Has golf lost it's roar because the Tiger is out?

Tiger Woods is out for the year... out of the running for the FedEx Championship... and now I couldn't give a hoot about men's golf anymore. I have let my suscription to Golf Digest expire and have little interest in playing.
I don't watch and very rarely keep up with what is going on or who is winning even though with Tiger out that means the likes of Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, JB Holmes, Bubby Watson, etc... have a chance to actually win.
I still follow women's golf (for now, Annika is retiring this year) casually but am not even really interested in that anymore.
Has Tiger Woods injury and him being out for at least the rest of the year hurt golf and if so how badly?
Thanks
Zelo

Could be a problem. Tiger is one of, if not the best players in golf history. Every time he is in a tournament the crowds are higher which also means profits and charity is higher. I have been to a couple of tournaments here is Houston and there is a big difference when he is not in it. Like him or not he does draw a crowd.

Can you imagine what the television networks are feeling right now. What a fiasco. Like you said the attendance is going to be WAY down... not just a little. But in that situation, even for a major tournament you are talking between 100-200,000 people... I don't know what the television audience is (or was) but I am SURE it is/was a LOT larger than that... oh Lordie the money they are going to lose on this one.
And God forbid that Tiger gets tired of playing the game (which I think he has)... he has one thing in mind and that is to beat Jack's 18 majors... when he does that what's going to happen... I just hope we have some great golf superstars coming down the pipe... and fairly soon.
Thanks for the response.

I think that the casual fan has been drawn away from the sport, but for the typical golf-lover, nothing could be better. It makes every week a toss-up, you have no clue who is going to win. It used to be Tiger wins, Tiger wins, and any tournament Tiger doesn't go to, it is barely televised. Now anybody can win: ex. Padraig Harrington. It makes the game wide open and actually attracts the golf fan to watch more. I think that the FedEx Cup is going to be fun to watch to see who can play four great tournaments to win it all. my pick: Padraig.

While we as humans cannot deny that he is the greatest ever to play the game, I think him being out is GREAT for golf! What's so easily lost in the Tiger era is how many other really good golfers there are on the PGA tour. Sure they don't stack up to him on most occasions but how exciting can watching him win by 1000 shots every week really be?
I'm one of those people, and there are MORE of us than you can imagine, that are tired of Tiger winning everything and in fact don't really bother watching the weekly tournaments intently (barring the majors) when he's in the field. In my opinion, he actually takes excitement AWAY from the game.
With his absence, the fields are wide open and it's anyone's week to win now. How cool is to watch a tourney when there's a playoff or a young golfer is trying to hang on to win his first event? These are the things that I miss. And although I too find myself saying "how the heck did he do THAT?" just about every week, I long for the more exciting days when tournaments were decided by nerves, and guts, and heart. Not by a superior player who runs everyone over every day.....

I agree with you to a certain point... and why I can't completely agree with you is that I have been to two tournaments where Tiger doesn't/didn't play and I have been to ones where he does play. The difference in the size of the crowds are astounding AND the difference in the prices of the tickets are twice as much when Tiger plays.
Try going to the Buick Invitational and getting a ticket for $50... then go to Castle Rock (The Invitational) or any of the numerous other places Tiger doesn't play and look at the size of the crowds and the scalpers trying to... not trying to actually selling tickets for twice face value.
It's like looking at a magician and wondering two things.
1. what is he going to do next
2. how the heck did he do that
Yes is the rest of the field throwing up the white flag... I don't think so. Look at the men's Olympic basketball team... in '84 was it? they were THE DREAM TEAM... the team that could NEVER be beaten... now our pros... the best players in the world are barely favorites and the rest of the world knows they have a shot at beating them... maybe Tiger can do the same thing for golf.
Additionally what is needed is someone to challenge him... you had Snead/Hogan you had Palmer/Nicholas and you have Woods/????. Mickelson tried to make a run at it and some of the shots he makes around the green are incredible... better than Tiger in my opinion but he is not even close to par with Woods. Mickelson is like the Tom Watson of today... we all love him but we know if it comes down to a shootout... we already know the outcome.
In women's golf there are a lot of girls ready to take over for Lopez/Sorenstam/Davies and the sport of women's golf is going to become more popular than ever even with the woes of Michelle Wi.
Anyway thanks for your opinion... all opinions are welcome here and it is a great way to look at the flipside to the situation...

The PGA Tour's TV ratings go up roughly 100% percent when Tiger is in conention during any given tournament so you can imagine how the ratings are suffering with him not even in the tournament. He pretty much built golf and now that he is gone for a little while he has taken it with him. Had Greg Norman won the British people would have had something to talk about, but as of now the tour will continue to suffer until Tiger comes back, and until Tiger wins.

I completely agree with most of what you say. I wouldn't say he built golf... he more like took the passed torch from Jack & Arnie and ran with it. It would have been great to see Norman win (what a guy who gets snake bit!)
It's going to be a long time until Tiger comes back and until that time there are going to be a lot of people losing a lot of money!
Thanks
