Whenever my sis and I get into a fight, I always hear my mom scolding us involving these two animals! You're like cats and dogs! Me myself couldn't even think of any reason why everytime these two creatures met, the dogs bark at them while cats on the other hand would just managed to fright and run away as fast as they could. Can't they learn to like each other? Though I heard and read a lot of hearsays and stories but I am not convinced. I even owned cats and dogs at home but everytime I tried to "befriended" them, my goodness, they would just end up barking and meowing to one another! Why? Why? Why can't they be friends?

There is a story between dogs and cats.
A long time ago, dog and cat are good friends. One day, dog and cat are going for walk in the forest. And there is a river run through the forest and has many fishes in it. you know, dog can swim but cat can't.
Then the dog says:"hey, guy! I ferry you across to the opposita bank, you catch some fishes incidentally."
"Ok!" the cat answered.
When they arrive the bank, the dog look at the cat amazed.
"where are your fishes?" dog asked.
The cat wipe the fish bone and says:"I ate!"
Evermore, dogs and cats are becoming enemy.
Well, it's just a story.
I think, the dogs and cats can't be friends ,because cats like live alone, both of them would occupy and protect own demesne ,so, when the cats walk through the dog's demesne, dog bark, the same as cat.

They can be friends if they are raised together as puppies and kittens. I had a big, red chow/lab mix once and when he would lay on the couch to watch out the window at least one of the kittens would be draped over his nose fast asleep. He didn't mind. Also they would curl up in his big tail while he napped and sleep peacefully there.
So it just depends on how they are raised and when they meet each other.

Cats and dogs actually donte hate eachother and they could be friends. However, the reason cats run away from dogs is because they are afraid of them and dogs run after them because they want to play. Usually if a cat and a dog are placed in the same household at a young age they are friends and even sleep together. My friend had a boxer and a cat and they would sleep together and play together. Cats are usually on the quieter side and a dog is more on a wilder side so cats tend to run away from them. Its just like a dog loves to chase anything that runs away from it. They just want to play play play :)

I have know of dogs and cats that live under the same roof without any problems.
I have also seen cats playing with dogs in the same area. And I have also seen dogs being affectionate to cats during their rest time.
I guess it is a matter of up bringing and training.
If the two animals are brought up together, why would they find the other so frightening that they have to bite at each other's neck?

It has just been a stereotype but I think cats and dogs can be friends. My boyfriend's cat likes their neighbors dog and they play together hehe. As for other stuff like you and your brother I think you will get along once both of you will grow older. That is like me and my brother too.

Hello sweetbarbie. Its very sad to think that both cats and dogs hate each other so much. Some of my cats like my puppy and even plays with her. There was this time we kept one cat and the puppy in one cage. They seem to like each other. Whenever, they were not locked in they're cage, the puppy would would chase after her, wrestle her and bite her on the ears. Sometimes the cat will play along but other times she will hide from the puppy because the puppy bullies her.

Hi Sweetbarbie, I only have cats but I have a friend who has cats and dogs and they all live very well together. I think it depends on how and when you introduce them but it does seem on the whole that dogs chase cats and cats hiss and scratch dogs eh! Ellie :D

I've always wondered that. I know people who have both kinds of pets and they get along famously, but others are enemies or rivals. It's a natural thing, probably territorial.

Hi my friend
I believe that cats and dogs can get along in the same household, although I have never experienced it myself. I only have dogs and if I go to the vet with one of my furry kids and a cat is there in a carrier, they just want to go see it and check it out. I don't think they've ever met a cat standing in front of them so I really don't know what they would do.
I do have friends that have both dogs and cats. I guess it is just how you introduce them to one another. I know it's alot easier if they are both very young like a puppy and a kitten. That way they can grow up together.
Have a great day,
Char

Maybe they are jealous to each other.
Sometimes they just get the attention of their master.
It also defends on how the owner trained since they are small.
Sometimes either the cat think that he is more handsome than the dog. lol

Actually you can get to befriend both if they started young i.e. when they were still puppy and kitten. My cousin had a cat and a dog who shared their food at feed time and they aren't fighting. They do play with each other but I say the can is on advantage 'coz when they tease each other and the dog chases the cat, the cat gets to climb trees and all the dog can do is bark at the cat.

wasn't there a movie about the real reason why these creatures fight each other? One protects the planet while one tries to rule it? heheh
Anyway, I think it's because these creatures are very territorial and their natural instinct is to fight any intruders.
Think this is true because of the following:
- if a cat and dog grew up together they actually become friends
- if a cat happened to live on a place first, the newcomer dogs are actually afraid
of it because it sees the cat as having seniority in the pack. especially if the
cat is quite close to the human or pet owner
...I happen to be fond of both as well as other animals.

well i don't think it's really true. firstly, one of my friend has both cat and dog. the two of them gets on famously. you can even see the dog trying to protect the cat when my friend scolds her. also, i've brought my girl to the park and there she met some dogs. none of them barked at her and she didn't run away from them. she even let a golden retriever check her out, even though the golden retriever's head is bigger than the whole of my girl.
maybe you want to start the introduction slowly. firstly. give a blanket to them. then exchange the blankets so that they can get used to the smell of each other. after that, let them meet with something separating them, maybe a baby gate or something. maybe they'll take to each other and become the best of friends.

Two and my three cats and my dog play together all the time. They chase each other around the house, they hide and wait for one of the other to walk my and pounce. Even my dog has learned to do this.
My third cat just dosn't want to be bothered. He's older and set in his ways.

For me in nature cats and dogs are friends, as i've notice dogs gets irrated which are smaller to them or someone on their on size (like children), exlcuding dogs and puppies..as for cats, they'll bark because of their size.. probably ;)

Cats and dogs are good friends when they were brought up together in a good family atmosphere. Everything depends on the brought up situation to a maximum extent.
