Do you salt your food while your cooking or on your plate?

I usually salt the food on my plate because my hubby doesn't like alot of salt in his food and I do. I do maybe add a little while I'm cooking along with some pepper but that's about all the seasoning I ever add. I'm not supposed to have much salt at all because I have high blood pressure but sometimes I'm bad.
I do use Morton's Lite salt so that should help a little right?
What do you do?
Char

I salt the foods while I cook, but that never seems enough for my hubby he always salts the food before eating it. I also use pepper but I also use garlic powders soemtimes and soul seasoning depending on what I am cooking.I buy the regular salt I know I should be buying the lite because we both have High Blood Pressure. I will have to check that lite salt out. I have heard that sea salts is good for you and you get the same flavor taste for less and it is good for you.

Well, I have seen it at my grocery store at Food City but every store is different so you might just have to ask the store. Hope you can find it. It is also at health stores I am sure.

Now if you have high blood pressure have you tried Ms. Dash that is really a good replacement for salt all together. Then they have seasoning the are called No Salt seasonings. You should check for them in the stores around your area. I'm not a salt person, I use other season in it's place.

I have tried Ms Dash but the one that I tried didn't taste very good to me. I know that have a lot of different kinds so I just might have to try another blend. I haven't tried the No Salt but I do use the Morton Lite Salt so I guess it's better than straight sale
Have a nice night,

I'm not sure about Morton light salt I know that is not what I'm talking about. If you have a Big Lot or a Dollar General in your town check them out and see what they have in there spices. Sometimes you will find off names that might not be in major grocery stories. Then with the Ms. Dash try the table blend, that is the one that we uses. There are other ones but I have not tried those. The one that I do like is the table blend. Give it a try and see if it's to your liking. Have a good one.

I think we have gotten to the point that if we taste it without salt, it just does not taste right, like something is missing so we add the salt. I believe we all need to learn to live without so much salt. I know it is very bad for us, but like I said all through life we have used it and now it causes your body to hold fluids, high blood pressure, then after we salt it while cooking sometimes we do it again at the table, could it just be habit. I use sea salt and it is suppose to be better for you, I know once you get used to the taste it is better than regular salt. I have used the Morton's Lite salt, but I'm just trying to get by without any at all.

I don't use salt in my cooking all the time, once in awhile I'll use a little, along with pepper too. I have high-blood pressure too, so I have to watch my salt intake, I also use Morton's Lite Salt. Some people don't like the taste of it, they say its real strong tasting, but to me it taste like regular salt, I've used it all my life anyway so I'm used to it. I think it helps a little...

Firstly I do not cook, other than stuff like pizza bites,or frozen pizzas that can be cooked in the oven, but usually I will add some salt after the food is prepared, even though I do not eat a lot of salt, because I know it is bad for my health, and I already have high blood pressure and have to take medicine for it,so I try to stay away from salt sometimes, because both my parents have high cholesterol, and they have to take medicine for it.

I don't cook very often myself. I avoid it at all costs. I know that salt is bad for your health. I just haven't got it drummed in my head yet. lol If both of your parents have high cholesterol, chances are you will have it someday yourself. Good luck!

Hi char ;p
I do put salt not while cooking...here's a tip...
Why don't you try putting some salt when you are just finish slicing any meat.Rub the meat with some salt so that before you cook it..it will sink in to the meat.So while you are waiting for the food to be cook..you will know if you still need to add some salt or if the taste is just right.Be it a beef, pork, chicken or fish..I make sure that I rub some iodized salt and let it sink it for few minutes before I cook it.My boyfriend actually followed my style about it.And there's another tip for chicken.I know you observe also that there's some part of the chicken which is so slimy..you get salt and rub it to remove that slimy thing on the chicken...bec. that slimy thing on the chicken is giving an allergic reaction for those people who has asthma...like me..after removing that slimy thing with salt...wash the chicken so that it will not be salty though...It's just a filipino way of cooking or cleaning the chicken as well.Have a great evening char. ;p

Thank you so much my friend...I learned that through my great grandmother..Asthma actually runs in the family and we are actually allergic to a lot of food..So I seldom eat chicken.I only eat the wing part. But rubbing the chicken with rock salt...if you have it then please try it..then wash it after. We actually have a native language term for that slimy thing which I can't translate in english though. But it will work. And another thing for the fish...you can actually salt the inside of the fish so that when you eat it ... inside the fish meat...there's a flavor.I don't know if you also practise it in US. ;p

I do salt some foods, but not many. It seems that potatoes just have to have salt and I do salt them when I am making mashed potatoes. But when I cook I do not salt my food, or if I do it is when I am the only one eating and I use very little. I also have high blood pressure and really changed my salt intake when I started taking medication for it many years ago. When we used to have family dinners, we used to put a salt shaker right next to my sister-in-law's plate, since she always salted everything!!

I use to add salt to cooking but don't anymore and haven't for a couple of years now, the only salt I have on food is chips and my sonm is the same, my hubby very rarely uses salt. My father in law uses it on every main meal and that is the only time we go through salt and i have to refill the salt thing, he uses to much really though but I think its just his way, my Nan is the same! I don't see anything wrong with you using a bit if you like it and everyone is bad now and then otherwise they would be REALLY boring LOL!

That's good that you usually don't use salt. I think I've become so accustomed to adding it that I don't know how food tastes without it. (and I would probably hate it without it) I also think food with nothing added would really be boring.
Have a good day,

I love the part about your girlfriend! How cute! My sis-in-law loves salt as much as I do. When we go out to eat, as soon as she sits down, she grabs the salt shaker off the table and puts it between us. Then we're both happy.
Have a great day!

Even though I'm not supposed to, I put salt on almost everything lol. Sometimes I use it when I am cooking, but most of the time I just use it when my food is already cooked.

Most of the time I salt my food while I'm cooking. I occasionally wait to salt it on my plate when I know that the kids won't like it salted or if I have company who I know won't like it salted. Have A Good One!

I like to put my seasonings especially salt on my food when it is on my plate. Occasionally I do like to put some salt on my over-easy eggs while they are cooking in the pan. You mentioned Morton's Lite salt. I think it would probably help because it is light. It is a good idea to watch your blood pressure and watch your salt.

I dont use salt when cooking, I use more herbs then salt. I dont really like salt either. Hubby on the other hand does so he will add some on things that he thinks needs them. I know salt can be bad for you but I do think that if used within reason it should be alright and seeing that you use the Mortons Lite, sounds like that would be even better for you.

Thanks for your response and Welcome to Mylot!
I wish I could learn more about using herbs in my cooking. I'm just not that knowlegable about how to use them to actually try it. Once a long time ago, my doctor told me if I was going to be a salt user to at least use the Morton Lite Salt and I've been using it ever since.
Have a great day and I hope you come to love MyLot as much as I do!

Hi friend,
I will always use salt limitedly.I will pour less but not more.If it is less than it won't be a problem but if it more than there would be a lot of problem. We have to simply throw it if the salt is more in the items we eat.If it less than they won't be any problem as i keep a salt box on my dinning table.
I use capitan cook salt which is good for health too.Ofcourse what you said is absolutely taking salt in food with less is always good for health.
Have a nice day........

When my son's dad and I were married for only 4 years (and our son was three) he had a stroke - at age 60. What a wake up call that was for him. He had been one to salt everything heavily. We stopped using salt altogether. I didn't use it in cooking at all. We also had to stop using convenience foods - at fast food restaurants and from the grocery store, because they are so full of salt. Ed and I were married for 20 years before we divorced, and I got used to having no salt.
Now I'm married to a man with diabetes II whose blood pressure is also a bit high (and he needs to lose a bunch of weight). Slowly, I'm getting him to cut back on salt. I still don't cook with it at all, giving people the opportunity to salt their own foods when they visit.
When you cut out most salt from your diet, it makes it very difficult to grab a bite at a fast food restaurant. It tastes like you're eating pure salt. Yuck.
And a piece of ham? Ewww - that also tastes like eating pure salt to me.

Thank you for your response
Unfortunately it can take a health crisis to make us change our eating habits and so far I haven't had much of a problem (not saying that it won't soon happen tho) I do have high blood pressure which is being controlled by medicine and I could stand to lose about 100 pounds so I'm sure it would help me to cut out the salt. I'm diabetic also, and that is even a bigger pain in the gazebo to control, I know.
Have a great day,
Char

I try not to use salt at all. There is so much salt in out food anyway. Occasionally I will use it, as a treat. My blood pressure is kinda high so I have to be careful with my diet (that chocolate cake I just had doesn't count).
If I am putting salt on food, it is when it is on the plate, you can see better how much you are putting on.
If your plate looks like it has snowed, you have put too much on!
