I didn't expect that!

Corelle - Supposedly unbreakable. I think not!

I was in the kitchen having a discussion with my husband and, for emphasis, whacked one of my Corelle wear dishes against the counter. He said to be careful I would break it. I said Corelle and is unbreakable. I could toss it on the floor and it wouldn't break. To demonstrate this I tossed it like a frisbee onto the floor. Guess what? It shattered into a thousand pieces! I just started to laugh hysterically and told him that wasn't supposed to happen. He just walked away. That was very unexpected. What was the last truly unexpected thing that happened to you? I am not sure what has happened to all my dishes in the last few years, though I suspect the stepson has thrown them away rather than washing them. I now have only 3 left!

I laughed for a good five minutes myself! It is very hard to sweep up shards when you are giggling uncontrollably.

I had some clear casserole dishes that were safe for the oven and safe to put on a burner. I also had some alsmot identical looking dishes that were for the oven but not direct heat like a burner. I was attempting to heat something up on a burner when it exploded. Stew went everywhere. Luckily, the dog and I had just walked away from the stove when it blew up. He just looked at me like "cool, do I get to clean up the mess?"

That must have been hysterical! I am glad that you both were a safe distance away to not get hit by shrapnel.

My mom always warned me that Corelle would not only break, but would shatter into very sharp shards. It was from experience because she, herself, had one break. You know, I think on virtually any item there's a "sweet spot" that, if you hit it at just the right angle with just the right force, will break. Thanks for my laugh of the day, though. My last unexpected thing re: kitchen disasters: Getting ready for a date (long time ago), after I'd bragged to this gentleman that I made great spaghetti & meatballs. Oh yeah, I made it alright and put it in a depression-era glass bowl I had. Of course, depression-era glass isn't tempered but I was so hell-bent on being impressive that I forgot. Put it on the burner of the stove (low - to keep it warm) and exited the kitchen to finish my primping. Good thing I did 'cause the next sound was a loud "kaboom!" Yep, the dish shattered ("exploded" is more like it) and the kitchen, the floor and the walls were covered with glass shards and spaghetti. Needless to say I was less than impressive that night :)

That sounds like a heck of a mess to clean up! And spaghetti sauce stains almost instantly, kind of like Kool-aid. Did you see him again after that and finally make him a great meal?

I just bought some corelle wear because it is harder to break. I would have confidently thrown the plate on the floor too. I guess now we both know better. Im sorry that happened to you though.

At least you have a full set! I only have 3 plates left and 4 bowls. I think my stepson throws it away when he cleans his room instead of washing it. He is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I am waiting to buy new stuff if and when he finally moves out.

I have heard several times before that Corelle dishes were unbreakable, but I know a few people who have broken them testing that theory. I dropped a cheapy plate on the floor last week and it did not break on me. That surprised me. I was waiting for it to shatter.

Since I have only 3 left, I will have to treat them more reverently! LOL

trace86 hi the last truly unexpected thing that happened to me was the day I was getting ready to drain my pasta from the pan into my strainer when the handle of my hot pot came loose and I dumped the boiling hot pasta and the pan into the sink with water and pasta splashed all over and a steam burn on my wrist. That pan was retired and my son bought me all new revere war with copper bottoms and sturdy handles. lol. That was unexpected to stand there holding a pan handle and no pan. lol.

Oh my! That must have been a funny site to behold, except for the burn. How nice of your son to buy you all new though.

I really expected it to bounce a bit. That what it has always done when I have dropped one.
