them? It seems the smart way to always have them is to keep copies at all times. In an emergency , or visiting a new dr....It is always harder to collect them if you have lived in many different places. It can take awhile to get them , how do you feel about all this?

I really had problems trying to recover all of mine. I had to learn that if you dont keep up with them along the way, its harder. Your right, we should. I will always keep track of mine now since having gone through so much trouble finding them all.

I did this a few years ago, I asked for a copy of all my medical records and it was a whole bundle which I had to pay for because of photocopying expenses etc and the records went right back to my birth, it wasn't pleasant reading either, I found it very depressing and in the end decided to burn them, I didn't want bad memories around me and it's easier to forget the past and what has happened and I don't want to be constantly reminded of what I have been through. I have lived in different places and have had different doctors but I am happy enough with the situation without having medical records as back up, but that's my own personal preference.

I think many of us would not want to see them all the time. It can be hard to get them all if you have moved alot and have to track them down.It seems here its more like you have to go to each place and contact them and get them on your own.ugh not fun...but sometimes its important if you are alergic and dont remember to what and things like that.

One should always try to retain medical records if possible. You are correct when you say that collecting them can be difficult when asked about your history or when you have visited several Drs. in different places. I think the same is true when you have had different health plans, or when you have an extensive medical history. Some facilities take a long time to retrieve medical records and will always bill you first. I had surgery where a mistake was made. As a result, I had an extensive hospital stay, and a long list of prescriptions in and out of the hospital. I had to recite my history so many times that sometime I missed things, or put them in the wrong context. It's best to have the records to avoid problems, not to mention the possibility of alteration.
