It depends, for me. We usually do soup as the main meal and will have a smaller meal a few hours after the soup. Occasionally, we'll have a small cup of soup and a regular meal. I don't think I've ever done soup after a meal, though.

Drinking soup as a meal is my usual habit. If I am having more than soup I drink it before. It fills me up. Then I don't eat as much. That can be a good thing.lol

Soup should be eaten first. It warms the digestive system and makes it easier to digest. I often eat soups or more appropriately stews as a meal and not as an appetizer. Soups are some of my favorite foods. Black bean soup is great with fresh chopped onions and cheddar cheese on top. It is delicious.

We don't really have a "soup" course with most meals; soup in itself will often serve as a main course when we have it with a meal. Oftentimes, we will have grilled cheese and tomato soup... for which I like to dip the sandwich in the soup.
The other day we had alphabet soup... which is always a favorite with the kids. (It also had vegetables in addition to the noodle letters.)
Soup is also good when you are not feeling well - chicken soup goes well for a sore throat... Perhaps it is the saltiness of the soup that feels good on the throat?

i love sipping soup before meal cause it will make your stomach stretch a bit more for you to eat more ., that is what i knew ,. but there is an explanation behind why do we need to take it before meal ., please read below.
A new study by Penn State researchers suggests that consuming a bowl of low-calorie soup just before your meal may be able to reduce the total intake of calories in the subsequent meal.
Researchers asked volunteers to consume soups made of broccoli, chicken broth, cauliflower, potato, carrots and butter to be consumed before they had lunch. Researchers found that people ate 20 percent less calories when they had soup before the lunch entree as compared to when they just had the lunch entree. The study was funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
"Consuming a first-course of low-calorie soup, in a variety of forms, can help with managing weight, as is shown in this research and earlier studies. Using this strategy allows people to get an extra course at the meal, while eating fewer total calories," said researcher Julie Flood.
Researchers also said that all types of soup including broth, chunky vegetables and pureed soups proved to be equally filling. "Be careful of higher-calorie, cream-based soups that could actually increase the total calories consumed," Flood cautioned.
The study was described at the Experimental Biology meeting in Washington.
