I was just wondering if anyone here is afraid of storms. My mother is terrified of them. If it even starts to rain all electronics in the house are turned off and unplugged. Even they air is turned off! I personally don't mind them as long as they are not associated with tornados or anything really bad. We are having a severe storm come through my town right now and my mother made sure she was in some big place to ride it out. She likes to go to Wal-mart since it is so big. I find it funny.

my mother-in-law used to be so scared of thunderstorms that she would sit in the cupboard under the stairs till they were over! Then she went to Florida and saw REAL thunderstorms and, since she was outside, couldn't hide. Although she was still not very keen she didnt have to hide from English storms again!

A cupboard under the stairs sounds really useful if it was needed. I am sure my mom would use it if we had one. I like to watch storms but I don't like to be outside. I have been caught on a boat during a storm before and was petrified. That is one incident I never wish to repeat again.

Here in the Philippines, we have so many storms that comes all year. Some of them were just little ones, but some of them brings about a destruction to our country, like the recent one called "Frank". I am not afraid of storms, i like it when it rains because it makes the place cooler, but i hate it when it starts to strikes lighting and the sound of the thunder. Thunder sounds makes me go somewhere close, and if lighting starts to attack i would turn off the tv, and computer... which i think is a good way :-)

I live a little too far inland for hurricanes. Sometimes we will get the remnants of some hurricanes when they come up from the gulf or easter seaboard. But they never hit us as hurricanes. They are usually just depressions by the time they get to us and bring mainly some storms and a whole lot of rain.

Nope.... I love storms!! Pity we dont seem to get the really big ones like we used to years ago!! I love listening to the Thunder and hearing the rain and watching the flashes of lightning... oh sooo pretty!!! The last few summers the most we get though is a few rolls of thunder and a few flashes of lightning and then it goes.... maybe this upcomming summer will be better for storms!! Plus I want the warmer weather I am sooo freeing cold at the moment!!!

I wouldn't say that I'm afraid, per se. I definitely cautious become storms are so unpredictable. My grandma used to do that, unplug everything and sit in the dark to wait for the storm to pass. I'm not fully like that, but I will step away from the computer.

I personally love storms... I love the sound of rain & thunder, I love the sight of lightening & raining... My daughter is scared of them, though... Every time when it's lightening outside, she comes into our room, me & my girl friend, & wants to sleep with us... I personally like'em very much...

I don't find it funny at all I hate them and am scared of most of them. I do better if there is someone around with me but am scared when am home alone and hubby is at work. I was born and raised in cali so we didn't have really bad storms maybe once in awhile and I was scared then. I am now in SC and oh my gosh this year was the worst for tornado warnings and such. I wanted a cellar or basement so bad it wasn't even funny. Some storms don't bother me the ones with heat lightening and such. But mention tornado or if I see that lightening that likes to come down and touch the ground or the lake down the road well it isn't to good. lol Everyone has a fear of something. I kind of deal with it a little better now. I met someone that is more scared than me. Had a close call to a tornado this year and well I decided i hate spring storms and they scare me.

Well if she gets stuck she will have supplies lol. Like you I don't mind it unless it has a tornado coming with it. I've always been afraid of tornado's and knock on wood I've never been through one and hope I never am in one.

That is funny. But I'm not afraid of storms. I really like them. I might get jumpy once in a while but who doesn't when you hear the thunderstorms and everything. There was really loud lightning earlier this morning and it woke me up. It also woke up my mom. I just smiled and went back to sleep. My mother also doesn't like to keep things plugged in. But the thing is that she tells me to turn of my laptop but doesn't turn of the television. Which isn't fair. Happy mylotting!

i expect thunder storm badly because it only rains 3-6 times a summer here. And it comes soon and goes soon, which can't last long. the dry and hot summer make me uneasy and upset. I hope there will be a thunder storm to weep off the hot and wash away the dust. I believe most dwellers in Beijing will be exciting when there is a thunder storm.

I'm not afraid of thunderstorms. Tornados & hurricanes make me a lil nervous tho. I was raised to unplug everything when I was growin up. With the surge protectors etc now days I don't think it's really necessary now. I do, however, find it interestin that she feels safe in Wal-mart as those box structures collapse faster than a house; plus they are in an open area where tornados like to roam. I am a firm believer that when its your turn to go, you will go no matter where you are; but I don't suggest temptin fate. I have a friend who is afraid to be by herself during any storm. Yet if somebody is sittin with her she feels safe. Seems to me she's in the same danger alone or with a friend. It is not my place to judge anyone so I keep my mouth shut (& giggle a lot)

Hehehe, this discussion caught my attention because we just had a storm here, and i was a bit frightened ...as the thunders were really striking the ground,i could see them and hear them striking..and the cars alarms went on everytime a strike came, and it felt like it strikes right the parking lot behind my block..
But i usually like storms, i like to be inside and watch the rain and the sky going light as on daytime..i like to watch the thunders...it's quite amazing.
But today it was not as beautiful, as it felt like any strike could hit my flat and that was scarry...
So not all the storms are the same, some thunders can be far away and you can enjoy seing them from the distance, and some can really feel like a meter away...and i think that is dangerous too,and that would be the right time to unplug your electronics,at least the ones that you care about:)
I didn't do this today,as i was on mylot and didn't wanna leave
hehe

Lol, actually, I'm the type who, instead of running for the basement, would grab a camera and run for the car. I love a good storm. I have seen one full blown tornado ever, it was in Connecticut, I was 12 at the time. I remember being both scared and fascinated at the same time. I think ever since that time having a love of storm chasing.

I'm not sure why she would feel safe in Wal Mart or any other open-space store or building. That is not the safest place to be, unless of course it is just a thunderstorm or rain. I have always loved watching weather, I was a Skywarn Weather Spotter, through NOAA for 4 years. The only thing I make sure that is unplugged or off is our computers, and only if there is lightening in the immediate area.

Storms rejuveniate me, I love them. The rumble of thunder rolling across the sky
and making the ground itself tremble is awesome. The storms remind me of the power
that my Higher Power has and I feel that we all need to be reminded of that more often.
Watching lightening flash across the sky is so amazing to me! But, I don't take chances with certain things during storms. My hands aren't going to be in dish water and I avoid handling certain electrical objects during storms.

Although I am not a bit scared of storms but my Mom sometimes gets little bit terrified when a storm actually strikes . In my childhood I used to virtually watch the storm get past me . But don't think I am gonna do the same thing when a Tornado strikes . Still now I get excited whenever the sky over me gets darker and wind gets stronger every minute . Now I use to watch it from the rooftop (I am getting older , for sure ) .

Living in Florida I am a veteren of storms. Not only are we the lightning capital of the world and have 10x more powerful lightning than anywhere else but we also get hammered by hurricanes. I have actually come to love the storms just because they are so powerful and create quite a light show. Im also one of those people that finds rain calming and tranquil so naturally I like all kinds of storms.
Funny story about your mother though, it reminds me of how my mother acts when the hurricane season starts up.
