I have an 8 year old son and a 5 year old daughter and they both really enjoy Mario Galaxy and the wii sports. My daughter loves that she can beat daddy at bowling!

Depends completely on the child, take them into the shop and let them decide. But if you can't (birthday or what have you) then:
Wii Fit is great fun for all the family (which lowers if "birthday present"-ness as it will not be a present for one child but the houses).
For teenagers then Bully or Geometry Wars, some parents might be worried about Bully but if you let your kids watch Grange Hill then I really don't think you have anything to worry about.
Games for younger children then likely the film tie-in of month, sure the game will not be much but I don't think the little ones will care much.

I would say boom blox as it is fun and also teaches coordination and precision. Or wii fit would be good too I suppose

I was going to ask the same question!! well my daughter (she's 4) loves wii sports because she does pretty good at boxing and golf... but not to well at the others... she also likes many of the minigames in mario party 8 (i think that's what it's called) ... we bought this hannah montanna game (my sister and cousin come over often and they both wanted to play it, so we bought it for the 3 of them) only to find out that it's too complicated for my 4 year old... we're still looking for other games that she could play...
