Do you have a dog that is scared of thunderstorms?

Hi, We had some really noisy thunderstorms go thru the area last night. Lots of rain and thunder that seemed to go on for hours. All of my dogs are pretty much okay with storms except my light colored schnauzer. Rocky will shake and beg to be held while the thunder is rumbling. All I can do is hold him and tell him everything is okay. I don't think he believe me tho because he still trembles with fear. Then, when the storm is over, it's rough to get him to go outside to do his job. Poor thing!! Do any of you have a dog or dogs that have problems with storms? Char :-)

I have a female French Mastiff/ Dogue de Bordeaux that weighs 120 pounds and is just terrified of thunderstorms.. even when it starts to rain she becomes nervous... she will pant like crazy and follow me from room to room.. and sometimes she will even try to hide behind the recliner... I feel sorry for her, although when it is just raining it is kind of funny, bc she is such a big dog and is scared of a little rain!.. she is very sweet.. and we only just recently adopted her a few months ago from a kennel, so I am not sure exactly if she had some kind of thunderstorm related trauma when she was a pup or not... if you do find out any ways to help calm them down during the thunderstorms then please pass it on to me!! bd as i mentioned before she weighs 120 lbs and sometimes during particularly loud thunder it will scare her and she will run and knock over whatever is in her way including end tables, chairs, etc.

Thanks for your response! Isn't it funny how some of the larger dogs are the biggest babies? It sounds like your big baby might be a little destructive when a big boom hits..Poor baby! I haven't really found anything but trying to calm them down, hold them, pet them, talk to them and really that only helps me to think I'm helping them. lol I don't like to give meds to them to calm them down because it makes them so drunklike. I guess we'll just have to live with it. lol Have a great day! Char

We currently have two chihuahuas and one cat,and while the chihuahuas are afraid of most everything, even their shadows,or at least one of them is,they seem to be afraid of really bad thunderstorms, whereas the cat goes about her business as if nothing is going on,and she always has,it is almost as if she does not know,or does not care, that we are having a thunderstorm.

Thanks for your response. I think chihuahuas are really cute! Did you know there is a new movie coming out in I think September that has tons of chihuahuas in it? It's called Beverly Hills Chihuahuah. I've seen the trailers and it is absolutely adorable and the theme song really sticks in your mind Have a great day, Char

My dog is not really scared of thundrstorms. He is pretty mellow as far as that goes. He will sometimes get scared if the thunder is extremely loud, but iif it is just an average storm it doesnt bother him. THe cat is afraid of loud noises but it is more like fireworks that bother him and not thundertorms.

Char,Wow, can I relate! We too had thunderstorms the night before last, and my lab/pitbull, Roxy, has always been very afraid of storms, and also fireworks! The forth of July was also a lot of fun. I have pills to give her, but I don't like giving them to her because she gets very wobbly, she acts like she's incredibly drunk and has a hard time navigating the stairs and jumping up on my bed. (not that she's spoiled or anything). I also bought her some ear plugs, but they don't really do much good because animals can "feel" and smell the storm long before it's close to home. Do you have any suggestions that I have missed? Sue (with...thehourglass)

Hehe,,,,my dog is very scared of thunderstorms,When it comes, they will hide themselves in a gap that we just can't reach to protect, and also they are afraid of the banger, maybe,i think, dogs are mostly hating such noises that make them feel dangerous, and it's a common for them.

I've found out that a lot of dogs are afraid of thunderstorms. My dog that is scared heads directly to me when the thunder starts and trembles. It is so pathetic. lol Have a nice evening, Char
