I rescued a pup yesterday!

I rescued this pup yesterday! I went over to a friend of some family member's and they had 8 dogs in this small kennel! No food or water! All the dogs were skin and bones. They are Chihuahua's. I wanted to take them all home. I could only get close to one! I have her home now and she is terrified. She has grown on me but is so timid around others. I hope this goes away with time. How long does it take a dog to trust after they have been abused? Will she always be like this? What do you know about Chihuahua's? The other thing is would you call the animal shelter on these people! I really think I should but not sure if I should cause waves. I feel so bad for these dogs!

I would definitely turn those people in. How would they like to be treated like that? I think after an animal has been abused certain things will trigger that memory and they may react to it. They get less timid and learn to trust others, but if you had been abused wouldn't it always stay with you? Best wishes!

OMG! most certainly. these are wonderful little dogs once you get their trust. mine sleeps right by me in bed at night and follows me all around the house. if you could get 1 more it would help as they would be company to each other and a little less scared. they do tend to be shakey scared little things until they get used to you.

So they are skittish! Are they family dogs? Are do they just get protective of one person? I should have took one more. The pound is going out there now! I will have to go adopt another. Makes sense A buddy to chum with. So far she loves me but is skittish with my daughter. She moves fast so it scares her. Might take some time for her to get use to the little one.

yes, they are very nervous little things, with strangers. it takes a while for them to warm up to anyone. and sadly they may have pee accidents because of it. mine finally got over that after she was a year. she also took longer to make up to my grandson, but now hes her second favorite person. they can be a family dog, but are a bit fragile it seems. mine loves the whole family and pouts if they dont visit for a couple days.

You did a great thing! I agree with a prior poster, you should call animal control about the other dogs. Do you watch Caesar Milan on Dog Whisper? He has wonderful tips. If I were you, I'd go to the public library and check out one or more of his books. If your library doesn't have his books, go to a bookstore, a find a seat, and read there. I wish you and your tiny puppy much luck!

I don't know much about Chihuahuas, but keep loving her, just love on her 24/7. Make sure she has everything that she needs. As for the family that abuses these dogs, they should be in jail, for animal abuse. If it was me, I would call the animal control in a heartbeat, I would have called as soon as I got home from bringing the puppy there. Her brother's and sister's deserves a better life, just like her, and in a shelter, they would be seen by a vet, feed, given water, the full nine yards before being placed for adoption. You should see if they have the 7 still there, and as soon as you get in your car and turn around a block, call the animal shelter. Make sure you have written the number down and take it with you. You would be causing great waves, you would be saving those 7 dogs lives. Just like humans, animals needs food and water to survive.

That's wonderful news. I'm so happy to hear that the other 7 have found loving homes. Was the family giving them away free, if so, they would have been gone in a heart beat here where I live. I see people all the time at my local Walmart giving away puppies and kittens. I wish I had room, and patience to adopt them all. We adopted a lab/sheperd puppie a year ago. Besides the not coming back when she gets lose outside, she's a very well behaved dog.

I.hate.people. I would so call animal control. Who cares about waves? Seriously. I assume you are having some sort of heat where you are at and it is dangerous for anyone, animal or not to not have water. And that is just the beginning. She will outgrow the timidness, but she may retain it around those she feels are like her previous dipwads.. That is about all I know about Chihuahuas.

Chihuahua's are naturally very shaky animals. We have two of our own and one of them will sit down and shake, very scared of us if we approach. This is only my fiance and I and only sometimes. I think she will come around, just well even though this may sound crazy, baby talk her. I hope that she adapts to you soon, oh and call the humane society on them. The humane society will take the dogs in and keep them until someone comes to rescue them!

I would call. As for the timidness, my neighbors took in an abused dog over a year ago. He was skin and bones and so afraid of everything he would just tremble. It took over 6 months for him to become somewhat normal. He's a sweet dog and you can't help but love him. Now he's pretty confident and plays well. They are very careful about correcting him so as not to undo the progress. It's so good to see him play and on occasion he will even come up and put his head under your hand to let you know he wants to be petted. When I was younger I had a siberian husky rescue that was the same way. It took time, but we all loved her. If you give her a reason to trust you, she will. It takes a lot of time, but it is well worth it. I think my husky knew she had been rescued and loved us all the more for it because of the way she acted toward us.

I think it is great that you were able to rescue one of the puppies at least. I think that it will take some time, but the dog should learn to trust you and stop being so timid after awhile.

That's awesome. No food or water? That's so sickening to hear this. I' glad you were able to save one of the pups. We used to have a dog that adopted and was abused and he never fully got over being timid. It's a sad thing to see. I don't think a dog will ever forget where they've been. You can only try to soften the memory by showing your love and teaching them love.

Well, are the waves more important than those dogs? That's the question. I have a cat that was once abused before we got him. He was terrified of everything. We couldn't even walk near him. It took him a good 6 months before he began to act semi-normal, but was still afraid of sudden moves and loud noises. We've had him about 6-7 years and he's not afraid of much of anything anymore.

I guess the only answer is time! She will trust when she is ready! I decide I will call animal control. I hate being a rat but I do not think I will get any sleep until I do!

Chihuahua is what I have now and I adopted her from a shelter too and she is so very loving . I rescued a 12 year old cat many years ago , and she was so scared when I first saved her , but with in a week she warmed up to me , and is the best cat ever . She will be okay , just give it time , and time to adjust

Yes yes yes - call the shelter or the ASPCA. They will save those little dogs and charge the owner. DO NOT hesitate. I would have been on the phone immediately. Poor little things. Chi's are very sensitive and the puppy may always be shy. Eventually, the dog will trust you more but dogs that have been abused are like humans who have been abused. It will take a lot of time. Take good care of her - Chi's are beautiful little dogs- We absolutely love our little Zoe. They are funny, sweet, and smart little dogs. We have other dogs but Zoe is the queen in our house. Where is the kennel? Maybe I could take the rest home.

Hi i really respect people who care about animals.I'm an animal lover myself. Here in india i see that animals are treated so badly and it makes me so sad that i can't rescue all of them.Since i can't possibly do that,i do the best i can.I've rescued several stray pups and kittens.I don't have a place big enough for a pet but i hand them over to friends who love animals and are ready to care for them.I go and visit them regularly.Just recently i rescued a kitten who had no chance of surviving since there were too many dogs about the place and i saw no mother in the whole day that i spent with it.Its siblings had already been killed by dogs and some run over by passing vehicles and i just couldn't let it die too.So i took it to one of my friends houses and she fell in love with it instantly. I do believe you should call animal shelter on these people, only for the animals sake.I mean, they deserve so much better.I don't know anything about chihuahua's but dogs in general do take their own time to settle, especially after such an experience. So give her all the love you can and leave the rest to her.Eventually she will start trusting you and will be just fine.So hang in there!

Yes definately call the animal shelter as those people have no right to an animal if they can't look after it. With a lot of love and attention you will have one sweet little dog it could take anywhere up to a manth or two if it has been badly treated but if it is only neglect once he knows that you wont hurt him he will end up fiercly protective of you as I found out with awild cat that I tamed. I couldn't go anywhere without him except when I went in the vehicle. I have since lost him which has devastated me, I wish you all the best in your endeavours with the pup

Awww that is so nice. I don't really like to take care of dogs (or any pet) but I do have high respect for those who really take care of these animals. I hope you will be able to make the pup fat and healthy. In our country, there is such a thing called PAWS or a group that takes care of abused and abandoned animals. If I can only take home one pup, I'd call them to take care of the rest.
