Before giving food of drink to your child... do you taste the food first... or do you just feed it to them when you are sure that it is no longer hot or very cold...
Do you tasted test for your kids?...
I often do... whether it be baby food like gerber or cerelac... i make it a point to taste it fist before giving it to my baby... even now that my baby is more than 2 years old... i still do this habit... just to see if it taste good enough for my baby... especially when we eat out...
Sometimes i will realize that even i find the taste good... my baby would not... and those that i think taste not so good are the ones that my baby love... we have such different taste in food...
How about you as a parent?...

Hi there aseretdd
My boys are now 3, 5 and 7 and no longer feel it necessary to check their food is too hot for them they can see if it is and feel the heat as they bring it closer to their mouths blowing it beforehand if they need to. When they were babies I always checked the temperature of their food but never actually tasted it as I used to make my own food and knew what was in it. On occassions while we were out I would buy the odd jar of food for them as it was convenient but they would never eat much of it because the taste was so clearly different to what I would prepare.
There is a company that has brought out plastic eating utensils that actually turn red if the food on them is too hot. I think the company is Tommi Tippi who make the anywayup cup.
Good luck

An anyway up cup is like a normal sipper cup but it has a screw lid so children can't pull the lid off,. like my son uses to, and it has a valve in the sipper bit so that if they turn the cup upsidedown nothing will come out. I will have a quick look on the web for you and see if I can find a web address for you.

Hello aseretdd,
It depends on what kind of food. As you know, I have many types of food that I don't eat, I like to eat and I can eat but don't like to eat and etc., etc. Normally if it is hot, I will taste it first just to make sure that it won't be too hot for my son. Whether it tastes good or not, I am also not a really good eater. My son loves watermelon which I never ate in my life *laughs* He too, has a different taste in food compare to me. He is more like his daddy.

It is a god thing that you are teaching your baby to eat be not like you... and to eat healthy food... but i think he will learn it best if he sees you eating healthy food as well... it is never too late to try... for the sake of your baby...

Hello aseretdd,
If there is a war, I will the first to die - not because of the war but because of hunger. I don't eat vegetables at all and I don't know whether you ever see fried banana. I love it but I don't eat banana itself. My list goes on and by the time I finish it, you will be fast asleep; too tired to listen to my list *laughs* Anyway, I teach my son to eat all the healthy food including vegetables and fruits as I don't want him to be like me.

When my baby was small (I mean a baby really) the taste of the food would not matter to me as because I knew that there were very few options available to make the food tasty. It was the same Cerelac or mashed veggies or soft rice and fish etc. I would of course check whether the food was lukewarm enough for his tiny tongue.
However, now that he is 9yrs, I experiment a lot with food and its taste. Recently I have started adding mild chillies to our food so that he develops the taste for that. I am cooking spicy food and other cuisines too like noodles and pasta and various fried items. I also make different milk shakes and fruit concoctions for him. However, I now don’t test how hot the food is now…I urge him to try and eat the hot food a little at a time…like soups and hot noodles.

Hi aseretdd,
I can recall my MOm doing that when my Sister and I were growing up. The main reason is the same, checking if it is not too hot for the kids..
But, some of my friends will not do it, just instruct their babies to be careful and said, it might be hot!
Personally for me, it's better to make it sure so that we can avoid any crying or burning their tongue! LOL!

I agree... it is best that we parents make sure ourselves that the food we are serving our kids... especially the very young ones are not too hot... since that is a very painful experience... doing the taste test is actually a sign that we really care... thanks for the response...

it is advisable to taste first any for you are going to give in an infants or a kids. we are aware already about this because we know how to used our sense not like the kid who doesn't know or they react but they can't say any words about it except the children who knows to speak words. i test all the foods i give to my little brother and little sister because i am taking care of them if my mom is out of our home.

It is such a hard habit to break... but i don't see anythig wrong with it... so we can do it as long as our children are not ashamed of that action... maybe i will try to stop when my baby turns 10... maybe later or earlier... thanks for the response...

I NEVER do the taste test. I usually test if it is hot using my finger...but don't bother about taste. The taste of the kids are very different from that of adults. They are used to bland tastes and my kids are encouraged to eat anything irrespective (unless it's really really bad stuff). So, everything goes in and they eat everything.

Kids like bland food... but as they grow older... they also become adventurous and choosy... my daughter is like that... she would sometimes request what she wants to eat... like "Sinigang" or Pizza... depending on her mood... thanks for the response...

When I am cooking for my 6 and 4 year old, I do stick my finger in it slightly to make sure that it isn't too hot. Especially for my younger child because she seems to be sensitive to hot things, or at least she acts that way lol. Cold things I don't worry about, they have both had the "brain freeze", so they know not to eat it too fast. If not, they can have another "brain freeze" and it will remind them lol.

How or what does it feel to have brain freeze?... i often hear this... but i don't think i have ever felt it in my life... i am not really into very cold food or drinks... even with ice cream... my baby also sometimes acts that way... i think that is just to get my attention... thanks for the response

It is not good let me tell you that. Its like your brain actually freezes, gets cold, and it causes a temporary headache. What happens is you get too much cold stuff in your stomach, and it draws in more blood to counteract the cold. When too much of that blood comes from your brain, it causes it to hurt.

Well, i can understand because your daughter is too young... my daughter is already 2 years and 3 months old... but i still taste her food before giving it to her... most of the time we just share... and i don't know when i will stop doing this... thanks for the response...

No, I don't. When my daughter was an infant I did, like baby food. That was one reason I did not give her a lot of jarred baby food, at least not the combination type things. She liked the fruits and sometimes other things, but not the things like 'chicken and noodle dinner'. I tried one of those, disgusting! I can't believe people feed that stuff to babies!

I used to test some things, but lets face it, bought baby food is horrible and even I would not test that. Tasting for temperature is very natural and necessary and also testing for sugar or salt content. Sometimes my children would get very upset if I had any of their food so I had to be a bit tricky.

I agree... a lot of baby food taste horrible... i should know because i tasted most of them... i just do not understand why they would create baby food that taste like they are not for human consumption... i rarely buy them... thanks for the response... welcome to mylot and i hope you enjoy every minute of your stay here...

I also have always tested food and drink before giving it to me my children when they were young. I could think of nothing worse than giving your children sour milk thinking it was still okay or food that was only warm on the outside and extremely hot in the centre. We would not like that to happen to us.My children also had very different tastes to me when they were young but providing the food was fresh and not too hot or cold for their mouth I didnt rely on my taste buds for flavour, because I could never understand what they found so appealing in pre packaged baby food. I think as parents we tender to have a six sense when it comes to evaluating food we give our children and we are usually pretty close to the mark it what they will enjoy and what is safe for them to eat and drink.

Most of the time... those that i think taste bad are the ones that my baby love... especially in juice drinks... maybe children taste food differently from adults... so even if i do not like it... i still let my baby taste it just to see if she will... thanks for the response...

I also always check the expiration date before buying them... some supermarkets still put expired products in the hopes that customers will not check if they are already expired or not... that is just a shame on their part... thanks for the response...

I haven't had any small children in my home for a very long time. But I always went by the age of the child. When they were old enough to learn the difference between hot and cold than I stopped doing the taste touch. To me it was no longer needed. Also I never served really hot food. So the kids could manage it on their own without them burning their tongue.

good day... I do exactly the same thing not only to test if it's too hot or too cold but also if it's ok. I mean drinks in can or cartoons can't be inspected by our eyes if we give it directly to our kids where their sense of taste are not yet well define, they might drink it to the last drop even if it's already sour. taste before drinking. better safe than sorry..

I agree... some milk in cartoons tend to be sour even if the expiration date says otherwise... so i still taste... but just a sip... it is indeed better to be safe than sorry afterwards... because kids will be kids... and we are responsible for them... thanks for the response...
