I'm looking for a different place to vacation, and one of my online friends has recommended Almatay, Kazakhstan. Since I am new to international travel and am looking for places that are different, affordable, and safe, my head is spinning from the list of places that have been recommended. The majority of the recommendations are in name only without any facts. I don't want to read the travel brochures because I'm not interested in hype. If anyone has any first-hand experiences vacationing in Almatay, Hungary, China, Dubai, or Russia, I would sincerely appreciate getting more information before making my decision. Thank you.

Since your profile says you are six years old I presume you will not be travelling alone. You also say you are new to International Travel so the countries you mentioned are best visited as a member of the a group with a tour guide that stays there the whole time and speaks English. If by any chance you are allowed to travel alone bear in mind the single supplement is a big additional expense and maybe it would be a good idea to choose a trip closer to home. I am a solo traveller myself and I found Costa Rica and some of the Caribbean Island quite safe and enjoyable. It also depends if you go to a gated resort. I also visited Malta last year travelling by myself and found the tourist services just super. Another friend of mine, also a solo traveller is presently taking a cruise through the Panama Canal. I have been to the Ukraine, again, it was an escorted group trip that started out in Germany. The guide spoke the language and booked us into the hotel arranged for local tours and when anyone was not feeling well arranged for medical help. My cousin and his wife have been to Dubai, not recommended for solo travellers. My friend Evelyn's husband has been to Khasakstan. It was more of a basic roughing it trip with very minimal conveniences and very very basic food. I would not recommend it for first time travellers. I wish you good luck and I hope you find something that suits you.

Thank you for Best Response and many good wishes to you. I know it can be a little bit scary to travel alone but it is also very rewarding.

Hi, Thank you for your comment. I will be traveling alone, but as a member of a tour group. The age is a private joke. Actually, I have a birthday coming up in three months which will make us the same age. I have traveled across the US, but this will be my first experience with international travel. It's both exciting and a little scary at the same time. I appreciate the advice and will scratch Khazakstan and Dubai off my list.

It all comes down to personal tastes really! Are you a beach person? Do you consider yourself to be a spiritual person? Do you prefer colder or warmer climates? What is your budget? How many days do you plan to go for? So many questions!
Personally I LOVE South East Asia as I find it so diverse and multicultural. You can travel very short distances to see multiple places in the one trip with every country having its own unique style and feel. Exchange rates for the US dollar in Asia is generally good as well so you can get good "bang for your buck" also.
If you are someone that is somewhat spiritual then India or China is recommended; or even between the two in places such as Nepal where you can experience the mountains etc. China with the Great Wall and temples will stay in your mind forever. Then of course there is Europe which means that once you have the necessary visa you can travel freely throughout the EU via trains and planes quite cheaply really.
It all comes down to what inspires you! As for the specific countries you have asked about; Dubai is HOT but remarkably advanced (They even have a fake ski field!); Russia from what I have heard is great but also expensive; and I have heard Hungary is a beautiful country with a lot of history. Almatay I do not know anything about unfortunately! Good luck making your decision!

By the way i have just noticed your reference to Hong Kong and Singapore above. From my experience, Singapore is great for shopping and food but the weather can be very hot and humid and to be honest the City is wonderfully clean and impressively well organized but I feel it lacks character compared to Hong Kong. Hong Kong too has great shopping; more enjoyable weather and embraces both modern living AND its Chinese heritage. If I were to choose between one or the other I would spend time in Hong Kong; hands down! They have the Disney Park there now too.

Well I've been living in the Philippines all my life so I suppose all I can recommend you is somewhere here. LOL I've been to some beautiful places like Villa Escudero and La Virginia Resort but the truth is as long as I'm with family or friends even the mall sounds like a great place. Why don't you try coming here in Manila? I've seen lots of Americans coming here through out my life. I can even recommend some great places to visit and eat at. LOL sorry I know I'm not much of help to you, sorry.

Hi! Hope you can add the Philippines on your list. Most of the people here can understand and speak english .We have lots of beautiful beaches and sceneries you can visit. My cousin who lives in California comes home every two years and he brings a long some of his friends here. Compared to other countries you don't get to spend as much here. Anyways, good luck in choosing. I would love to travel too in the near future .

First of all, I think you need to work on what do you like personally. Are you looking to shop, dine, party or just looking for a quiet holiday? It has also to do with just how adventurous you can be.
Having said that, I do believe that if you do not want to be bothered with extensive shopping and what not(s) then, I think Phuket or Koh Samui in Thailand will be a relatively good and value for money. The beaches there are just superb, with good hospitable staff that speaks average fluent English and you can be assured of the quality in their rooms and sightseeing tours. The food there is quite an experience too, and there is never a lack for the western food as well just in case you might prefer your diet to be closer to home. I can assure you that the seafood there is just excellent and fresh.
Now, if you prefer shopping then you should be looking at Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Singapore. Language and offers will never be a barrier as long as you have that purse that will never stop the cash flow. Everything will be a bargain from clothings, accessories, cameras and all the computers and computer peripherals. It will be endless and just beware that the saying shop till you drop is going to be true here. In these places, you can simply DIY and with much ease too.
So, much will be dependent on what you actually would like and like to do before you decide on the place. Hope this will be of help and may you have a good and pleasant deserved holiday.

I would recommend Costa Rica. It's not too far from the US, it's safe, and reasonably priced. The country is small but very diverse, which means that if you want a change of pace, you can take a short trip to another part of the country for a different surrounding and experience.
One of my favourite places to see there was Monte Verde...the cloud forest. Beautiful place.

My first choice would definitely be Moscow. It's quite cosmopolitan and the people are super friendly and helpful. They don't care if your command of the language stinks; they're just thrilled you tried. Besides, about 30% of Russians also speak English.
Next to that, Istanbul is absolutely fabulous. It's right on the water and is a favorite vacation spot for Eastern Europeans.

Hey stickergal, fly over to my country Uganda-it is beautiful country with wonderful scenaries to enrich your vacation-there are wonderful people too-you would go to western Uganda and see the mountain gorillas, you could go to Kidepo in Eastern Uganda and watch Girraffes and wild ostriches and Rhinos-You could simply move to Murchison National Park and have a ride of your life with beautiful sites of nature-animals of all kinds, most of you which you will never see anywhere else in the wild-now tell me you are on your way ok? LOL!

I think that you could narrow down a list of interesting locations, then go to your local library and borrow travel guide books about these. You don't have to travel as part of a tour because this would insulate you from meeting the local people very often and is less exciting that traveling on your own independently.
Here are some suggestions:
Moscow to Beijing on the Trans Siberian Railway stopping off in at Lake Baikal in Russia and Ulan Bator in Mongolia. Then take some trains in China.
Almatay would be interesting and all the countries in that region don't get many tourists.
Overland through Central America. Nicaragua could be quite an adventure, so can Costa Rica and Panama. The Darien Gap is dangerous though so I don't suggest you go there.
I went to Hungary in 1990 and it was a wonderful experience but all of Eastern Europe has become more developed and busy with tourists these days. I went to Latvia this year and some Australians were amazed by it. I found Romania that I went to in 2006 the most backward place in the rural regions only. My favorite country is Samoa and I went there in 2002.
Good luck deciding where to go. Happy and safe travels.

For the 5 places you listed, I've only been to China. It's a great country and there are so many interesting places to visit. What you see on the north=west=south=east of the country are totally different, so for me, it's definitely well worth your time and money. And since you plan to join a group tour, you will generally not have any problems. Most of their guides can speak english very well, albeit with accent, but comprehensible.
Where to go in China? Whew, that's the hard part. There are so many things to see. Beijing definitely for the Great Wall, you MUST go there if you go to China. And of course, the Forbidden City. I personally don't enjoy this type of thing so for me Forbidden City was just ok, nothing special, but it is for most people, so you can go there. Shanghai is so modern, I'm not sure if you'll be interested in it. Nice architecture but modern. Harbin is the border to Russia, and it looks so much like Russia than China. Xian for the terracotta warriors. Guilin for the mountains, I've only seen pictures and wished I included it in my trip. Jiuzaigou in Sichuan province is wonderful for the amazing lake, waterfalls and the like. Then of course there's Tibet, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia.. I don't think a single group tour will cover all these places, but I may be wrong.. Hope I helped a little..
