I have both dvd's and vhs tapes. I am trying to buy alot of the movies we have on dvd as vhs tapes wear out after using them to many times. I also use netflix and I love it. I get dvds once in awhile that wont work though but they are good about sending a replacement right away.

I still use my vcr at times but have gotten rid of most of my vhs tapes. Schools still use vhs because not everyone can afford the dvd player or if they have it it takes a while to acquire the dvds! Well I suggest that you don't get any dvds yet. If everything will be switching to Blu-ray soon you might as well wait for that.

If your VCR still works, why get rid of VHS tapes? I wouldn't go out and buy new copies on DVD of all the movies I already have on VHS. Eventually they will get worn out and I will need to go with DVD or go without. Though most movies I buy now I buy on DVD, unless I find a really good deal. I figure they will last longer, and seeing how my VCR just broke, it seems I've made the right choice.

My dad also has VHS collections and a he play it often times! I noticed that his collections consist of classical Hollywood films that is difficult to look for nowadays. But there is new technology wherein you can transfer a VHS into VCD/DVD. I suggested it to my dad and he still thinking about it. I think DVD files are more safe and secure than VHS since VHS is quite far behind in terms of storing films.
