What's the safest way to clean a camera lens

My Canon Camera lens has a few smudges in it and also some dirt on it and the edges. What's the safest way to get tehse smudges, fingerprints and dirt off the lens in a safe way?

Davidarich That compatibility depends on whether the camera has the focus motor in the body or not. Old Canon lenses are also compatible with current bodies and there are more of them. The greatest compatibility is found in the Pentax line. The image processing question...

Davidarich By the way, you may be better off cloning the date out. The Gimp can do that easily, so can Photoshop and PhotoPlus, which were mentioned by others, but Paint cannot, nor can Irfanview, and you already own The Gimp. Open the Clone tool From the image menu...
