What is the meaning of tag this discussion?

Hi, I'm a new user and I just would like to find out what is the meaning of tag this discussion?
After you type evry discussion started, a box will appear asking about tags or submit tags.
Does anyone know the meaning of this?
Is it to detect other related topics to the words to wrote in the tags. Does it help you gain more or what?

Tags are phrases that relates to the topic you're discussing. It's some sort of keyword that helps others to find that topic when they use the search function. For example, if your discussion is about how to take care of golden retrievers, you can put tags like golden retriever, dog, canine, pet care, etc. If I'm not mistaken it also list that discussion in other discussions that have the same tag or are related. This way, there are more chances for your discussion to be found and get responses.
