This was a challenge given to a family of 4. The Mother of two was unsuccesful barely. She went over budget by $5.03. I still say not bad.... Could you do it? http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/CollegeAndFamily/RaiseKids/CanAFamilyEatOn100AWeek.aspx

Yes it would be very difficult to do. I think my family could make it manage.... but there are only 3 of us. The price of food has gone up so much lately too!

That's not a bad amount to go over budget. I think she did very well. It's just my boyfriend and I as well as my two dogs in my family thus far, so we can eat on $30-$40 a week if we tried, but we usually do spend closer to $50 a week on groceries. I am able to save and cut corners while my boyfriend like to splurge on snacks and more expensive items. If I was by myself I think I could survive on $15 a week for food alone.

I'm sure we could do it, but our selection might be a bit limited. We're actually fairly close to that right now. We're a family of 3 and spend about $250 every 2 weeks on groceries, but that includes things like cat food, dog food, shampoo and conditioner, etc. That works out to $125 a week.

I know what you mean. I think I could come close. I'm super thrifty. I can eat really boring stuff too if I'm forced to. My big problem is eating out. I buy food a work every day

In my case, yes they could, but its only cuz we have only 3 of us. Our average grocery bill (which includes things like paper towels, soda, toilet paper, not just food.) is about 60-70 bucks, plus we eat out one day a week for either dinner or breakfast and that costs no more than 30 bucks..so yes we could do it, we do it all the time.

Yes I can. I spent about $125 a week for a family of 5 so that works out to $25 a week per person. If you do a good budget and keep it a list. I also use a pricebook which keep tracks of the lowest prices at different grocery stores.

Actually, I could probably do it, but after reading the article, I almost feel like I'd be cheating since my hubby likes to hunt and fish, so I don't have to buy all my meats at the grocery store. He pretty much keeps the freezer stocked for me, lol. I'm also good at shopping around for the best prices, using coupons, and checking out the clearance racks. I have a tendency of buying some bulk items we use alot so they can continue to be used for longer than one week, but with some careful planning I can strip our grocery store budget to $50 a week and still leave some money for hubby and the kids to have a few lunches out when necessary. They don't like left overs very much so I also try to prepare only what will be needed. Many times, any left over veggies are frozen for later use in a soup or stew near the end of the week. I'm glad I wouldn't have to include paper products or cleaning products as these can really add up too.

I think thats really cool that your husband hunts and gets his own food. A lot of people have lost touch with where food really comes from. It sounds like your very thrifty and also very smart about your grocery bill

For me i think its barely possible because of the way people use to budget, 6 days would be possible but not a full week.
