a new notion of keeping the doctor away by eating a banana a day versus an apple a day has been roaming around. since i'm from a tropical country, banana is more accessible and cheaper compared to apples. every after meal, banana would be considered as our dessert. it's good in our digestive system plus it helps us to deal with the increasing temp ranging from 30-40 celcius. but i'm working abroad now and it's the other way around here. bananas are more expensive and apple is cheaper. apple is rich in vit c so i hardly get sick.

Aside from the ones you've mentioned, bananas like here in the Philippines are much fresher than apples which were of course come from outside the country. I love apples but for aformentioned reason, especially the red california apples are so expensive here, we would resort to other fruit. I am glad that our country has variety of fruits to choose from, I think that makes us lucky enough. At home, banana is very much loved fruit by my niece and that we often have one in the house. Often though, I make fruit salad that include avocado, mangoes.. apples and bananas... yummmy !

here in our country the philippines banana is very cheap compared to apples (which is imported from either the us or china) so we hardly eat apple in a week. but we do eat a lot of banana especially if it is summer since banana is said to be good for the skin especially on summers. not only is banana good for one's health but it is also very nutritious.

summer's coming in the philippines and it is good to eat bananas again since it is rich in potassium. it keeps you from being dizzy while the temp heats up.

It would be great if you can have both a day. cause the benefits that you'll be getting from apple are different from the one that banana can give you. One of the people who responded here made a good research with comparison. So, to make our body healthy, eat banana and apple a day.
just in case, one is not available, at least try to have ANY of the two. Health is wealth!

i recommend banana and a glass of milk every morning if you want to shed some pounds. that'll be enough for breakfast. then by dinner an orand and an apple will do. i'm a vegetarian, what can i say.

hi fulghum!
here in our country, banana is the equivalent of apple. the saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" is translated into "a banana a day, keeps the doctor away". ^__~ bananas have many nutritional values. its good for the heart, the skin, the digestive system, etc. i usually have one piece of banana for dessert everyday. i would have like to have an apple a day but apple is more expensive than banana! that's why it is a surprise to learn that apples are cheaper there. apples must be readily available there locally. they probably don't import apples like we do. and they probably import bananas that's why it is more expensive there than apples.

well, thank you. but i cannot eat sloppy banana or a banana that is too ripe because it makes me vomit. i don't know why. instead i make them to banana muffins than eat them raw. plus it is more fun to eat them that way.

I think what's really best is to have a variety of the kinds of fruits and vegetables available wherever you are located. I read not long ago that the best fruits and veggies are those you can buy locally and in season.

In Japan, most if not all fruits are expensive. It was when I lived there. I am also originally from the tropics. We grew up with a multitude of fruits that were readily available. Pears and apples were expensive. Now, like you I am away from home and apples are a lot cheaper. I have cut back on red meat now so that I may eat other types of fruit. I think it is very important for anyones diet. It helped me stay healthy as a child and continues to today. So keep eating fruits!

I think both fruits have their own health benefits. I love both fruits but I eat more bananas because apples here are very expensive. When I'm sick I eat more bananas because they are easier to eat than apples.

For me the banana is the better of the two fruits, the banana is rich in potassium and when I have eaten my banana I will save the skin, then I cut the skin into small strips and then put it on to my garden, the potassiuom feeds the soil,so it has a dusl purpose,it is good to eat,and also good in a sandwich, then the skin is good compost to

Both fruits are very important to health and contain very different nutrients. For overall digestive function (which, of course effects the entire body)plus the nutrition the apple is best, but the banana contains nutrients that absolutely essential to function of all the cells. The potassium is especially necessary to balance electrolytes and to keep the brain functioning properly.
My best advice is to eat the fruits that are most readily available to you in their freshest form.

I think banana is a complete fruit containing all the essential vitamins and minerals. But the drawback of banana is that it has a lot of fat content in it. While apple, we all know should be included in the diet as it is also a nutritious fruit. But I think what you can do it eat banana and apple alternatively. This can educe your confusion also and keep you in budget also.

for me banana and apple are two good fruits which everyone should eat whenever there is a chance. As far as I am concerned there is not a lot of difference between the food values of both the fruits. Both are important at their respective places.
In India both are readily available, whereas banana is available throughout the year, apple is seasonal. Our ancestors used to tell something about banana which I want to share that if we eat banana in the morning its benefit are like gold, if we eat it in the afternoon its benefits are like silver and if we eat it in the night it is just like a cow dung.
Banana when not fully ripe is quite beneficial especially for young people, but for children they should be give ripen banana only.
Apple as somebody mentioned is full of fibre is also a good food and a great appetiser and moreover having Vitamin C it protects from some common diseases like cold etc.
So for me comparing banana and apple means comparing the benefits of cold weathere with hot weather.
As opinions may differ but even after differences people should eat both of these fruit whenever available and encourage others to have one.

I can easily buy apple in low price, but i don't like fruit and i soldem eat them. I like to eat a lot vegetale, i believe vegetable can offer me all the nutrition that fruit can. But my mother, sister and wife like fruit, i often buy apples and peel apples for them. They believe fruit is indispensable, but they can't convince me because i am healthy all the time.
