I believe that it is both. You happen to be in the right place at the right time. You come up with an idea that takes the world by storm. Uncle Joe passes and leaves you the family business. These are all situation that you happen to luck into, your continued success will depend on your hard work

When I see discussions on luck versus hard work I am reminded by Gary Player and Steve Davis who both mentioned that, "The More I practice, the luckier I become." I think this saying sums up how luck and hard work go hand in hand.
Luck is actually the key to success. Personally, I prefer the word opportunity, luck gives the impression of being what we use in a casino. Knowing how to grab and opportunity or chance is what makes the difference between success and failure. Bill Gates would have just been another computer geek had he not been 'lucky' enough to get to meet the right people at IBM so that he could sell them the idea of licensing DOS. Many athletes win the match when they get a 'lucky' break when the ball rolls a certain way in their favour at that crucial point. Call it luck, chance or opportunity, you need it to get ahead in life and succeed. When you get a bit of opportunity, you got to grab it and make the most of it.
However, how do you know when you are lucky? What do you do before you get lucky? The answer is you have to get ready for it and how do you do it? You have to work hard, you have to prepare. A professional lawyer, for example works hard on cases nobody wants and often for very little money. He or she develops knowledge of the skills of a lawyer, developing a reputation for being good in court and helping the client. Then, all of a sudden along comes that 'lucky break' the case that makes or breaks a career. It's something similar for the professional athlete, who works hard, training until he or she makes the sport part of the natural movement. And then that 'lucky break' happens.
So there you have it. You need to succeed with luck. But you can only get lucky with hard work and staying lucky is also hard work. Thomas Edison says, "Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration."

I believe in hard work in attaining my success.
I don't trust in lady luck.. For all i knew she
still in some far away places busy with other
people. Then if i have to wait for her,I will be
too old. In hard work, slowly but surely.

I believe in hard work. I'm never lucky. So I have to work hard to make things happen for me. I've always worked hard for what I have and that is the only way for me to get ahead or to have things go my way. Once in awhile it would be nice to have some luck but that never happens for me.

I'll say that both are needed to achieve an above-normal degree of success. Hard work can really take you to quite a high level but for reaching that ultimate peak, a twist of luck may be necessary, but it may not be an absolute necessity. On the other hand, if you just rely on luck for bringing you success, then God help you, because most certainly you won't be achieving anything. Nobody in this world is so lucky that luck can provide them all the success in life. Hard work is irreplaceable for success.

I really believe a person makes his own luck! Was Donald Trump lucky? Also, a person doesn't have to beat yourself up physically to work hard. I personally work hard mentally every day. For instance in sales a person works hard with their eyes and ears more than anything. Then, they use their voice more. I do beleive that a person should never pass on an income option that looks good! I just found a great one and it is not costly at all. Not an MLM or any other program. Just a great money maker. I like getting up in the morning and checking my paypal account now! If ayone would like to know about this let me know.

Luck for me is just a conselation. Hard work never guarantee you a fortune though. The secret for me to succeed is a combination of hardwork and some brain. Sometimes even though you work hard, your sweat will only be in vain when you are not sure what you are doing. Its just like building a house without a plan.

I think it is both. You have to work hard, but luck could land you in a position that you wouldn't have gotten if you had not worked hard to prove yourself.
