When and how did you learn to drive?...

I learned how to drive when i was 29 years old... quite a late age... but i don't think i would be compelled to if i did not work abroad... where not knowing how to drive means riding the bus all the time just to get to work... so i was forced to learn... and a co-worker who was my suppose to be friend (long story) thought me how to drive an automatic van... Now that i am in the Philippines... where i do not have a car and public transportation is available in different forms (Jeepneys, Bus, Taxi, Tricycle)... a person do not really need to drive... but my father just bought an automatic van... and my interest in driving sparked again... so i got myself a student's driver's license... and just last Sunday... with my brother... i tried driving after 3 years of not being behind the wheel... I must admit that it was very interesting... that i did not forget any of the do's and don'ts i learned years ago... and great that i can drive again... so... do drive?... when and how did learn to?...

i am 38 years old and i dont know how to drive. we dont have a car that is why. lol. but i think i would rather travel by train which is faster and if i go to the grocery or supermarket i can go home riding a taxi cab. i can rest while someone is driving for me. it is nice to have a car of my own but i cant afford it. lol. maybe when the time comes my children can buy their own cars.

With the current price of oil use for cars... a lot of people would rather use public utility vehicles... rather than drive to their destination... i want to get my driver's license... because i will need it for my future career plan... and i am sure that when your kids are already professionals... they will buy you your own car with its own driver... and that would be neat... thanks for the response...

It took me a while..I was 21 when I finally got my license. I failed the first driving test but got it the second time. I got a nasty old man who likes to fail everyone. My driving teacher told me this. Luckily the second time around, i was more relaxed and the testing guy was nice and easy going. I was so excited when I got it!

That is a young and good age to get a drive's license... and you are not the only one to fail the first time... i only passed during my second try... i think passing the test depends a lot on the person evaluating the student... thanks for the response...

Hello aseretdd, I learned how to drive when I was 25 years old. It is quite late too since most start to learn when they reached the age of 18. I got a job offer with Auto Bavaria which sells BMW cars and amazingly, I didn't know how to drive when I accepted the job. Only my boss and I knew the truth *smiles* Still, I didn't learn how to drive but a month before resigning from the job, I went to a driving school and registered my name. I told the instructor that I need my license within a fortnight. I knew that I am going to be jobless after that so I just want to get everything done faster. I missed a lot of opportunities while working with the automotive company. There were so many BMW cars with different models and I couldn't even drive one! I always had someone or a company driver to send me for my monthly meeting at our HQ. I even accompanied my staff to drive back a red Z3 roadster when they promoted the film 'James Bond' here. (James Bond drove that Z3 in the movie...) I sat for a road test after a fortnight and I remember clearly what the driving instructor told me a day before the test. We had a trial road test and he told me honestly, "I think you can drive but if you panicked a bit, then gone your driving license!" He was right. I failed my parking test as I couldn't moved the car (I didn't pull down the handbrake!) and when I did move, I hit the pole. I got mine after the second test. I can drive a manual and auto car, but I prefer to drive a manual car unless during peak hours.

It must have been quite frustrating being surrounded by great cars... but cannot even drive one... well at least now you know how to drive... i also failed my first actual driver's test... i aced the written part... but when i drove with the evaluator... he told me that my problem is that i cannot maintain a certain speed... so he told me to practice more... which i did... and so i got my license in my second try... thanks for the response...

well i was 18 when i first learned to drive, i went throught driver ed class and after tht i had to complete like 34 hours of driving. i have to say tht learning how to drive requires no skill certinly in a automatic, i end up learing how to drive a manual car cuz it looked like more of a challenge. to this day i wont drive an automatic unless i have to. i perfer driving a manual cuz it gives me something more to do and tht it makes me more alert of whts going around me and wht i'm doing.

I also know how to drive a manual car... but i prefer automatic since i can concentrate more on the road than the gear of the car... maybe if all drivers in my country are more responsible and giving... i would drive a manual car more that automatic... thanks for the response...

Confidence is the key ingredient in driving... and i have to muster all of mine just to be able to do it... i hope i can be more confident now... since there are more vehicles... and the roads are narrower that where i learned how to first drive... thanks for the response...

I've got my license when I was 27, I do drive sometimes using my cousin's car. And when I went to US, from there I did learn a lot of things when it comes to driving. They have a different driving rules yet very interesting and driver's are well discipline. If it is RED, then they stop. Unlike here in my country, even the traffic light is RED, most of the driver's still passed along the traffic. It is a big achievement for me to have my own car way back 2004 and I still have my Mitsubishi Galant.

Wow... that is a great car... i thought of buying a car when i got back from working abroad... but decided not to... since i know it will be difficult for me to drive in my country because like you said... the rules are different... and drivers are a lot more aggressive... but now... i think i will try to drive more... thanks for the response...

You are lucky to have been able to learn how to drive at that early age... and to have parent who support you all the way... there are so many opportunities for those who have a driving skill... do not worry about being confident... that will surely come when it is needed... thanks for the response...

Hello aseretdd, I learned how to drive when I was 25 years old. A instructor of a driving company whom a friend of mine knows, teached me how to drive on his owner jeep for a reduce fee. After a week of driving around town with the instructor I was certified to drive. A lot of thing happened after that and up to now I am still learning how to drive. It is a continuous thing and driving is fun if there are no other vehicles around. I still have issue doing parallel parking especially in a crowded place. I am not a good driver and so I avoid driving as much as possible. But there are situations that you have to drive and so you make the best of the situation. I am glad there are more automatic cars in our country. It makes driving more easier and fun. Good thing you are enjoying how to drive. Keep it up.

I am also glad that my father bought an automatic car... the first one was manual... and i didn't want to drive it... i still have a lot of issue too... like parking backwards... and other cars overtaking... but we both need to practice really often if we want to master everything... thanks for the response...

This is one program that i admire in most US schools... you have Drivers Ed... and we don't have this in the Philippines... so most of my countrymen had to pay extra to learn... or had to ask friends or relatives... so i think you are very lucky... thanks for the response...

My dear father started the process when I was 17. He was a bit of a chauvenist and didn't really want me to have the independence of driving. But he made a pretense at it. He took me out driving once a month for a half hour. My brother who is a year older than me use to sneak and let me drive all the time so that I could learn. He even took me to take the test and get my license. My father was FURIOUS. Looking back it was very funny.

Well, that is indeed a very funny situation to remember... i guess your father was very protective of your since you are female... and driving can be quite dangerous... they can be like that... my father had no choice but to let me learn how to drive... because he knows how difficult it is to be ignorant in driving... thanks for the response...

Hi..I learnt to drive, when I was 19...I don't know how to drive a car..But, i can drive a bike...Most of them take some time to learn a bike but,I learnt it very soon...Most of them fail to switch into their 1st gear...But I rarely failed to do so..Learning a vehicle is always thrilling...one can become perfect in driving a vehicle if he learns it before 25...Even if we try to learn after that age..It takes lot of time to learn and to become perfect. We get scared of other vehicles,if they go at a higher speed..Even if your city has all the transport facilities, you have to learn how to drive a vehicle..You never know what happens in the future...If you have to go out on an urgent work you ll not be able to reach your destination, even if you have a bike or a car...So,be careful while driving and enjoy your driving..!!!!

Driving a bike or motorcycle requires different skills than driving a car... i remember when i was working abroad... bike drivers need to pass a different set of test and training... but i don't think i can ever drive that type of vehicle because i am too scared to even ride it... thanks for the response... welcome to mylot and i hope you enjoy your stay here...

I learnt driving in my 18th age. On that age my friends are driving so nicely but i don't know to drive so they made me shame by driving. So in my home one Hero Honds bike is there, i told to my brother and my brother trained me in a playing ground every evening after coming from the college. After two days i learnt how to drive. Really i am very happy when i learnt driving. I never fell down while learning and now i am 22 years old still i never felt down from the bike.

I learned how to drive in North Dakota after I was married and had a child. My husband taught me how to drive. Once I did learn I was glad that I did because than I didn't have to depend on him to take me places. I am 58 years and that was a long time ago.

This is also the main reason why i had to learn how to drive... i didn't want to depend on other people who had vehicles to take me to work... or to pick me up... that is a lot of hassle for them... and i also did not want to take the bus... becasue that is so time consuming... thanks for the response...

Hi aseretdd, That's great for you! I believed when you earned that skill already, it will always be with you! The only thing only for other people, the fear is there so it hinders them in driving back! Anyway, I am still learning this time..LOL! I am hoping I will be a goo driver at 32 years old.LOL! Wish me luck! LOL!

I learnt how to drive in 1989 firstly by my friend, and i started moving my parent's cars but when my dad noticed that i had been moving his car,he started giving me lessons and taking me out on driving tests. I went for a driving test in thesame year and contrary to what some people do to get their licience,i went straight to the testing ground without a teacher or a driving School been invoved, and wrote the exam, drove thesame day and ofcourse,i passed the exam. and was issed a licience thesame year.

i got driving license when i was 18 year of age. soon after school period. after that i drove my father's car for several months and i went to Russia for higher studies. now i came back home again for vacation, i am little bit nervous to drive now, because 2 years i didn't drive in Russia. But i think i can continue driving now without a problem.. when i was learning to drive, it took 30 days to learn step by step. i think no need to be afraid for drive even you didn't drive for few years. because you already have license. but you should be careful at the first few days when you drive after a long period.
