He went peacefully in the morning

Surrounded by loved ones and his doggie mates, my little man went to sleep, to never wake up Friday morning.
I am in shock and don't really believe it yet. I miss him, but can't quite comprehend the permanence of his absence. I must be in denial, or something.
in the meantime, I highly recommend finding a vet who does housecalls when you have to say goodbye to a pet. he got to be at home with me, not in a scary vet's room. It was so wonderful.
Thanks to everyone for your kind comments. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do.

It saddened me every time I hear stories of dog having to put in sleep. I know you love so much your dog but it is better for him to be put asleep than to suffer. It is really hard to let go, but think of the happy memories that both of you shared and it will put a smile on your face.

I have gone through this situation. So I can imagine your feelings. I have lost my Rocky & I cann't sleep that night, even now also we cann't forget him, one of our family members. It is not so easy to say good bye, I am very sorry for that.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss... but remember... he is in a better place! :) ..... I know you miss him and it will unfortunately be this way for awhile.. but remember that it does get better... and eventually maybe you will be able to give another one a loving home.. and maybe that will help fill the void... Again, I am sorry for your loss... but things will get better :)

i know how hard it is to loose a pet especially dogs, i don't have a pet of my own but i am involve to a family that treated dogs like real people. they lost 2 dogs and i know that that's the hardest time in their life since those dogs are treated like part of their family. now they bought another 2 dogs and they showered them with love and really treated them like a baby. i'm sure like you they will be very devastated again if they loose these dogs.

I know exactly how you are feeling. My dog Prince, who was my baby, went peacefully on Christmas Eve, 2007. He wasn't feeling well and I laid on an air mattress in the floor next to him. He laid his head on the air mattress next to me. I dozed off for a while and when I woke up, he was gone. I almost think he waited until I was asleep. I miss him so much. He had been with me for 12 years. I got him from a shelter when he was 11 months old. He was my friend and part of the family and there wasn't a dry eye in the house that day.

I'm sorry... its so hard I know. Just the thought of one day losing another one of my fur babies makes me sad. The last one we had to put down was our lab. He was only 2, but for some strange reason he turned mean to strangers. He would even break down fences to get to them. No one would help me with him, and the vet said there was no option. I cried for days feeling so bad for how it had turned out. He may have been mean to others, but to me he was my baby. I'm glad yours got to pass on at home. I'm sure that is an easier way to deal with a tough situation.

Hi Cassidy,
That is so sweet that he got to be home with you and his doggie mates when he went to sleep. It will be very hard for you for quite a while and it will take alot of strength to endure it. I know you have other dogs, when you are feeling especially sad, just go get one of the other ones and give love to them. They will love it and it may make you feel better.

I'm glad he's at peace. Being able to do it at home is a wonderful thing and so much less stressful than loading him up and taking him to a cold room at a vet's office. I'm sure it's also a lot more private and comfortable for everyone! I'm sorry that you had to go through it at all, but it sounds like you made a good decisions and your buddy went with dignity. Can't ask for much more, in the end. *hugs*
