A question about grammar.....

China

I am a Chinese student, I am not so familiar with the grammar in some details. For example. "If one is always engaged himself/itself in a ......" which is the correct answer? himself or itself? can you provide more examples to illustrate your opinion? Need your help.. Thank you!

It would really depend on what you are referring to. If you are talking about an animal for example, then you could use the following: "If one is always engaging itself in a game of catch, the cat would always be exhausted by the end of the game." In the sentence context which you are referring to, you are referring to an action. Coupled with the word always, you should be using the word -ing after the word engage. This is because you are describing an action. And it looks like it is on going. It is also possible to use himself in the sentence. For example: "If one is always engaging himself in combat, one is bound to get a lot of injuries and scars." If you want to use the word engaged, then the sentence should be re-worded as such: "If one is always engaged in combat himself, he is bound to get a lot of injuries and scars." Hope what I wrote is accurate. And helpful to you at the same time. 8p

Well, in grammar, when gender is unknown, it is most likely that he is to be used. Like in that question of yours, the correct one is himself, because what you meant with the word one is a person. You use it if it's an object or an animal. But if you're certain that it is directed to a person, use the male-specific pronoun if gender is unknown. I'm not good at grammatical terms, but I do know this rule. For example, "The wind moves by itself". A very lame example...heehee. And "One tends to hate himself when he does wrong things". I don't know when to use he/she. Someone shed a light on this.

The correct answer depends on the nature of the subject. In your example, himself is masculine and itself is neuter. Also in your example, "engaged" is past tense, whereas the sentence would seem to require the present tense - engaging. Given that you begin: "If one.." you would seem to be be referring to a person, so "himself" would be correct.

if the gender is unknown, you may use himself in the sentence. I would use oneself whenever one is used as the subject, but it seems to be a bit pretentious.

It would be: One always engage himself in a........ if its a neuter gender we can use itself. Otherwise when we are not sure of gender we write himself. Thanks.

I think you've got the correct explanation. So, here, what I want to add is the concept about GENDER. For English nouns, there all four kinds of genders: Masculine Gender (e.g.: man, father, son), Feminine Gender (e.g.: woman, wife, daughter), Neuter Gender (e.g.: book, desk, car), Common Gender (e.g.: student, customer, doctor). As ONE can indicates all these four genders, it depends. But usually, when referring to people, HIMSELF or ONESELF is correct. I'm also an English learner. What I said above is taken from Zhang Zhenbang's A NEW ENGLISH GRAMMAR COURSEBOOK.

the correct one is the himself because you are referring to a person and about the engaged part i think you have an incorrect sentence it should have been in the present tense instead of engaged it should be engaging.Itself is use for an object. So the correct sentence should be: IF ONE IS ALWAYS ENGAGING HIMSELF IN A .....
