. Ellie :D

Hello ellie333,
I will get bored if I don't work. If you just sit around watching tv, playing games and just eating. You will bet bored after sometimes. I need some kind of variety of activities so I don't get bored doing the same thing over and over again. Work is a good outlet for us to do something and a good feeling of accomplishing something. It makes you feel important and worthwhile. If I just sit around and getting pampered all the time. It seems there is nothing to it. Even millionaire and old people still work, so why don't you. It's good to celebrate when you at least accomplish something you worked on. It's also a good thing to get lazy once in a while.

Hi Robert, I do work but is is also good to get lazy and relax once in a while too. I also feel I would get bored if I didn't do something. It is also sociable to work as you get to meet people you wouldn't meet if you stayed at home all the time. Ellie :D

No, I like to work at home which will give me more comfort I like!
When I finish working ,I could eat what I want and enjoy what I can do!
The best thing of working in home is I could get the freedom I could get!

I suppose if I was extremely wealthy and didn't need the income I'd find other pasttimes or volunteer work to keep me busy. Right now I'd love to be working, but I'm not and can't. I had been working parttime but lost my job the end of May. Just as well. I still hope to find something I can do from my computer from home. One of those many web sites referred me to myLot. And while I find it fun, I don't find it pays much. LOL

Hi Tess oh I am sorry that you have lost your job. It would be great to work from home I agree as it gives a certain freedom. I have been doing paid surveys and do free quizzes also and get a bit extra in that way but like you say it is not enough. Good luck in your search. Ellie :D

I would work on cars. I love to work on cars, and while I do work on cars everyday for real work, I would probably get me an old car and fix it up. I wouldnt be doing the work for other people it would be for me. I dont think I could sit there and do nothing all day. I would get up with the house and yard. I am so far behind in those because I have to work all day.
