Is it true that people with the same surname are all related or related somehow? Coz someone in facebook added me recently with the same surname & she's a filipina too.. i browse her page & i saw lots of people sharing with the same surname, not only that, most of them are all spanish people & they are living from different parts of the world with different ethnicity. this is cool! so i also add them on my list & call them 'cousin' even we are not or maybe related somehow lol..

as far as i know not all those who have the same surnames are relatives..for example my boyfriend and i..my boyfriends surname is reyes and reyes is our relatives then when i knew that i freaked out a bit then i discovered that our real realtives are the sapin and during the spanish era they had changed they're surnames from sapin to reyes in order to hide to the Spaniards..while my boyfriends family originated from davao and really has no connection to the Reyes realtives of ours..then i too knew a lady which has the same surname with mine..our clan is from Laguna and her's is from Davao i had asked her of her dad's name and just in case they are our relatives but when i asked my dad about it he do not know her dad..

If your a Bible fan, which case I am, we came from single parent which means we could be cousins with a very long lineage, lol. Now we are looking for a much closer generation relationship, a century perhaps, hehe. Since we (Filipinos) are clannish type jinxky we tend wonder if this person is a relative or something, but who knows right? Lol.
You make me remember a classmate before she's fond of asking people their family and roots until she makes it a point that they are cousins. ROFL. No worries I actually did the same to someone, hehe.

some of them knows exactly what ethnicity they are, they will say that they are 1/4 chinese, 1/4 spanish, 1/4 french, 1/4 filipino hahaha.. i never know if i'm 3/4 blah blah or 1/4 blah blah all i know is im 100% pinoy lol i cannot ask my grandpa about it coz he passed away two years ago, maybe he knows the exact ethnicity we are.. but my mom told me that maybe we have mixed spanish blood, as you can see all of the people who have the same surname as mine lives in mexico & other spanish countries.. when i was in college i had a classmate with the same surname, she told me where she lives, relatives, blah blah & i told it to my parents & i found out that she's my niece lol we can say that this is really a 'small world' hehehe..

There is always a big probability that your cousins with someone who happens to be same surname, that is if you have to trace the roots, especially if you are both Pinoys.

yeah that's why it's hard to have a relationship with pinoys coz we'll never know that somehow we're all related lol like for example we're cousin but we have different surname, that's hard to distinguish. we can say that we're cousins if we share the same surname, but what if not? it's really hard.. especially we don't have family reunion lol

In some cases this could be true, but in others, where the name was derived from an Ancestor's profession,(English) eg,Smith,Farmer,Cutler,Shipwright,Carver,Archer,You could be looking a long time to find any common ancestry! There was a Show on TV a while ago about tracing people's ancestry using Genetics..they were able to narrow down family lines across Europe, and many were surprised at the many Ethnic strands in their DNA.. My own Name is derived from the Gaelic Language for "Dark Stranger"..there could be a lot of us in the World!

I think that we are related somehow in some ways. But in some degrees, we can't really call everybody with whom we have same surname as are our relative. Especially if the surname is very familiar and used. In my case, I have a spanish and not very common surname in the Philippines, so most of the time, if I hear someone with the same surname, I associate him/her as my relative. Just in my case.

We are all related to some extent, because we are all descendants of Adam and Eve, as told in the Bible.

If we do not consider the bible (no sense arguing about it, it's THE bible, cant question that), not everyone with the same surnames are related. If yout look back a few decades, you'll find that surnames were only added pretty recently and because of census purposes. Some people's surname were taken from their father's names (john's son, hence johnson) place of origin (of donnel, hence O'Donnel or in bisaya duhaylungsod), or just about anything that could symbolize their family. And still others just thought of their "surnames" at the spur of the moment. So no, not everyone is related.

We cannot take it as like that i have got few cyber space freinds some have same surname but when i asked them about that they said they might be related somewhere and somehow but when they got introduced to each other by me ( as i'm very intrested ) they came to a conclusion that they are not relatives at all.. but since they have the same surname they still speak as they are relatives

my surname is roxas. and i wish i am related to Manuel Roxas. that would be nice if i am related to him. i dont think that people with the same surnames are related specially when the surnames are very familiar.... like dela cruz, de leon, cruz, reyes. i think those are some of the very popular surnames there is here at the philippines. my sister has a classmate who the surname is roxas but his parents are from romblon. our roxas' are from bulacan so i dont think that we are related to him.

hi jinxky!
i have also come across some people with the same last name as my father. my father's last name is not common. i actually think that there are only a few families that bear the name. so i am inclined to think that perhaps, the few people that i have came across with bearing the same last name are probably my relatives, if not close then distant. ^__~ i don't really know my father's family background because he and mother got separated when i was only three years old. when i was in college i tried to meet some of his close relatives but i failed. it was my chance because i was in the province where his family lived. but i failed. oh well.
you and your new friend should investigate it further. you might get surprised if you discover that you really are relatives.

Maybe, somehow related in a way, but not in blood ties, my dear ^_^ hehe =D As in the past, for chinese, they have a clan for which individual surnames, and the more the surnames of a certain clan, the more respect they gain because they are much bigger.. lol =D
But how they manage to get together and came out with surnames in the 1st place, that's what i dunno about.. hehe =D As for europeans and ple from other countries, i'm not too sure about their history and culture.. hehe =D
muahhhh muahhh muahhhh ^_^ Miss u lots, my dear ^_^

There are instances when they are related. Obviously because they are carrying the same surname. But there are also times that they are not. Just a happy coincidence. Honestly, I haven't met someone who have the same surname as mine. Only those close relatives.

jinxky hi nope I dont think so as my maiden name was
Clark and i have met a lot of Clarks who are not
related to me, even the ER doctor's last name

not all of them.

I have often wondered that myself and I think that it could very well be possible. Although I am sure it would be a relation much like a great aunt's daughter's son's cousin. Something along that line. My fiance calls one of his friends "brother" and when I first met him I found that he is related to my aunt in a way and therefore he is one of my inlaws. I call him cousin and he does the same for me. When I get married to my fiance he will be my brother in law as well as my cousin. I know it is a bit confusing but I feel comfortable calling him cousin just like you with all the other people on your facebook profile. Have you thought of trying to find out their lienage?
Have a wonderful and lovely morning to you! Happy mylotting!

Well, for me, since my last name is not common, those who have the same surnames as mine are truly related to me...But one time, also in facebook, someone added me because we have the same surname and one lives and was raised in the US and the other one was in Portugal..My last name is Spanish and not really Filipino sounding..But I believe my forefathers are all born Filipinos or so they say..
The three of us researched our ancestry and found out that our ancestors all came from Spain. My ancestor and the one in the US are both born Filipino but the roots came from Spain, when the Spaniards occupied or settled in our country.
it's good to know that i have other relatives who lives not only in Canada and US..At least they can spread around the genes and surnames...

It is possible, but it might be that the relationship is very distant. There are a number of sites where you can do genealogy research to search and document your ancestry.
http://www.familysearch.org has a free program that you can download to document your family history. The site also allows you to search the LDS records for your ancestors.
http://www.ancestry.com also has a lot of resources.

This post just caught my eye,as in this mornings newspaper the surname Pursglove is mentioned, and I have a friend who shares that unusaual surname,we chatted about its origins once, and it appeared to have come from, the maker of purses and gloves, which seem so obvious ,but lol it may have been something completely different!Yes names are a very interesting thing.

It is really exciting to think that we are discovering family links and knowing long lost relative or something like that. Other culture would be inclined towards strong family ties - we value these types of relationship.
Same last names may or may not be relatives. Especially now that we are able to change names and last names legally. Also, we went through a time where documentation seems void and null. it is just now that we are able to document things. My name, for example, should have been longer... but because it was not documented, it changed.
Same thing with last names, I guess.
Good day!

If you have the same surname with another person, then there is a slim possibility that you are related to each other. The chances of this being true if you find out that you both originated in the same city, province or locale. But one can never be a hundred percent sure. I am also a Filipino by blood and there is a story that I heard that before we were colonized by Spain, most of our ancestor did not have surnames. Our ancestors only used first names such as Juan, Pedro, Andres, etc. For the Spain to collect tax from them, they have to make an alphabetical list and it was hard for them to do it. So they made a decree that all must have surnames and our ancestors have to select one which they prefer from an approved list. In doing so some of the distant relative back then may have opted for a different surname. You may read related article by googling "Philippine Surnames FAQ".

hi jinxky..........having the same doesn't make you related. in a way we are all related because we are brothers and sisters of the earth. but it's great that you get along so well and that makes it fun. you enjoy your friends of planet earth.
