I want to learn to swim. My dad told me to go to the Y, and that he would actually pay for it if I had to join the YMCA to get the swimming lessons. It's consistently over 100 degrees here, ever day, with the humidity plain old atrocious. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences at the Y? Did you take swimming classes? I'm thinking this may also be the only way I can exercise this summer without keeling over from the heat.

When I was a kid I took swimming classes at the public pools, the Y and the university. I almost wasn't allowed in the university classes because I was an inch too short, until I proved I could already swim.
Haven't had classes since I was an adult, tho I understand my mom took some.

My kids did....and I am glad they took the opportunity to learn how to swim. My mom made sure that all of us learned as she was scared of water.....and we all love it! I love boating...swimming....and used to water ski before I got bad knees! But I think if you have the opportunity you should go for it!

Pam, I learned to swim at the YMCA when I was in college. Took it for college credit. I never have regretted it. Other forms of water exercise are water walking and water aerobics. They provide cardio and resistance at the same time. I wish I had a Y membership right now. Hope you like it.

When I was younger, I knew of women who drove about fifteen miles to come. One lady started using a walker, and after a year or so of regular water exercise, was able to get rid of it. I wish you all the best. Her doctor actually "prescribed" the water classes for her arthritis. Thanks for the BR

I took water aerobics at the Y. It was fun. That's a bit different than swimming classes, but still quite pleasant.

Your local Y may offer such classes! Give them a call.

When I was a kid, my brothers and I went to they Y all the time. We learned to swim of course, but there were so many other things to do there too. I used to love going on the bus from home to the city and spending the day at the Y. We played ping pong and pool, and they even had a small library where I could hide from my brothers and get some quiet time! lol But the swimming was the best. The classes were well run and the instructors top notch. I got my LifeGuard's certificate at the Y. Fond memories for sure!
Oh - and our Y was divided into Men's and Women's, but except for the pool time, all the other activities were co-ed.

Yep. And a pool room with ping pong tables too, a caferteria, a solarium, a chapel, - it had everything and I loved going there.

I never learned to swim either. I wish I had. It seems like it would be fun. I don't think they are offering classes at the Y now for swimming but it seems like they did at the beginning of summer. I have a friend that takes water aerobics at the Y and she loves it.

Wow--it's been sooooo long for me...but when I was a little kid my mother took me to the YMCA in Manhattan and that's where I learned to swim...and it was great too as the instructor had been a former Olympic champion swimmer...couldn't get any better than that, huh? LOL

Swimming is such wonderful exercise!
A great low impact way to stay in shape.
I was just reading a blog article earlier
that said it may take up to an hour of
exercise daily, five days a week to actually
lose weight.
Swimming for an hour is not all that
hard.
A good overall low impact workout.
Wish I'd tried out swimming when I was
pregnant.
Some days I could barely move.
P.S. I haven't tried the YMCA yet.

When we were kids and going to school, we had a program that we got to go to the YMCA to learn how to swim, during class hours. We went from grade 1 to grade 6 as part of our schooling. It was great since we got to be really good swimmers. It was also free and since most families back then had very little money and lots of kids, I come from a family of 8 kids, our parents would not have been able to afford for us to go. I have to wonder why the school system doesn't do it anymore. It would sure cut back on drownings if more kids knew how to swim.
I think you will enjoy it and I think you should definitly go. It is nice to know how to swim. I am totally comfortable in the water and on boats since I am a strong swimmmer.

i think u shouldn't join the swimming classes if its 100degree because u may fall sick ........and its better u go to some cool place or may be places where temperature is bit low...... the human body cannot take cold and hot climate both together so better dont join
