If your old PC broke down, would you spend money on trying to fix it or would you buy a new one? A friend of mine has quite an old PC that she has had problems with over the years. It was originally built buy some computer guy so has given her numerous troubles over time but she is quite hang up on not discarding things With the prices of PCs and laptops being a lot cheaper than they were years ago, is it really worth repairing your old PC again and spend nearly the amount that you could have bought a new one?

Weigh them up. Bring the computer to the repair people and have them assess first on how much will it cost her to have it repair. If the repairs will cost a lot enough to buy a new computer then buy a new one. If the repairs will cost less then just have it repaired and upgrade whatever hardwards are upgradeable like memory, hardisk. But if it's a motherboard or the processor you're upgrading I would suggest buying a new one.

Also there are people who are also buying old computers even those that do not function anymore are still useful to them.

I had two desktop computers years ago, and they both broke down. The first one was a Packard Bell desktop PC that I got in 1998, and believe me, when it broke down in 2003, I tried to repaair it on my own. But it was like a clown taunting, teasing, mocking my efforts. That's when I heard about the Geek Squad. They tried to fix my computer, but it wouldn't run. The least they could do was to backup my files to DVD. Recently, my second one was an eMachines that was given to me by my late psychiatrist last year. It was just as dusty as my first one, and it didn't respond. I sent THAT desktop to Geek Squad too, but they said that it's too dusty to repair, and that it's not economy-wise to do so. This time, I kept not only my old hard drive there inside my enclosure (37.2GB), but they also saved my DVD burner that was purchased 2 years ago on Christmas. So yeah, I try to have it repaired by either myself, or the Geek Squad, and if it can't be repaired, at least the DVD burner and the hard drives can be salvaged and saved.

i won't hesitate to buy a new one. if you gonna fix that one by one, later on it will be broken again. i tried that on my old pc so many times and when i'm tired of getting it fixed then after 1-2weeks it will be broken again because all the parts of it were really phased out, i decided to ask my father to buy me a new one. at least it's brand new and it's not pain in the as$ just like the old one

i did last year when i still had some money. but luckily i also bought a lap top. so, now if the desk top breaks again on me i have the lap top as back up. the reason im not crazy about the lap top tho, is because everything is so small on it and i cant up grade my glasses that i've not been able to see better with lately. also, it has vista windows that i totally dont look forward to learning more about.

Absolutely not! The price of a new computer is worth not having the hassles of getting an old one fixed. I had been given one by a friend and all I had was one problem after another-that's why they got rid of it! The computer I have now was less than $400 including everything, even the printer. It's a sound investment and you get a guarantee and you do away with someone elses headaches.

I think you'd better fix it if the problem not rock-ribbed. After all the squander is not done.

If it's an old PC then I would say your friend is better off with getting a new PC, it will most likely be faster with better features, and possibly come with a guarantee for a few years. With older computers it often takes a long time to find the parts and get it fixed so it is often easier, cheaper and takes alot less time to buy a new computer.
