there are so many tips and websites and courses... sadly, you can't give anyone a useful answer to a question like this...but look at lots of pictures: see which you like, and try to see what they have in common. Visit galleries if you can, look at photo magazines and books...join betterphoto.com and join in the discussions. Look at my many bits on photography at http://davidarich.qassia.com/

Here is the first tip I got when I was in school: FRAMING Make sure that the outside edges of your picture are nice. Such as no fingers in the way, or no head getting cut off, or no corner of the table peeking it's ugly head in the frame! Also, check the backround of your subject, though when we look at things in person we can't tell that a light pole or lamp is directly behind someone's head, but when you take a picture of it, it makes it look like a pole or something crazy is attached to the poor subjects head. And as for natural photographs, suprise them with a lovely shot, and don't ask for them to smile or pose.
