The Playstation 3, well known for its blu-ray disc player as well as High Definition Games...but do you know that the PS3 can be a computer as well?! You can install a Linux OS on it. I really have no idea on how complicated is this, but I want to try as soon as I get a replacement for the 20gb HD that it has(old model PS3, the first ones). I'm thinking how good a PC can a PS3 be. Packed with the Cell processor, it could be fun! I remember reading an article about a scientist buying like 13 PS3s just to make a supercomputer so that he could use it for a physics simulation program. Wow. I would try installing Linux in it for sure. Will anyone be willing to try it out too? Thanks to those who will respond. Have a nice day...or night.

Yellowdog, never heard of it. I would try Ubuntu, that's the only Linux I know. Well, thanks for sharing the Yellowdog, I would do some extra research about it. Thanks for the response!

Well, it turns out that Yellowdog produced a copy of their Linux for PS3 use. You're good.

I know that PS3 can be a computer but I think it is no meaning to me.After all,I only use it to play video games and I already have a computer. And as we know, the CPU of PS3 is designed to run games so I think the compatibility of it is even bad than that of XBOX360 because you know the CPU of XBOX is also be used in computer. It is only my personal view, you needn't to mind it.

It's ok. But no, the Cell is not designed for games alone. It is now used at some of IBM's servers that they sell. And I also know that the CPU of the X360 is a triple-core, and is compatible with those of the computer(Windows-based) because it uses the XNA framework, a part of the .Net framework aimed at creating games. A very good thought of you sharing it though, I'm grateful. Thanks for the response and have a good day/night!

Oh, I stand corrected. Yes the Cell CPU is mainly designed for gameplay, well for the PS3. But putting an option for an OS installation means that it is not for gameplay alone. And so i think that the Cell CPU is also compatible also to open source stuffs, like firefox. Imagine running firefox on a Cell. 6 SPUs...clever. I hope it's compatible though.

Yes I always keep that in mind. And I was wondering if there was a special edition of Linux that is fully compatible with the Cell architecture. I hope it works. Anyways I'll read some forum posts as soon as I get my hands on a new hard drive..I just hope I don't bust it out. Anyways thanks for your reply.
