its like the inventor saying that all the things that need to be invented have been invented already. yesterday, my hubby and i were driving and a cat crossed our path and i said 'eine kliene katze (which means one small cat in german) and i said, hey, that would make a breat title for a kids book and his reply? its already been done :-( thoughts

It's less about finding new ideas than in finding new ways to tell the story. There are probably multiple stories that could fit the title "One Small Cat". And, every writer brings their own unique view and way with words, and that makes books different, even if the basic subject is the same.

In most cases this is true. Especially for screenplays. I've been trying to come up with some type of new premise so other's can't say 'this is already a movie'. And that's my worst fear, having something be overly compared with something else. I think you should go with the one small cat idea. If it's not already a children's story why not?

No I do not think it has already been done. It would have been completely new by being seen through your eyes and told by your words. The slightest changes may make a story feel completely new. If we are unique as creatures and beings there will always be new stories to be told. And there are new inventions still. It would be a horribly boring and tideous thing if our lives did not bring about something new - if it all were there in books already. No, I do not think all the ideas for writing a book are gone. I have not written one yet, and I am sure I'd be able to write something in a new way. My way

Well, if there weren't anymore new ideas, then cultures would have nothing new and not advance anymore. Obviously, that is not the case. Plus, have you been to the bookstores lately? I can't believe how many new books are there every week! Incredible! Keep thinking, cher913. I'm sure you will come up with a good book idea that no one's thought about yet. And we mylotters will be able to say, "I new her when." Take care.

I'm sure there are always opportuntiies for creative people to come up with new plots and new story ideas. There are alot of great ideas that have never been thought of.

How could ideas run out? New experiences come along. Even the same old story, if told well, is new again! We could probably just look at our reading to see how many ideas are used repeatedly, but in a different way, or from a different angle. Think of the things that are common in our lives now that weren't there 20 years ago. More and more will be coming alog all the time. Each of those could be the seed from which the writing grows. Good luck!

I have not heard of that title! I think there are as many stories as people in the world, many of which have not been told. xxxx

As long as there are different people in the world, and the world keeps changing, there will be things to write about, both fiction and non-fiction. There may be books about small cats, for instance, but there's not YOUR book about small cats yet, and it may be the best one of all.

Yes, sometimes it seems that way, but then new books get published all the time. My mother once said she was going to write a childrens' book called "Things that Go". I had to tell her I had checked a book out of the library to read my little ones that was just that very thing. Maybe springboard off your idea and look up other potential titles to see if they've been done - German counting titles.

Look at songs, when I was in highschool the song Little Rock came out twice. One was by Reba talking about giving back her wedding ring and the other was by Collin Ray (I believe) and his was about a husband that moved to Little Rock to get over his drinking problem. Just because it has the same title does mean it is about the same thing. I think there is always going to be new ways of telling about things. As long as you have a great imagination you can come up with all kinds of things to write about.

A lot of things have been done. However, little changes can make a huge difference. Then the fact that with books, a lot of plots have been done, but small changes make a huge difference in the books. Look at Stephen King. He writes with a plot wheel. He mixes up the plot a little and comes up with a new and exciting best seller. Don't give up an idea because it "has been done before". After all, you are you and you will be adding that into the mix!
