Can you remember the name of this 80's comedy show about a police detective?

This has been bugging me for a while. This police detective was real funny, the actor was blond and blue eyed. He had this big gun with a white handle sort of ivory and I think it got his name engraved on it.(don't know anything about guns, I hope you call it that way.) Another thing, he kept it under his pillow and I remember that he stands up to sing the US national anthem when tv finishes late at night. I used to watch it when I was little but can't remember the name of the show!
