It depends on the person. I would say Hi to close friends and hello to someone whom I get introduced for the first time or whom i meet occasionally

For me it depends on who I am talking to. Some people it feels good to say hi and others it feels right to say hello.

I prefer to say hello. Also, I try to use "thank you" instead of "thanks". It makes it seem like you really appreciate something, and you're not in a hurry.
