This is the statement a radio host said today and people are outraged and asking for the public to help boycott his show. He said,
"Michael Savage on autism: "A fraud, a racket. ... In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out"
On his nationally syndicated radio show, Michael Savage claimed that autism is "[a] fraud, a racket. ... I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.' "
http://mediamatters.org/ ... http://www.myfoxny.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=7024157&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1 ... Shame on him! We need to get people like this off the air. After clicking on the link there is an "ACTION" link under his photo. Thanks, we can make a difference.

Well just another media type not doing the required research. It amazes me the things rhat get into print or travel thru any media outlet that is NOT backed up by fact. And the internet is even worse. I got this email how the UK was taking the Holocaust out of History books because it offended some people.NOT TRUE, but did the people who forwarded it check? Now the first thing comes to mind is who thinks up this stuff? And the misinformation just keeps coming. This man should lose his job.

I agree he deserves to loose his job. I saw on tonight's news that many parents and supporters are out in front of the studio protesting and they are very very angry. They are fighting back. Thanks for your comments.

You know Hatley, you made an excellent point that I never thought of, yes this easily can cause other kids to pick on children with autism and give them a very hard time. Thank you for your comments.

I've never heard of Michael Savage before this incident but heard about this on the news last night..I remember the loud mouthed remarks that other radio host did some time ago..Imus and he got fired...but now he's back on the air again. There is no call for such a remark by anyone and I can only imagine the outrage parents feel toward him who do have children with autism...Hope they get the jerk fired..and THIS time to never return to be a radio host ever again. I've been trying to hear of updates about this, and he hasn't even said he's sorry or feel any remorse for his words.

OMG.. This is HORRIBLE! And I thought I couldn't be more outraged after Rush Limbaugh made fun of Micheal J. Fox and his parkinson's disease. I am just in disbelief. People like this should be off air! I believe in freedom of speech, but this kind of thing totally crosses the line! I can't believe anyone can be so heartless as to make fun of or talk so badly about people who have illnesses, especially considering that Autism is something people are born with! I hope this dude gets the plug pulled out so fast he doesn't see it coming!

How sad for an adult to do such a thing. I think he should be fired and if not then all his sponsors need to pull out. From the way he sounds he does sound like some other well known raido hosts around. What jerks, they need to get educated.

Clearly they will let "Just Anyone" on the Airwaves these days.
My brother should have a nice long talk with this Jerk. As far as no father around that is a huge bunch of bull. Not all families are Just the mom raising kids. My brother has a son that Has Autism, and you will never find a more dedicated Father on this planet.
Clearly you do not have to know what your talking about to be on the Airwaves these days.
My nephew is not faking and just wanting to misbehave. He trys extra hard at everything that he does. He is a very sweet person.
The best part of it all, is My BROTHER AND HIS WIFE ADOPTED HIM KNOWING THAT HE HAD AUTISM.

That is so nice to hear, your brother, his wife and your family are very special people. Yes I would love your brother to sit that Michael Savage down and give him a lesson on autism. I saw on tonight's news that many parents and supporters are out in front of his studio protesting and they are very angry. I hope his looses his job over this. Who wants to hear an insensitive uneducated fool on the air - I don't! Thanks for your comments my friend.

What an uneducated person he is. He has no clue about such things obviously. While people who do have autism can be bratty especially if kids. I know I have friends who have such a son and for awhile he was very bratty but he was a lot littler then too and so not much brattier than kids who are normal. He is getting help and learning to finally talk at age 10. He is really a very nice little boy most the time and very loving. He is the second child I have known with Autism we had a pastor had an autistic child once. This guy obviously likes to bully people and was probably a school bully. He better be careful God might bless him with an Autistic child. Then he will sing another tune.

I watched the news tonight and they interviewed him and his message to all the angry people is: "get off my back, I have a brother who is disabled" well you would think if he has a brother who has a disability he would be more understanding unless this is his way of not accepting it.

Well, I'll probably get slammed for this, but I was just talking with some friends the other day about this exact same thing. My friend's sons have ADHD and ADD, they were medicated during school to help everyone else deal with it. We know these conditions exist and can be very hard on the individuals and the families. BUT, we also know that there are MANY cases of "brats" being diagnosed with the latest catch-phrase. When my kids were growing up, my husband wanted my youngest tested for ADD because he liked to talk during class and he had poor grades. I didn't think that was the problem and after talking to the teacher and the doctor they agreed that he was most likely NOT a candidate for ADD. He just needed to learn to stop talking when the teacher was talking and to do his work. We worked on that and he was ok. My son crocheted the doctor said that there's almost no way he'd be able to sit down for 3 and 4 hours at a time and make these mini-stockings if he was ADD or ADHD. But, people are so easy to place that label on any kind of problem child.
If you notice, not many kids are diagnosed as ADD or ADHD any more, it's all autism. I think if we look back in history we'll see that there are phases that the medical profession goes through in diagnosis that are trendy.
I actually think that all these diagnosis are taking away from helping the actual cases of autism - and even ADD and ADHD when that was popular.

No, I don't know right off hand if any of the same medication/treatments are being used for both disorders. I just feel that they have been both over-diagnosed which takes away from the real cases.
A couple years ago when autism became the latest hot topic my mother said that she was pretty sure if it had been a hot topic when I was younger I would have been institutionalized for autism. I was very withdrawn, very quiet and very happy to have no contact with others. I was a bit more aggressive than the rest of the kids in my family, but nothing that really raised any alarm - back then every family seemed to have a brat in it, and I was the one in my family (most of the time). I've been taught how to behave and although not extremely outgoing have adjusted pretty well without the label or medications.
I personally feel that many parents don't want to take the time to parent their children and will encourage the doctors to medicate them in lieu of parenting them.
There are actual cases of autism, ADD and ADHD and they are real afflictions. I just think that we're too quick to label when we should be trying behaviour modification on most of these cases.

Hi reinydawn, I do agree when you say that these diagnosis are taking away from helping the actual cases of autism. Do you know if any of the same medications for ADHD and ADD has also been prescribed for autism? Thanks for your comments.

That is awful for him to say such things about kids that have this. I have a friend her son has it. He's pretty much a good kid for the most part. he just has his little spells from time to time. This man should be taken off the air for saying such things about childern. it's not like they can help it or anything.

Hello Howard. I can't tell you how much I despise Michael Savage. I get a chance to hear his radio show and I can't believe that there are people supporting this idiot.
I remember when he was on MSNBC. Suggesting a caller he labeled a sodomite should die of AIDS led to Michael Savage's dismissal as an MSNBC talk show host.
Now he's at it again. There is absolutely no place for Michael Savage on the public airways of the United States.
I just hope that all the parents of children with autism just realize that Michael Savage is nothing more than a ignorant right wing zealot.
We need more research into autism and find what is causing the spike in cases here in the United States and throughout the world.

Howard.
Here is the incident that resulted in his firing. Savage was taking viewer phone calls about airline horror stories, and a male caller began talking about smoking in the bathroom.
"Half an hour into the flight, I need to suggest that Don and Mike take your ..." the caller said, before he was cut off and his words became unintelligible.
"So you're one of those sodomists. Are you a sodomite?" Savage asked.
The caller replied: "Yes, I am."
"Oh, you're one of the sodomites," Savage said. "You should only get AIDS and die, you pig. How's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better than to put me down, you piece of garbage. You have got nothing to do today, go eat a sausage and choke on it."
He asked for another phone caller who "didn't have a nice night in the bathhouse who's angry at me today."
These bums "mean nothing to me," he said.
This is a guy that has a huge following. Hopefully, his comments about children with autism, finally puts the nail in his coffin.

Wow!! This is totally uncalled for. Personally, I cannot believe someone who is a Talk Show Host would ever say something like this, and I feel should be ashamed, and be held liable for his statement on the air as well. How can he judge something like this and say something like this without any proof? Where does he even begin to get his facts from either? This to me, is a little Crazy indeed.

This guy is an idiot and has no clue obviously. I know a few children with Autism and Im sorry they really do have something wrong and the ones that I know are quite behaved. My best friends son is Autistic and in no way is a brat. I know that some think he is rude as he is standoffish at points and he seems to know who he likes and doesnt. If he doesnt know you and you try to talk to him yes you might think he is rude but he really just doesnt like new people in his space.
He is very well behaved thou and all she has to say is be nice and he will stop and just try to stay by his moms side.
Just reading that again makes me want to tell him he is such an idiot and maybe he should start researching before making a statement like that. Yes we all have our own opinions but this is just ignorant. I do hope that he gets fired.

Actually I did hear the show when the comments were made. He was compltely wrong to make the comments especially without considering what autism is for people and families. It was hurtful and he's taken damage from it. I do not think he should be fired (or in a few people's cases hurt or killed) for what he said. Same as people on the news-BS media, and here on the lot; they say some rather baffling things, but I would not want them silenced (and again in some people's opinion, harmed/killed) either.
During the programs in question Savage was trying to address fake cases and other professionals rapidly bringing out a checklist to evaluate children. For me, it brought up some bad memories, some rough times and a few dark chapters from my past. Yes people, there are some parents, "teachers", "counselors", "daycare specialists", "doctors", etc that do this. The only reason it happened to me was not because these people cared, that's empty semantics; it happened to me because I didn't fit their perceived definition of perfect All-American Child™. Hmph. Well long story short, my parents and I were right, the supposed caring "professionals" were completely wrong. I'd hate to imagine what would have happened had the fools gotten their way.
Another thing I came across with my feeds, was this item. The author and the commentators make contrasting and various points about not just the quote, but some of the broader situation
