Have you ever undergo an operation in your life?

For two consecutive years, I underwent two major operations in my life. I gave birth to my son last November 2005 and for some reasons, I needed to undergo a caesarian delivery. Came September 2006, I had another major operation coz of my goiter. And they say, you'll feel the effect of anaesthesia afterwards coz at some point inyour life after the operations, your memory will no longer as sharp as you had before. In my case, sometimes I tend to be forgetful nowadays which is the exact opposite of who I am before. I don't if this goes true for everybody. If it si, any medical explaination on that?

I've been under general anaesthetic 3 times so far but didnt notice any effect on my memory. I think most peoples memory function deteriorates with age but i've not heard of anaesthesia making it worse. I hope it doesn't as I'm expecting to need another op soon !

I actually don't know. Some of my friends just told me that, it has some effect in your memory. I really don't know. When I was single, I was never forgetful. I was even good in dates and events and memorizing as well. Uhm, maybe because I have my own family now that's why I tend to forget something. Unlike when you're single, your focus is just yourself.

I had a hernia repair when I was 4 years old and then tonsilectomy when I was 11. I had my first child in 1975 and then another in 1977 that was a C section. I had a tubal ligation the day after my third child was born in 1982 and then in 1983 I had a vein stripping on my leg. I have had an umbilical hernia repair and a partial hysterectomy also. I couldn't tell you if I have had any more as I foget. Maybe this is why I am so forgetful!

That's been quite a lot. As they say, anaesthesia has different reactions on our body. It all depends on how our body wil react to it.

I have never heard of anything like that as far as anaesthesia goes. However I do know that in the aging process the human memory does tend to get a little wonky and forgets things more often than it used to! But there's things you can do to "excersize" your brain to help it out! Like playing memory games on a nintendo DS, or doing crossword puzzles and word finds and things like that help the memory.

You have a point as well. Maybe, my status in life is also a factor why I am having this sort of forgetfulness.

Taking down notes to remind you of the things you need to do is an effective way of gettting things done in accordance with your plan.

I have never heard that. I had surgery in Oct and I don't think I've had any long term affects from the anaesthesia. I know that as people age, their memory is not as good as it once was.

I had major surgery when I was nine years old. I would say my memory is pretty good. It is probably better than average for most things. I dont think I had any lasting effects of anesthia and actually I never heard that before. i hope you are ok now. Maybe you are just becoming forgetful because you have alot on your mind.

You may be right. I am preoccupied with so many things. That could be a factor too.

If thats true, then it explains my forgetfulness, I'm very forgetful..to the point where its costing me money..lol. I've had two major surgeries in my life, I've had two open heart surgeries, I've never heard of anesthesia messing with your memory, but if so, I have an excuse now for being forgetful, anytime my husband says anything, thats what I'll tell him...lol. have a good day

I had a major operation almost 30 years ago when I was 7. I was small but I don't remember the anesthesia affecting me anyway. I had an out patient procedure done a couple of years ago and that had no affect on me either. Anesthesia can affect people differently...some people are even aware of what is going on during the surgery....Could you imagine?

maybe your friend did not explain it correctly. anesthesia does cause memory loss/block but, only for the surgical procedure itself. anesthesia provides a two-fold job. one is blocking pain. one is short-term memory loss so that if you would not remember "hearing" or "feeling" (not pain) at the time of surgery. many people in orthopedic surgery "feel" and "hear" the necessary banging of the no-bounce hammer to affix the hip. that memory is short lived. it may be a reaction to the synthroid you are now taking because of your thyroid removal. i would check with your family doctor.

I haven't went to an operation in my life. Oh! I'm wrong I do went an operation once its when im 8 years old, and its my Circumcision. But aside from that I almost had one. And if I take that operation, I would be not here in my lot anymore. Because that's a very serious operation the doctors said to me. The can't give me an assurance nor a little percentage if i would live longer when i take that operation. That operation is just an experimental, Because the doctors are not sure of their study on me. Because I Had an enlargement of the heart since birth (BLUE BABY) and ints not like an ordinary enlargement. It had many more than that. And i cant name them all. All i want to tell is, its all in my heart and they find 16 defects on it. And now im happy not have taken the operation. Now i live long than the doctors ro some other people said that i cant live longer i f i wont have that operation. Enjoy life. And My Lot too.

My memory startd going when I had a job some years ago with an overload of work and endless pressure everyday for about four or five years straight. I don't know about operations because I never had any serious ones. I imagine the stress is what causes memory loss and I'm not sure how to get it back, if you can. Healthy living, or a very healthy lifestyle can compensate for this, like with most things.

I've never heard that it can affect your memory on a long term basis. I'd think those effects would be short term, and likely to leave you after a couple of days recovery. As for having surgery, yes I've had 7 different surgeries so far in my life, and have had no ill effects from anesthesia.

Yes I had an operation like 4 years ago. I had an appendectomy that was nearly going to rupture. It was painful , and I felt that I was abused inside the hospital, the hospital operating staffs were not friendly and they are not accommodating. I was thinking that I could easily be abused inside the room because it's scary not to know what will happen when they will give you a general anesthesia. I just had no idea what they were doing even if the hospital is private and a good hospital.

regarding memory loss, I think it goes with age. The more old you are the more likely you easily forget things. But I don't know if anesthesia has a really major contribution to this. Maybe if you were given a large amount so I think it has some disadvantages.
