Okay, yesterday I go to the dentist for yet another root canal. I got a LOT of novacaine. And about 2 hours later, I feel this inch on my chin but my chin is still numb. I go to scratch the itch! I can't feel it but the itch won't go away. I try to scratch harder - I still can't feel it. I itched for about 30 minutes before it went away on it's own.
So did your body ever do anything like that to you? Strange experiences that you may have had?

I had the same problem. I changed over to glycerine based soaps -- I get them at Bath & Body works. They are expensive but I buy them at their semi-annual sale for a dollar each so that is not so much.
Then I slater with lotion twice a day after showering.

I know exactly what you are talking about! Last year I had some dental work done and for some reason the novacaine just wasn't working so they kept giving me more and more. My chin was numb for 3 days! lol I got that weird itch too. I tend to get itchy with pain meds too. Something about histamines my husband told me.

3 days, that is incredible. I could not drink, I kept dribbling and I don't normally do that. Really! Did it itch as the novacaine wore off or was it intermittent?

It itched on and off; a little more when it really started to wear off. Instead of scratching it I pushed on it really hard. It was so weird that my chin was numb for so long, but it was ONLY my chin that stayed numb so there was no dribbling. My brother's sister in law is a hygenist so I asked her about it on day 2. She laughed and said it would go away. For awhile I thought my chin would be numb forever! lol It wasn't really bothersome, just weird!

I never had that happen to me before. I hate the dentist too. I must admit this one was very good. Even getting the novacaine was pretty pain free. And she had these teeny tiny hands and that does make a difference. You get some of these guys with these huge godzilla sized hands and they tell you to open wider, you feel like you need a hinge on your jaw.

Yes it has happened to me many times and i do not like the feeling of an itch that cannot be scratched...I did a lot of dental work last year, including root canals among other things, and i had this happen to me..The reason this happens is because the numbness is wearing off and the feeling it coming back and while it is happening it just itches so bad,and when you try to scrath it does no good..I hate this feeling but i know it is going to happen every time they numb me up...

this was the first time for me, I found it really interesting. i don't think it had anything to do with the numbness since it was only in 1 specific spot. I think it was just a normal itch that I could not scratch.

Phantom pain! Wow, and you would think that by now your brain would have figured it out, Clean under the fingernails, that is weird, unless I am playing in dirt I don't get that feeling. Cleaning under the finger nails is more of a visual thing to me. But that is the same kind of things.
I hope you got some money for those fingers.

Yeah, my grandmother had both legs amputated and she gets phantom "itches" in her ankle or her toes. Or she'll have a pain in her toe.

I have a place like that on the side of my heel on my right foot only I have not had novacaine shot in it. hahaha It takes it by spells, I will scratch hard and it does no good, I try easy, no good....no matter what I do I can't cure the itch then all of a sudden it is gone. But I have had novacaine before and know exactly what you are talking about and you have to be careful that you don't scratch too hard and start bleeding and not even realize it.

Wow, you get that on your heel with no novacaine ..that would be very frustrating. Have you tired a benadryl spray to see if that will work?
Oh I did not do it near hard enough to bleed..but it was frustrating.

that strange !! you feel itchiness when you still felt numb ..maybe its the blood flowing in your arteries that causes it..just guessing okwell yeah i dad experience itchiness in my legs just a month ago..with no reason at all..i really dont know why..especially if i sweat a lot..but it was gone after a week or so without putting any linements to ease the itchiness..

Well the itch was in just one little spot, so I don't think it was the blow flowing thing. I think it was just an itch. I frequently get itchier then usual in the summer and I think sweating has a lot to do with it.

I've had that happen once, only it seemed my whole face itched like mad until the novacaine finally wore off. Also like if I have to get a shot for something or go to give blood, weeks after the area has healed the spot where the needle was stuck will itch or will have like a phantom pain in that area. Doesn't last long or I just get use to it, but either way still strange how my body reacts to some things.

I never get the itch from giving blood. Your whole face..that must have been awful. I am truly amazed by the human body and we actually know very little. And there is no way that you can go to a biology book and learn why you can feel an itch when your face is numb.

It's probably part of the novocaine wearing off. THe bad thing is, that by not feeling it, you can actually damage your skin by trying to scratch too hard. I've never had that happen to me with novocaine, but I've only ever had one very minor cavity filled.

The novacaine lasted for at least an hour after the itch stopped. Only one minor cavity. My dentists can buy vacation homes on my dental work.
She told me yesterday that part of the problem is the way my teeth hit each other. I should have had braces as a kid and didn't.

Just a question, did the feeling in your chin come back after the itch went away. I have noticed that sometimes when the Novacaine is wearing off you get an itch or a tingle like a limb that has fallen asleep waking up. I haven't had any strange experiences like that really, but a few funny ones that I don't think would fit here. But I would be happy to share them if you like!!!

I would love to hear your funny experiences! The feeling did come back but it was at least an hour later. And it just nicely faded away, no weird sensations, it was just gone.

Thank God, i've never had to have a root canal. i hear they are very painful. It's sad you had to have one, but I had a cavity filled at the dentist once, and my cheek was numb for like two hours afterward. It was so weird. I had to chew on the other side of my mouth. I like my dentist though, he is a sweetie.

This is my 2nd one since May. I have had several, but I have to admit. They are not really all that bad. I think they used to be a lot worse.
Yes, I was numb for a good 4 hours.

hi debs p lace oh yes I am on the waning end of shingles'
and the spots where they are feel numb to touch yet they itch like the very dickens. the doctor has me on twocapsules of a
medication twice a day that is supposed to help the nerve
pain and its working slowly but surely I will be on it a month. Ido have these numb places that astually do itch and zap me, its hard to describe really but its definitely not pleasant. Its almost like being shocked when youwalk across a rug then switch on alight. its a strange feeling indeed.

I know about nerve pain, I have trigeminal neuralgia. Shingles takes forever to get better, that type of itching would drive me crazy. I think that is one of the bodies wonders they don't really know how to fix yet, it just has to run it's course and they treat the symptoms not the cause.

Yep, I have a story. I have had 4 major surgeries on my abdomen. Before the last one, I told the surgeon that I wanted him to either take out everything I could possibly live without or put a zipper on me! I was tired of being cut open!
Anyway, after the last surgery (hysterectomy), I was, and still am, numb between my belly button and my pelvic bone. I get itches there and try to scratch them but I can't feel it!
It's so weird that you can feel the itch but not feel the scratching! I'll probably be this way for the rest of my life, because it's been 16 years now since I had that surgery and I have not had any feeling at all come back in all that time.

16 years! Wow, that would make me crazy. Of course, I guess a weird itch is better then another surgery, since those are not fun at all. It is weird that it can happen like that, the human body is certainly a mystery. I wish I understood it better, like why can't we tickle ourselves?

How did your chin feel from being scratched after the novacaine wore off??
I have never had anything like that happen, but I have read extensive accounts of people who hae lost arms, legs, hands, fingers, feet and toes, where they eel "phantom pain" pain in the lim that isn't even THERE. I also read that this phantom feeling is extremely important if one wats to e able o conrol an artificial limb.

It was fine, I know enough to stop. I severed a nerve in my hand over 20 years ago and feel no pain there in a part of my thumb. I am aware that damage can be done without feeling it.

Aww the phantom itch :))0 by any chance had you had a pain pill before the itch. Codeine and Novocaine any of the 'caines or narcotics make me itch like the devil. I have to take a benadryl with the pain pill to take care of the itch the combind affect makes for some interesting sleeping :)))

Nope, I had nothing, I was figuring on Nitrous Oxide and I definitely did not want to take anything with that, but I did not get it. I'll bet you sleep well after that. Benadryi is what they put in things like Tylenol PM
