i feel that it's better to know as much words as possible..ENGLISH is one of the most wide-spoken language &we must be capable of knowing more than 5000k words...a better practice would be to look upon the dictionary every day and learn a single word from A-Z...make it as an everyday wont..it really helps!!!
Try out those words ,the next day for your usual conversations

Don't sweat it. You'll learn everything you need in no time. Other words are just for the dictionary and is rarely used. I think about 5,000 words are used in formal conversation, and 2,000 words in casual conversation.

Richard Lederer, a respected linguist, says that the average English speaker has a vocabulary of between 10,000 and 20,000 words. There are over 600,000 words in the English language.
Hope this helps!:)
